Thinning The Herd Finishes New Album

New York-based Thinning The Herd announces the completion of the band's new studio full-length, which will be liberated into the general population before the end of the year. The following press release was issued about the album:

"Over the Summer, the band shacked up with studio guru Steven Albini to harness the newest tunes for what will be the metallic doom/rock act’s third studio effort. Entitled 'Freedom From The Known,' the ten-song crusher features an entirely new and improved Thinning the Herd lineup, revamped once again by founding member Gavin Spielman and now including drummer Rick Cimato (ex-Locked In A Vacancy) and bassist Wes Edmonds.

"An act constantly striving to not be pigeonholed as 'another doom band,' the newest material reflects more of the members’ blues and NYHC influences, though the presence of classic doom metal and 90’s grunge/sludge influences still shine through, and alien life forms, motorcycles, ego death, higher consciousness, transcendentalism and racism are just a few of the issues touched upon lyrically. Freedom From The Known is due out in December on the band’s own Saint Marks Records as with their previous album and EP."

The track listing is:

1. Never Wanted
2. Dr. Reed
3. Sludge
4. Buildings
5. Rabbits
6. White Liver
7. Blood
8. Path of Gold
9. Gaikat Mountain
10. In Front Of Me

Thinning the Herd will take to the streets on an extensive tour in support of "Freedom From The Known" in early 2013, with more info to be announced soon.

Pit Stories: '50s Prom Night

We scour the heavy metal and hard rock landscape to get Pit Stories from musicians across the globe, and today we have an interesting look at an "un-pit" of sorts when the crowd experiences genre confusion. Oregon based "melodic wondercore" act Whispers of Wonder shares the following story:

Whispers Of Wonder was paying live at a local venue here in Portland called the Hawthorne. We were the second to last band on the bill. Now the kind of music we play isn't necessarily as brutal as the local scene is comfortable with, and sometimes fans aren't quite sure how to act in the crowd. Now before we had hit the stage there was a big empty pit with 3 hardcore dancers in it, but once we got started something unfolded unlike anything we have ever seen at a show of our genre.

People weren't moshing. It wasn't a violent mosh fest. It was a dance pit. The best way to describe it is prom night in the 1950's, though the soundtrack wasn't exactly as upbeat. And they kept it going throughout our whole set. All of a sudden an entire crowd of people looked like some scene out of an episode of The Peanuts. It was definitely a night to remember.

Whispers of Wonder will release the new EP "The First Year" this coming November 27th, 2012 and pre-orders are available at this location. You can also check out the band's music via Facebook here.

Erra Splits With Bassist

Alabama act Erra has posted the following message online about parting ways with the band's bassist Adam Hicks:

"Just to fill everyone in: Our bassist Adam quit the band Sunday. It wasn't over any kind of personal vendetta or turmoil. He just felt that his place wasn't with the band anymore and has decided to go to college full time.

"We're all bummed as you can imagine, but we would never hold him back from a decision like that. He will still be playing with us until we find a fill-in, and will still be working with us in the studio in February.

"We ask that you please DO NOT post any kind of tryout submissions to our wall. We are undecided about how we will go about finding a replacement and until we decide whether or not we want to organize tryouts, we ask that you please do not send them to us.

"With this sad news in mind, acknowledge that the next step from here is to continue moving forward. No matter what the struggle, this band is not over until we're either satisfied with our progress or dead.

"I can tell you that we are definitely not satisfied yet. There are so many things left for us to accomplish, and we aren't stopping until we accomplish those things. We love you all, Adam loves you all, and we look forward to giving you a new record in 2013 that we are confident will not disappoint."

Napalm Records also commented: "With their first three albums, praised by fans and critics alike, Audrey Horne positioned themselves in the premier league of rock! Furthermore, the band has shown that honest and hand-made music is still more than popular. Their fourth album, Youngblood follows this tradition and presents the Norwegian hard rock quartet full of fresh energy and a truthful love of playing. Songs like 'Redemption Blues,' 'Straight Into Your Grave,' or 'There Goes a Lady' not only live up to the numerous Audrey Horne classics, but turn into irresistible tunes with catchy refrains right from the start and will stay with you for a long time. The great production provides the finishing touches and presents the listener with a warm sound that differs tremendously from the soulless plastic productions of this day and age. Youngblood is an excellent and sweeping hard rock album full of soul, and without a doubt the highlight in the discography of Audrey Horne!" More...

Slice The Cake Signs With Myriad Records

"The Siren's Song," a brand new song from Slice The Cake's forthcoming studio album set to be released via Myriad Records, has now been posted online and can be heard below. The band also comments:

"Things have grown fairly quiet in the Slice The Cake camp as of late, but we've been slowly and steadily sowing the seeds to build an amazing future for our musical meeting of minds, and we're ready to finally show the first blooming flowers to the world.

