"Back in the Saddle Again! My profuse apologies for such a blatant Aerosmith reference there in the subject line but we are BACK! After a bit of a hiatus this summer working on new songs and re-tooling our line-up Amalgama has begun the long and laborious process of lining up some shows for the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. We figured the end of the world is coming in 2012 so we are going to attempt to cram in as many shows as humanly possible from now until then.
"Between listening to both the new Megadeth AND Slayer records we booked the first official show lined up is going to be at Bogies right here in Albany, a 'right-before-Christmas' deal where the bands are going to be attempting to do some good for the local communities in the Capital District. More details will be forthcoming about it soon along with the bands sharing the bill with us.
"If you grace us with your prescience this December you will definitely be hearing some of the new tunes we have been diligently honing over the last few months (sweating through the summer and shivering throughout the fall) to road-test in front of some rabid metal fans."

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week guitarist Matthew Bile of Walking Corpse Syndrome shares his story of an all ages mosh pit in Deer Lodge:
"Montana gets a bad rap for being so sparsely populated, and the small towns in Montana get an even worse rap. But we'll play most any place people want to see us. So when folks in Deer Lodge, where the state pen is located and our drummers are from, wanted to see us, we played a show. We rented a venue. Our friends and family ran sound and lights. And half the town showed up. The other half was busy trying to shut down the 'devil worshiping' music. It felt more like a state fair than a metal show. All ages there really is all ages, from babies up to great grandparents.
"We've also noticed that there's an inverse relationship between size of town and intensity of mosh pit. The less stuff there is to do, the crazier the kids get. And Deer Lodge kids took home the trophy. There were no fewer than 4 mosh pits going on, segregated by age group (high school, junior high, and middle school) and gender (a chick pit is a sight to behold). It was a like a scene out of that movie Fight Club, with punches thrown, pile drivers driven, and even a kid slammed into a garbage can and kicked across the floor. I almost stopped the show because I was getting a little sick watching the mayhem, but not for a single second did I see the smiles leave their faces."
Swedish death metallers Hypocrisy have issued the following statement in regards to their tour with Ensiferum and their current troubles with U.S. immigration:
“We regretfully have to officially announce the cancellation of our tour in North America. We’ve tried everything so far and it seems like the process will take longer than expected for one of the members in the band. We will try to come back as soon as possible, as we want to show our US fans that we care for them and we are ready to play the new songs live!”
Previously Hypocrisy had been in holding mode, fully expecting to join the tour that was already in progress at a later date. In an earlier statement the band explained their situation:
“Due to circumstances beyond our control, we are forced to stay home until U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services process and authorize our working visas. This is the first time the band has faced a situation like this and it’s extremely frustrating, as well as depressing, since the last thing we want to do is disappoint our loyal fans who have waited years to see us live in the US. We filed for our visas with plenty of time, but as some probably don’t know, the US government has changed its rules when it comes to visas issued to artists so it’s become tougher. Even if we have already toured the US numerous times.”
Hypocirsy had enlisted the help of Children of Bodom guitarist/frontman Alexi Laiho to temporarily fill the vacant 2nd guitarist spot on this tour alongside Ensiferum, Ex Deo, Blackguard, and Swashbuckle.
Misery Index has issued the following statement about preparing to enter the recording studio:
"Greetings all, we are happy to say the hibernation has paid off, and we have roughly 9 songs in preparation for the January recording of our 4th full length, to be recorded at Wrightway Studios in Baltimore, Maryland beginning January 2nd, 2010. These are the guys that mixed and mastered 'Traitors,' so we are excited to do the entire project there this time around. We will have more details on that in the coming weeks.
"In the meantime, we are pleased to announce, at long last, our discography collection of splits and EPS, entitled 'Pulling Out The Nails' (after the first song the band wrote). It will feature 30 tracks, and include ALL non-album material from 2001-2008, including the Overthrow and Dissent EPs, as well as the splits with Structure of Lies, Commit Suicide, Mumakil, and Bathtub Shitter, the Hang em' High 7", live tracks, bonus covers etc. The compilation was remastered by Scott Hull this year, and will be available in January on cd through our own Anarchos records imprint, and on double vinyl through Power It Up (Germany) soon after. This cd will also include an extensive 24 page booklet of details, notes, pictures, and an all-time list of all the shows we have performed. We hope its the final representation of the various incarnations of the band in the past 8 years. Til then, more news soon!"
Blackened death metallers Acheron will release their new music video for the song “I am Heathen," which is off their new album “The Final Conflict: Last Days Of God," this Saturday, November 21st, 2009. This is the first professionally filmed music video the band has done in their 20 plus years of existence.
Band front man Vincent Crowley explains the concept behind the video: “The video is about embracing the life of being a Heathen. Many people struggle with what is wrong or right, good or evil. When they go against the norm, the guilt eats away at them. Heathens don’t have negative feeling about embracing their true nature. Temptation doesn’t weaken us because in the end we control it! Lots of the symbolism in the video shows just that.”
Amorphis will release their first-ever live DVD in the spring of 2010, in time for the band's 20th anniversary. The full-length gig will be filmed this coming Friday, November 20, at Club Teatria in Oulu/Finland. In addition to this live show, the DVD will include plenty of bonus material.
Having recently returned from a five-week European tour which included venues in London, Paris, Sofia, and various German towns, Amorphis are currently on the road in Finland. Esa Holopainen comments: "After our successful European tour, it feels good to return to the Finnish stages. And it's great to notice that our 'home folks' have not forgotten us. See you at the shows!"
Greek metallers Anorimoi have posted a new studio recording video online, which can be viewed below. Samples of Anorimoi's music can also be found at their official MySpace page.
Pantheist has issued the following update about seeking a new guitarist:
"Pantheist is still looking for a second guitar player after last Saturday's unsuccessful auditions. Pantheist are a signed, London-based underground band. Rooted in heavy metal, Pantheist cross-over into 70's prog rock (King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Eloy), atmospheric doom/death (Anathema, Paradise Lost, Thergothon, Unholy) and explore byzantine, middle-eastern and Asian scales. So far we have 4 CD releases which have received great reviews internationally and routinely play in the UK and Europe.
"We are looking for a replacement for guitarist Pete Benjamin (Akercocke, Corpsing, For the Blind). You must be capable of both rhythm and lead guitar, have your own equipment suitable for live performances and be willing to commit to at least 3 rehearsals a month in London, England. Confidence, live and recording experience are necessary and skills in other instruments are highly welcome. If you feel you are the right person for the job, contact the band at firstname.lastname@example.org or through our Myspace site."
Boris has posted a video teaser trailer online for the upcoming "Japanese Heavy Rock Hits Vol.3" 7" single. The video clip can be viewed below.
Alice In Chains has issued the following statement about performing the Almost Acoustic Christmas on December 12th:
Apparently, twenty-five cities just wasn't enough for Megadeth and Slayer on their upcoming "American Carnage" North American tour which kicks off on January 18 in Seattle. The co-headliners announced today that one more date has been added to the itinerary - the bands will play Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York on February 12.
Yesterday, Slayer and Megadeth announced that they will tour the U.S. together for the first time in nearly two decades, with Testament as special guest. The now 26-date trek will include the six "Canadian Carnage" dates that had been postponed earlier this month due to Slayer vocalist/bassist Tom Araya's back problem. According to Slayer's manager, Rick Sales, "Tom continues to recover and is improving more and more every day, so I think by the time January 18 rolls around, he'll be ready for some carnage."
Confirmed dates for the "American Carnage" tour are as follows: More...

