Pit Stories: Epic NOLA Nights

Pit Story day has rolled around, as we check in with bands and fans from across the world to get their favorite stories from live shows.

From lost nude roadies to stumbling across the scene of a stabbing, there's a million and one crazy Pit Stories and we're on an endless quest to discover them all!

Today we've got Ross Brown of Louisiana-based stoner metal band Vermillion Whiskey sharing two epic nights burned into his memory that he'll never forget.

Ross tells the tale like this:

The most energetic and slightly horrifying pits was at a HAWGJAW show on a sweaty south Louisiana night. The crowd was totally into the bands raw and intense style. The singer had a huge back piece tattoo of a huge monkey on his back. He was rolling around on the ground in the middle of the pit and whipping himself in the head with his mic. I was probably 18 at the time and was etched in my memory.

Then there was a wild road trip to see my friends band Pig Knuckle play with New Orleans band Mangina. It was at a 24 hour laundromat/Bar Checkpoint Charlies who serves scrambled eggs 24/7. They had a 10 year kid doing backup vocals, bass player was wearing a thong, and singer had a cape. Then in the midst of downright debauchery, the singer drop kicked a heckler in the crowd right upside his head and the bass player and singer got into a fight. That night was EPIC like most of my trips to NOLA.

Vermillion Whiskey's new album "Spirit of Tradition" is coming on February 10th, 2017. Get full info at this location. More...

OvO Streams "Freakout"

"Freakout," the latest track off upcoming new OvO album, "Creatura," has now come online and can be heard below.

A "dirgy ocean of pulsating noise," this new track is a prime slice of the veteran Italian duo's raw and dramatic sound – a unique mix of primitive industrial, horror-movie ambience, and noise-rock punishment, led by the theatrically demonic vocals of Stefania Pedretti.

Out next Friday, December 9th, on Dio Drone Records, "Creatura" is OvO's ninth full-length album. It was recorded by Lorenzo Stecconi (Zu, Ufomammut) at a theater company's warehouse in Ravenna, Italy, mixed by Giulio Favero, and mastered by Giovanni Versari (Muse). More...

Cliterati Releasing New EP

Portland's hardcore punk brutalizers from Cliterati - featuring within its riotous ranks Poison Idea, Voetsek, and Murderess alumni - will release a self-titled EP via Tankcrimes later this month.

Recorded and mixed by Andrew Grosse and mastered by Jose DeLara at Caravan Studios on the band's home turf in Oregon, the five-track punisher will be made available on cassette this coming December 9th, 2017.

"Cliterati is a band who believe in equality through inclusion. We are queer, straight, people of color, and white," relays screamer Ami Lawless. "Our influences include the bands Doom, L7, and Bolt Thrower with a healthy dose of Pacific Northwest D-punk. This band was brought together by Amelia Collins and we continue in loving memory of her vision to bring a breath of fresh air to Portland punk. These five rippers are the result of spending many hours in a dark dank Portland basement while smoking copious amounts of weed. Hopefully these songs will make you wanna get your clit in the pit. The positive responses at our live shows has been off the hook. We're looking forward to taking Cliterati on the road in 2017." More...

Antifa Protests Turn Violent At Messe Des Morts

Violent protest apparently struck the Messes Des Morts festival that just took place November 24th - 26th in Montreal, with Portland-based metal band Uada offering this first hand account of events:

"First and foremost Uada would like to send our thanks to the promoters & staff who put a lot of hard work into organizing this great event. They were not only some of the most professional groups of organizers we've met but they also put the safety of the concert-goers first & deserve the highest respects for making that decision. We were honored for the invitation & despite the travesty Saturday night, we greatly enjoyed our time in Montreal.

"Secondly we would like to send our heartfelt apologies to the fans, as they were the ones who really suffered this weekend. We know a lot of people were looking forward to this specific night of the festival, including their first Uada experience, & it saddens us that we were unable to share it with you. We definitely will return to Montreal sometime in the future.

"When we formed in 2014 we made a point to be a band with zero political, religious or cultural bias in our viewpoints or our art. Music, art & our freedom to express it is extremely important to us but unfortunately at Messe des Morts this weekend we were forced to shut down & unable to share our art with the hundreds of people that were there to enjoy it. We know it was not specifically because of our band or in association with any of our members, but we were just as devastated by the turn in events as many others from all around the world were.

"While we were locked in the building as the riots of the Antifa organizations in Montreal intensified, we stood among a great group of cultural & racial diversity just as we did the previous night in the venue. We all gathered under one roof to forget about our differences & find common ground in something we all love, MUSIC. Meanwhile hundreds of Antifa (majority Caucasian by the way) stood outside protesting with threats, violence & vandalism. More...
