Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am revisiting Vancouver, Canada’s underground metal scene. While last time we gave some of the city's death metal bands the spotlight, this time I'm taking a look at the city’s more experimental metal acts. There is no doubt that this west coast Canadian city is abundant in metal talent, but beneath the piles of death metal and hardcore/metalcore acts lay a handful of exceptionally talented progressive and experimental bands. This week we will be taking a closer look at three of these bands.
Nylithia is an absolute force in every aspect. Its music is insanely technical and vastly diverse. While being labeled as a death metal act, Nylithia combines stylistic elements from many different areas. Technical death metal, progressive metal, ambient and melodic thrash metal are all combined into one fluent sound. The members who come together in Nylithia are also exceptionally young and are one of the youngest active bands in the Vancouver metal scene. A debut EP was released in 2008 by the name of “Infector,” and the band is currently setting up some studio time to record its second album and debut full length for a mid-2011 release. Nylithia has already made news around the world when they debuted a music video for its adaptation of a Super Mario theme song, which Metalunderground.com covered. Do not be surprised if you start to hear alot more about Nylithia in 2011. Its extremely entertaining debut music video for the track “Replicants” is available for viewing below. Nylithia may be underground today, but could easily become a household name in extreme metal in the years to come.

The Destroyers of All is the band’s second full length on Willowtip and the follow up to 2009’s Everything is Fire which garnered the band massive praise from both press and fans worldwide and was also named one of the decades best albums by MetalReview.com."
The track listing is as follows:

Asking Alexandria recently completed a North American tour with All That Remains and will now spend the remainder of the year touring the U.K. on a series of headlining shows. The band is also set to release the remix album "Stepped Up And Scratched (Stand Up and Scream Remix)" in January, 2011. This record is a remixed, electro/dubstep version of the band's debut album "Stand Up And Scream," and will include all new artwork and packaging.
Ben Bruce (guitars) has checked in with the following report upon completing the most recent tour: "I can't really think of many words to sum up the All That Remains tour. The only words that really come to mind are fucking awesome. It was a great tour. We made some great friends during this five week trek across America and had some really amazing times. The crowds at every show were great. We had our loyal and dedicated fans come out to see us, and I feel like we won a lot of new fans on this tour as well.
"It was our last U.S. tour of 2010, and what a great way to leave the country. The last tour of the year is a headlining UK run. We are so excited to be going back home and playing across Britain. The tour is sold out, which is really amazing considering it's our first UK tour and we couldn't be happier. 2010 has been amazing, but this is only the beginning. 2011 is going to be unreal."

Obscura drummer Hannes Grossman is working on his first instructional drum DVD titled “Progressive Concepts for the Modern Metal Drummer." The DVD will feature different chapters about hand/foot techniques, blast beats, advanced double bass drumming, rhythmic modulations, and song and performance tutorials.
Grossman commented on his forthcoming DVD: "After the recordings for Obscura's new album I decided to start filming because the energy of the recording process was still valid. The final motivation came from Nile-drummer George Kollias, with whom we toured in Japan. Thanks again, Bro'! Of course the DVD will not only feature solo and song performances, but also very deep advice about the things that I use, like finger control technique, hybrid techniques, advanced foot technique or odd-time signatures."
Obscura has also been confirmed for the Mass Deathtruction Festival in Belgium and the Bang Your Head Festival in Luxembourg this December.

Funeral For A Friend has checked in with the following update about releasing a new album:
"We thought we'd update you on the EP. If you pledged on a TYAD CD unsigned and unbundled you should now have it in your hands! They were sent out at the end of last week. If you pledged on a signed copy they are on their way back from being signed by the band as you read this and will also be sent out this week. Posters and t shirts are sitting ready and when the signed CDs come in all bundles containing these items will be go go go! Watch your postbox. The Casually Dressed presentation discs will also be on your walls by now. Hope you love them. The vinyl EPs and DVDs aren't in yet so stay tuned to the PledgeMusic site for news on those shortly. All of which brings us round to..
"As we're sure you're all aware we've got a new record coming out early next year. And if you liked The Young And Defenceless, this one's going to blow you a new back passage. If you did get involved in the EP then we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to you. You helped us make that record and we were overwhelmed with the support it received. We’re so happy with the EP and excitement in the FFAF camp is at an all time high. If you made it to Cardiff recently and saw the show we did with Tiger Please, we hope that came across and that you enjoyed the new songs we previewed for you.
"So what next? The album! The whole process around the EP and the freedom that working with PledgeMusic and you guys gave us was so liberating that we’re inspired to do it again. It feels like the momentum we started with Memory And Humanity and then continued with TYAD in terms of retaining control about how we make the record, and then how we choose to release it has started something we don’t want to stop right now. And you are a big part of that. So thank you! And read on. More...

