Recently signed to Candlelight Records for the release of the sophomore album “Quietly, Undramatically," Philadelphia black metallers Woe have not-so-quietly invaded the U.S. black metal scene. Front man Chris Grigg recently corresponded with Metalunderground to explain how Woe went from a solo project to a full band and getting a record deal with the legendary Candlelight.
Chris also tackled the issue of adding in clean vocals on the new album, stating "For a musician, selling out is defined by doing something that you would not normally do in the interest of selling records. To not follow my gut, to omit a musical idea that really worked just because I was scared of how people would react... That would be a sell-out move." Throughout the interview below he discusses leaving behind the band's direct European black metal feel, playing live shows, and even discusses his trip to Ken Ham's creationism museum. More...

Gwar vocalist Oderus Urungus commented on the song's theme by saying:
"It's about the connection between the "Old Ones" [of H.P. Lovecraft lore] and the Nazis, how Cthulu-spawn helped [Josef] Mengele and others to escape in U-boats to South America, where they continued their experiments. How the research hit a flat spell until the Old Ones intervened again, this time supplying the research team with the assistance of the "KZ Necromancer," who came from the sea, crabs clinging to his uniform."

"The album is a pretty big production, and still has a very earthy, organic feel to it," says Staps. "We've spent a great deal of time on the basic sound this time around -- the drums, bass, guitars and vocals -- and at this stage I am pretty confident that this will pay off in the end!"
British madcap thrashers Lawnmower Deth have been confirmed to play at this year's Damnation Festival in the U.K. Lawnmower Deth reunited in 2008 and have since performed at the notorious Download festival in both 2009 and 2010. Vocalist Pete Lee commented: "Who said irony was wasted on us? How often can you fit 'Lawnmower Deth', 'enigmatic', 'the most tuneful band of the day' and 'complete lack of panda make-up' into one sentence? How chuffed are we to be entering the Dalmation Festival. We shall of course be looking forward to taking 'Best in Show' at this illustrious canine fest. We're particularly excited about going head-to-head with Paradise Lost in the agility sections."

Kelly Shaefer of Atheist recently talked with Decibel Magazine about his five least favorite Atheist songs. His break down of the songs can be read below.
4. “Fractal Point” / 5. “Displacement” (tie) — Elements (1993) Ugh, well yes there are two in one here because they are in fact interludes on the album Elements, and I had the idea of everyone just doing a special little piece of music on their own to connect all of the songs together. Now Rand Burkey is one of the most brilliant guitar players I have ever met, and his work on three albums was stellar, but these guitar doodlings are depressing, lifeless, and boring. He was always a fan of guitar swells, and he did a masterful job of creating the swells at the intro to “Piece of Time”, but these were just not fun to listen to. Choy did “Samba Briza”, which I loved, and Frank Emmi did “See You Again”, a great little ‘clean’ guitar section, that was a nice calm before the storm before the last tune on the album. If I heard these two interludes, I would either take the disc out, or quickly fast forward to the next tune. Rand, I love you bro, but these are my least favorite things you wrote with us! There it is. A little self-deprecation for all of you.
3. “Earth” — Elements (1993) “Earth” is not a horrible song, but it’s one of my least favorites for a number of reasons. First being the 808 bass drop in the middle, and the guitar part is somehow not interesting enough. There were so many other ways we could have gone, but as you know we had 40 days to write and record that whole album, and that is the only song that I feel suffered from lack of time to evolve. Another thing I don’t like is the guitar part underneath [the lyric] ‘That little planet of the hill’. All of these things are my fault. [Laughs] Lyrically, I don’t mind it, but it’s at the bottom of my list of favorites.More...

Leprous has checked in with the following road report from London:
"Day 4/34 - Sheperds Bush Empire, London, England - 31.10.10: We're now starting to get comfortable on the road. Sleeping in a moving bus is like a breeze, and there is a well established odour inside. Apart from a midnight border control the 625km drive from Groningen to London is unnoticeable. We wake up in a coach parking lot, and slowly try to make our way through the not-so-busy streets of London, looking for tonight's venue; the Sheperds Bush Empire. The long drives have started to affect our clocks, and when we finally find the place, the new timezone makes sure we're an hour too early. Fortunately killing spare time is also something you become good at on tour, and this time the nearest mall gets a visit from Leprous. Yes, men can shop (but it's absolutely exhausting).
"The old theater can fit 2000 people and the large stage makes for an easy rig. Our backstage is located on the fourth floor (or third, if your british) and as the evening progresses, we get to know the elevator. My index finger also get an unwilling encounter with one of the heavy western-like slam doors. My day has begun. Our usual backstage rig of four Macs, a PC and a juice machine is up and running. We hit a brick wall: no Wi-Fi. Our world crumbles.. What now?? Our 21st century abstinences kicks in. I elegantly replace it with my guitar while all the others stare into infinity, waiting for divine intervention (top right photo). Several hours pass, but no gods seem to be present (except in the tour production office). With my smashed finger in mind, my wonderful day reminds me; I forgot my stage outfit in the bus (parked back the lot). For the first time the daily jogging routine of the others comes in handy. I get to keep on playing. More...

The band is fronted by Patrick Kennison - formerly of The Union Underground - and supported by members Jesse Billson on guitar, John Younger on bass, and Chad Clark on drums.
“Our sound encompasses the best parts of our influences,” explains Kennison. “We love the vocal harmonies of classic bands like Alice in Chains, or the angst of legends like Trent Reznor, but our riffs and song ideas tend to be spawn from guitar driven bands like Metallica, or even Rage Against the Machine. Once we put the vocals on, we immediately feel that our music takes on it's own sound.”
