German power metal act Paragon has issued the following update, through bassist Jan Bunning:
"We are very proud to announce that the producer of our next album will be none other than Piet Sielck. We already worked with him on four of our previous albums ('Steelbound', 'Law Of The Blade', 'The Dark Legacy' and 'Revenge') and it will for sure be like a coming home for us. Piet worked with bands like Saxon and Blind Guardian and knows best what we have to sound like.
"At present we are gathering ideas and riffs and already have completed some rough versions of two songs and ideas for about four others. I can already tell you that the stuff sounds very old school and back to the our roots!
"The artwork will once again be handled by Dirk Illing who who also worked with us on previous albums like 'Law The Blade', 'The Dark Legacy' and 'Forgotten Prophecies' and his recent works include the Scorpions and all the Wacken merchandise.
"Last but not least, there will be a reunion with our photographer Stefan Malzkorn who also did a lot of our album and promo shots (like our last shots of the new lineup). He is one of the best photographers in Germany, already had a lot of front covers in Metal Hammer and Rock Hard and worked with bands like Saxon, Gamma Ray, Cradle of Filth and Apocalyptica."

Brazil progressive hard rock act Mindflow has announced that they have signed with Nightmare Records. Nightmare Records will release the band’s fourthcoming studio album, "With Bare Hands," early next year.
Nightmare Records President/Founder, Lance King comments: "I had worked with Mindflow in some capacity throughout the band’s career, even before they released their first album. I’ve watched them evolve and had the pleasure of knowing them not only as an amazingly talented band, but also as true gentlemen. When I was approached about releasing this new album, my answer was very simply ‘yes’."
Mindflow Guitarist Rodrigo Hidalgo also commented by adding: "Being with Nightmare gives us an opportunity to reach a much wider audience and to become part of the US music industry. We are all aware that in order to truly break through, we are going to have to do it in the US, European and Asian markets as well as South America. This record deal gives us that opportunity."
The new album "With Bare Hands" features most tracks produced by Ben Grosse (MARILYN MANSON, SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED) and the others by the band themselves. Nightmare Records will release the album in February, 2011. The band plans to tour extensively throughout next year.
Polish progressive metal act Riverside has issued an update on its future plans through frontman Mariusz Duda. You can read the update below:
"We've begun working on the new album, or actually two albums. Because except for the usual long album we'd also like to release a mini-album. Why? Well, the band was formed in 2001 so next year it's our tenth birthday. We'd like to celebrate and highlight this anniversary in some way. So next year we're planning to go on anniversary tour not only with invited guests but also something more--a release specially prepared for this occasion, only available at the concerts. So now we're working both on the new album and the above mentioned EP. A short break was good for us because now we have really good ideas."

The Ocean guitarist and main songwriter Robin Staps has posted the following band update online:
"Thanks to everyone who came out to see us during our recent European tours supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan and then Anathema. We've had an amazing time with both bands and would like to thank them for inviting us to join them.
"It was a great honor and fun to share the stage with The Dillinger Escape Plan. I have been a fan of this band for more than 10 years and had a blast watching them destroy every single stage they got to, 33 nights in a row. We've all become good friends over those five weeks, Loic had been guesting with them on the song 'Sunshine, The Werewolf' for the last 10 shows or so, and Ben Weinman joined us on piano for 'The First Commandment Of The Luminaries' in return. It was awesome, there is some YouTube footage up there if you care...
"The Anathema tour was equally amazing and came as a big surprise, as we didn't really know what to expect from this tour. We were overwhelmed by the positive feedback we received everywhere from Anathema's fans, as well as our own of course. We were the heavy band on this tour but it seems that the diversity of the bill was exactly what made it interesting for most people: the amazing Petter Carlssen opening up with an acoustic set, us following up with doom and destruction and then Anathema playing an epic two-plus-hour set most nights."
A new video interview has been posted online through Roadrunner Records in which Devildriver frontman Dez discusses the band's forthcoming studio album, "Beast." "Beast" is set for release in February of 2011. You can view the video interview below:
Norwegian progressive act Ulver has posted the following updates online:
"Ok, so now we have been on the road, and it has been rewarding, all fear and loathing considered. We are a domestic pack these days. The children miss their parents and we miss them. So. We have decided to limit next year's touring to two shorter blocks, one before and one after summer, plus an odd festival here and there. We would also very much like to make a few appearances overseas.
"2011 is the future, a Critical Geography, the new album of Ulver. The anthological presentation we've been hiding behind since Lillehammer is history after Warsaw.
"We are stoked to say that our blood-brothers VIRUS have accepted the offer to play their debut concert with us at London-palace Koko, as a kick-off spectacular. This is Virus' Lillehammer, and they are a bit apprehensive. We are certain though, that if you show them the same courtesy that you showed us, this will be one to remember.
"The Koko gig will be a further reunion of the old-school rebels, in that our red-bearded buddy ZWEIZZ will be opening the ball. He will also be traveling with us to a quite a few of the other venues announced. See you in the wild."

"We would like to get the quality of our release more up to par, production-wise. It will not delay us much, so it is worth it. The album is delayed already for the art, so no big deal. David (from the band Nierty) is very talented at production and has insisted on helping us better our sound quality.

When going through the Sunday Old School archives, it struck me as rather strange that while over sixty bands have been covered thus far, there has yet to be an article on a true power metal band. So today I make amends for that as we take a look at one of the most loved bands in the genre, Germany’s Blind Guardian. The band formed in 1984 under the original moniker, Lucifer’s Heritage in the town of Krefeld by singing bassist Hansi Kürsch and guitarist Andre Olbrich.
After going numerous lineup changes, the band signed a deal with No Remorse Records and decided to change their name to avoid accusations of Satanism and to stop them being lumped in with the emerging black metal bands at the time such as Mercyful Fate and Celtic Frost. Through No Remorse, the band released their debut album, “Battalions Of Fear” in 1988, which was predominantly a speed metal album in which the influence of countrymen Helloween shined through. The album was well received and a sophomore full length, “Follow The Blind” was released the next year, which featured a guest performance from Helloween founder Kai Hansen. More...
Although no official confirmation has been given yet, reports are spreading like wildfire that social rockers System Of A Down will announce tomorrow (November 29th) that they will be returning next year for a series of tour dates and festival performances, including Britain's Download Festival and Sweden's, Metaltown Festival. The only confirmed date so far is a show at the Palais Omnisports in Paris on June 6 but when asked by fans if they would perform at Download, bassist Shavo Odajian responded with, "Stay Tuned." More information on this will be given as soon as it becomes available.
The band decided to go on hiatus in 2006 following their headlining slot at Ozzfest, during which time lead singer Serj Tankian has released two studio albums as well as a live, orchestral album. Guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian and drummer John Dolmayan also kept busy by releasing an album with their project, Scars On Broadway. Bassist Shavo Odajian has kept himself occupied by directing music videos for the likes of Taproot and hardcore legends Bad Brains, as well as founding the networking website, urSESSION and a musical project with Wu Tang Clan founder RZA named Achozen.