Cleveland, Ohio based metal outfit Chimaira has announced that bass player Jim LaMarca has decided to retire from his position in the band. Their message reads as follows:
"After a decade of good times and achievements, our friend and band mate Jim LaMarca has decided to retire from Chimaira. We wish him nothing but the best as he settles in and starts a family.
"As for seeking a replacement… we’ll cross that bridge down the line. In the meantime, consider it 'business as usual' with the Chimaira you know and love.
"Emil Werstler (Daath guitarist) will be handling the bass duties for the rest of the year, and we’ll see you on the road!"
In a recent update, Onslaught founder and guitarist Nige Rockett revealed that the band's forthcoming new single release, "The Sound Of Violence/Bomber" will feature guest appearances from Sodom frontman Tom Angelripper and Motorhead guitarist Phil Campbell. The message reads as follows:
"We're really stoked to finally be getting some new material out in the public domain, its been such a long time since the Killing Peace album and this will be a great little sampler for the upcoming album release in early 2011. The Sound Of Violence' track is a cool representation of things to come, its got a real old school Onslaught feel but its very contemporary at the same time. A real angry no nonsense thrasher.
"Regarding the 'Bomber' cover: "Motörhead have always been a huge influence on Onslaught and our relationship goes back a long long way. So when we decided to have some fun and do a cover song in the studio, this track immediately sprang to mind, especially as its relative to the theme of the new album. We've given it a pretty aggressive Onslaught slant and thrashed it up little, but still very much retaining the original identity of the song. To make things a little more interesting, we thought we would like to add some very special guests into the mix. We asked Phil (Campbell) if he would like to come and thrash out with us and play some guitar on the track - the answer was an undoubted 'Yes'. Things we're sounding pretty cool in rehearsal but just missing that tiny piece of magic/the icing on the cake. Then Phil came in and played that awesome riff in his style and everything just fell right into place.
"We also had the idea that our friend Tom Angelripper (Sodom) would sound perfect sharing the vocal duties with our own Mr Keeler, we knew Tom Was in the studio recording the new Sodom record so the timing was perfect. We sent over the tracks and Tom did the rest, he laid down some great fucking vocals as you will hear and its really added something special to the final result.
"As you can tell really I'm buzzing about all this... its an exciting time to be in Onslaught right now." More...
Despised Icon has issued the following update:
"It’s been a while already since we made THE announcement and I know some of you are probably saying 'WTF, these guys still aren’t done yet?!' hahah Well, instead of canceling the tours we had in the works at the time, we figured it’d be a good opportunity to play in our favourite cities, tour in a few countries we had never visited before and rock out with you guys for the last time."
"After touring in 24 countries in the last 6 months, we’re finally back home and getting ready to play our last Quebec and Ontario shows next week. This final world tour was simply amazing and since this is the last time we check-in with you guys, I just want to sincerely thank you all once again for all your help and support. We’ve had some good fucking times together!"
"For those who were planning on coming to our final Montreal shows, we have a few surprises for you. The original Despised Icon line-up (2002-2006) will make its appearance and play a few songs from the first 2 albums! We're also happy to announce that our brothers in Ion Dissonance and Beneath The Massacre will be supporting their new records for the first time at home and ABACABB will also be playing one of their last shows ever with us. Our homies in The Acacia Strain, Oceano and Mychildren Mybride will also be part of the event. It's gonna be epic. Bandeapart.ca will film and host the entire last set on their website for free so make sure you demonstrate how we do things in MTL! See you soon!" More...
