Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am exploring the Indian metal scene, introducing three bands spanning various metal sub-genres.
Although most foreigners are initially exposed to all the Bollywood hype of the second most populous country in the world, behind the rich and somewhat conservative culture and monolithic economy traits lies a massive subculture striving to make an identity of their own for the sole purpose of making their mark on the world of heavy metal. The scene is of course and without a doubt considered immense, as opposed to where I hail from (Sri Lanka), considering the fact that some of the biggest names in heavy metal have been stopping in India for a gig or tour for the past few years. And not forgetting the amount of record/distribution labels and promoters that strive to thrust the scene forward, India will certainly, in time to come, be held responsible for making a unique mark of their own in the history of one of the world’s most largest and evolved sub cultures.
To start off with today’s unearthing, I chose a technical death metal outfit which goes by the name of Amogh Symphony, who’ve been stirring up the scene in Mumbai as of late with the release of their debut album, “Abolishing the Obsolete System.” The brain-child of solo musician Vishal J. Singh, the band was conceived in 2003 and now has two commendable releases under their belt. Amogh Symphony incorporates a hybrid of progressive, symphonic, death metal with a nod towards Indian classical tunes and Jazz fusion. More...
Blaze Bayley, the former lead vocalist of Wolfsbane and Iron Maiden, has posted an update regarding his latest solo album, "Promise And Terror." The message reads as follows:
"I’m blogging, yay!
"I’m here with Jase Edwards at his Majestic Splendour studio mixing our new album. Jase is doing almost all the important work, while I mostly interrupt and say things like, ooh that’s heavy, or what does that big button do? Occasionally my experience leads me to say something useful but really most of the work now is down to Jase.
"Jase gave all of us a very rough mix of most of the songs a couple of weeks ago and we all made notes about parts of our performance and what kind of production we had in mind for each song and he is going through the songs incorporating those ideas alongside his own sense of how the album should tell its musical stories. Century Media Records has announced the signing of promising Spanish thrash band ANGELUS APATRIDA.

It's an honour for us to become part of the Century Media Records family, one of the labels with the best reputation worldwide and a home to some of the bands we admire the most and grew up listening to!”
ANGELUS APATRIDA’s band name mixes spanish and latin language and can be translated into english as "stateless" or "renegade" angels. Influenced by the early Bay Area thrash metal and N.W.O.B.H.M. scenes and more specifically bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Anthrax, Overkill, Pantera, Testament or Annihilator, ANGELUS APATRIDA have crafted their career in their spanish homeland so far with two independent album releases,“Evil Unleashed” (2006) and “Give ‘Em War” (2007), as well as countless of live-appearances on larger national festivals (Lorca Rock, Alternavigo, Metalway Festival, etc.) and the clubs of most of the country’s larger cities with acts like Barón Rojo, Destruction, Sepultura and many more.