Vocalist Koen Romeijn of Netherlands based death/thrash metal group Detonation has issued the following recording update:
"Last Sunday I finished recording all the vocals. It took a little longer than planned, but the result is very satisfying I must say. It's definitely another step forward after my vocal performance on 'Emission Phase', and a slightly more aggressive tone, which suits the new/more brutal direction we are heading with Detonation. So we're pretty much finished with the recordings. (except for 1 or 2 guitar leads) That means Harry van Breda will start the mixing soon. Can't wait to hear it! Expect some samples to arrive in the not-too-far distance."
Evile has issued the following announcement about changing the venue for their Newcastle tour date on January 18th:
"Seems a mistake has been made somewhere and the Newcastle date on the January tour will NOT be at the university, it will be at the ACADEMY 2. If you're planning on going to this let people know the news and we'll see you there! Cheers. Tickets available at this location."
Gunfire 76 has issued the following statement about their canceled show in Kirksville:
"We were giving, Larry Dryden / Dryden Entertainment from Hannibal, MO, the promoter of the show a chance to honor his commitment but it seems that won't be happening - so here is the truth to why the show was canceled.
"When you start booking a tour you normally go to former promoters you have worked with and ask them if they want a show. Larry said yes, and contracts were sent. The original show was set for Springfield, IL. A little while after the show was confirmed a friend of Gunfire 76 contacted the band's manager and told him that the venue had shut down. Our agent contacted Larry to see if this was true - it was - and Larry said he was working on moving the show.
"Next thing we know the show is moved to Kirksville, MO - around 2 1/2 hours away. This does a few things, changes the band's drive time - and changes the routing of the tour. Due to the original show being in Springfield, we did not book a Chicago show - because you don't want shows that close together in the same vicinity. Now that the show was in Kirksville - we could have booked a Chicago show - but it was too late. More...

The Synaptic Dissent has issued the following statement about streaming a new song titled "1227" online:
"Finally, a new track. Been quite some time. This song has a very special place to me and I'm very happy to finally get even a rough track of it. If it sounds familiar its cuz its a variation of 'a Spoke in the rings ov Saturn' mixed with other parts of songs off the upcoming album. In the track you will hear a few little noises hums and whatnot. Most were unintentional but I gotta thing for weird noises and background stuff like that. It needs a little more tweaking and eventually a master, but Ive heard way worse on myspace so I have no problem posting it. Enjoy and please be critical."

The Femme Metal Fest 2009, the first of what is set to be an annual event, was a huge success, with a great turnout and amazing performances. Before the Femme Metal Festival had even started, anticipation was running high outside the Asylum in Birmingham, where I took the opportunity to ask my fellow festival-ers who they were looking forward to watching. Unsurprisingly, symphonic metal band Delain came out on top, with everyone I asked excited at the prospect of witnessing their first ever UK gig. More...

Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano recently spoke with I Heart Guitar about a number of topics, which of course included the mystery of whether or not former Anthrax vocalist John Bush will return to the band and the new Anthrax album, "Worship Music" which was shelved after the band split with lead singer Dan Nelson. Some excerpts are as follows:
I Heart Guitar: I guess the big question people want to know the answer for is, is John Bush singing at these performances (Soundwave Festival)?
Rob Caggiano: "Yes he is!"
I Heart Guitar: Cool! I feel like a jerk asking this question because you've probably heard it a million times lately, but is he coming back on board for good, or is this an extended one-off?
Caggiano: "Nothing's really official right now. Honestly I can't really give a definite answer on that. It's looking really good. It's feeling really good and the shows we played were amazing so far. And it looks like he's going to sing on the record. So we're just kinda taking it one day at a time and hoping for the best, but right now everything's really positive and everything feels great!"