"First off, we're proud to announce our signing to Myriad Records! Myriad is a great independent label with some real ethics fuelling them, rather than being an exploitative machine that destroys artistic expression. Some other great bands that have worked/are currently working with Myriad are The Schoenberg Automaton, Bleeding Skies and Friend for a Foe. Myriad's a great little family of musicians and we're stoked to be joining them!

"Leading on from that, we shall be releasing our next album Other Slices through them, first through all good digital distributors and on CD + 10" Vinyl Picture Disk soon after. For this album, we wanted a release from the thematic intensity of our previous work, an opportunity to bring in some guest musicians, and a chance to show people what gets left on the cutting room floor. Though that's not to say we think these songs are somehow lesser works than anything we have released to date, but rather this album is a collection of songs we felt were great that just didn't fit into our previous releases for a variety of reasons. Some of it was written after the release of The Man With No Face, some of it before, some of it is a drastic departure from what we'd usually do, some of it is more traditional, but we think you'll find it all equally delicious.. The track list is as follows: More...

Disarmonia Mundi Issues Album Update

Disarmonia Mundi has checked in with the following update about the process of working on a new album:

"Hey there people, time for another quick update! The demoing is going great so far, we're somewhat halfway through the record and what we have right now is a bunch of damn heavy and solid tracks.

"We're quite pleased about our current efforts, despite being just demos we can already consider this as the heavy core of the album, very aggressive and brutal, so maybe it's about time to experiment a little bit with the remaining songs...

"Don't get me wrong, we ain't gonna switch style at all, but we'd love to make this record as complete as possible, adding a little bit of everything we've done so far, like some progressive elements in the vibe of the first record 'Nebularium' or some more melodic moments as well.

"There's been quite an evolution in the music style of this band since the very beginning and despite never drastically changing genre every release has been characterized by a different approach, so it would be cool to sum all our different influences in a sole record.

"Right, maybe it's a little too early to say this, but I'm quite sure that if you liked our music so far you're gonna like this new release as well, our trademark is still there and the new stuff can't wait to kick you in the ass..."

Kongh Reveals New Album Details

Swedish Grammy nominees Kongh have revealed the cover of their new full-length album entitled "Sole Creation." The album will be coming to shops on the 5th of February in Europe and 19th February in North Amercia.

"Sole Creation" - the 3rd album from the doom metal trio - will consist of 4 new tracks and 45 minutes of music, with a guest appearance of John Doe from Craft. The album was recorded at Teknikkompaniet (Vetlanda, Sweden) by Peter Lundin; mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult Of Luna fame. Kongh's front-man, David Johansson, commented:

"After a very long time of hard work, this album is finally ready for release. We couldn't be more happy with the way it turned out and I really think it is the best Kongh material so far. For our old fans, I am pretty sure it will be well worth the wait and I also think it holds great potential to satisfy a bunch of new listeners. In my opinion, the album is more dynamic and has much more emphasis on melodies than our previous works. At the same time it maintains the harshness and it's undoubtedly the heaviest slab of metal we've done as well."

The track listing is:

1. Sole Creation
2. Tamed Brute
3. The Portals
4. Skymning More...

Pinkish Black Signs With Century Media

Fort Worth based duo Pinkish Black has has signed a deal with Century Media Records. The label comments:

"Pinkish Black s the duo Jon Teague on drums and vocalist/synthesizer, Daron Beck. They are the continuation of The Great Tyrant, a three piece that released one LP posthumously following the passing of their bass player, Tommy Atkins. The Great Tyrant was on its way to redefining what heavy music was. When Atkins died, the only changes were the name and how to achieve this as a two piece, the latter being no small feat.

"Pinkish Black's last, self-titled album, released on Handmade Birds, featured seven tracks of dark, intense and at times, haunting songs. As one of the heaviest bands of late to feature no stringed instruments, Pinkish Black uses aura and emotions to attain what other bands (and a lot of Orange Amps and down-tuned guitars) fail to do. The band is currently touring and working on a new record, expected to be recorded by the end of the year."

Jon Teague and Daron Beck added, "We're excited at the possibilities that working with Century Media presents to us, and that lots of touring and recording will follow."

Upcoming live shows are:

11/24 - Fort Worth, TX - Lola's w/ ATRIARCH
11/28 - New York, NY - Home Sweet Home
11/29 - Baltimore, MD - TBA
11/30 - Washington, DC - Comet Ping Pong
