On a chilly Saturday evening, I dropped into the cozy Silk City Taproom in Florence, Massachusetts, for a special one-off show featuring Boston's breakout underground metal stars, Revocation. They released their jaw-dropping and versatile third studio album "Chaos Of Forms" through Relapse Records earlier in 2011 to wide acclaim, and had just wrapped up an opening slot on tour with Chimaira when they decided to revisit their regional turf in a far more intimate way.
Prior to loosing a toxic river of thrash, death, speed, groove, and progressive metal on the tiny club's adoring patrons, three of Revocation's members checked in with Metalunderground.com on Silk City's outdoor second-floor smoking balcony. Huddled in a corner and speaking above the nearby din of a rowdy, liquored-up crowd, guitarist/vocalist Dave Davidson, drummer Phil Dubois-Coyne, and second guitarist Dan Gargiulo indulged me with some amusing banter.
The full, unabridged transcript follows below - complete with some unruly outside interjections too silly not to reproduce here. More...
Finnish act Decaying has issued the following announcement about the release of the band's new "Encirclement" album:
"Our sophomore album, entitled 'Encirclement' is schechuled for release 2nd of January 2012 through Hellthrasher Productions (Poland)! Encirclement is going to feature 10 tracks, listed below. The opening one is an instrumental piece, followed by fully re-recorded version of Operation Citadel (demo version can be found on Youtube).
"The lyrics on the album are mostly handling specific events in the World War 1 & 2, but there is also other topics included - like media propaganda themed 'Public Enlightenment,' a tongue-in-cheek written 'Artillery Barrage' and 'Conclusion' which even relates to events happened this year. Finally 'Encirclement' culminates to the 10 minute epic 'The Rising Sun,' which is without a doubt one of the strongest tracks we've written.
"You can expect over 60 minutes worth of extremely heavy & old school death metal in the vein of Asphyx, Bolt Thrower and Death, but with a twist! This is definitely an improvement over our first effort, Devastate. Stay tuned! The artwork was designed once again by Bartlomiej Kurzok."
The track listing is as follows:
2. Operation Citadel
3. From The Cradle To The Grave
4. Artillery Barrage
5. Battle Of The Somme
7. On The Path Of Subjugation
8. The Hell Of Verdun
9. Public Enlightenment
10. The Rising Sun More...

This winter, Boston thrashers Razormaze will be embarking on an east coast tour and recording a second full-length album. The album will be recorded by Pete Rutcho (Revocation, Ravage, Frozen) and will feature 8 tracks of all new material.
It has been almost 2 years since the band’s last effort, "Miseries." “We keep trying to one up ourselves with each release. The writing for this album took quite a while and we think it’ll show,” says the band's vocalist and rhythm guitarist Alex Citrone “we’re very proud of what we’ve got and we can’t wait to get it out there. Overall it’s definitely more aggressive, heavier and more technical. We’ll be playing all of it on the tour.”
Razormaze was recently voted the title of “Best Metal Act” in Boston’s Best Music Poll and is currently nominated for a Boston Music Award in the same category. The band's upcoming tour dates are as follows:

Vancouver, British Columbia's experimental metal band Seven Nines and Tens' debut full-length album, "Habitat 67," arrives three years almost to the day after their first live performance as a band. Metalunderground.com has the exclusive stream of two songs off the new album, which is set to be released on December 3rd at their CD release show. The band is still considering options for online distribution. In the meantime, you can stream "Saga of Butyric Fermentation" and "Thermocapsulary Dehousing Assister" in the player below.
Founding member Dave Cotton commented on their time together: "In hindsight, I think we spent the time between then and now wisely enough, playing any stage that would have us and always striving to refine and delve further into the sound we create."
Seven Nines and Tens recorded and produced these songs with their friend Hayz Fisher between October 2010 and October 2011 at the Dead Room and Factory Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Another friend of the band, Adam Veenendaal, mastered them.
Here is the "Habitat 67" track listing:
1. Thermocapsulary Dehousing Assister
3. Crystalline Xanthine Alkaloid
5. The Watch that Ends the Night
6. Saga of Butyric Fermentation
7. I Grow Tired
8. Famke Jansenn
9. Retrograde Orbit
10 Voir Dire
11. Day of the Living
Cotton commented on the future as well: "As far as our future plans are concerned, all of this striving and delving has yielded 20+ new songs that we are going to be demoing over the winter and taking out on tour before we track them properly in the spring of 2012."
Metalunderground.com previously premiered the track "Crystalline Xanthine Alkaloid," which is also available for free download.
"Whisper," the new album from Chicago metallers Dark Spectrum, will be released for free download on November 22nd via Bit Torrent and the band's official Reverb Nation page. The CD was recorded at Apothica Studios in Batavia, Illinois. Joe Tiberi of Mechina once again handled production and recording duties, as well as the mixing and mastering.
The track listing is as follows:
2. The Soil Is Shour
3. Perplexed In Chaos
5. Blood Of The Lambs
Commented Dark Spectrum bassist Thatcher Markham: "We had a full blown concept for an album cover but it had to be scrapped for two reasons, contractual obligations and money. We disbanded and wanted to release the album for free but the fact that we weren't going to sell it went against the contract signed with the artist. So what you see, this isn't what it was meant to be, but it serves its purpose. Fitting that this was the last photo ever taken of us as a band.
"All the time, effort, work, heart, and soul, to just let these songs disappear and fade away without a release of any sort is just completely unacceptable to us. Even though we will probably never be a band again the four of us are extremely proud of what we wrote and recorded. At this point its just about getting the music out there for free to anyone that wants it and about closure and solace for us. More...
CypherSeer is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to the last release "Origins." Guitarist Sergio Ribiero has checked in with an update on the band's progress:
"First order of business - CypherSeer would like to announce that for the next record, Martin Brändström from the band Dark Tranquillity, will be laying down all the keyboard work. After months searching and speaking with some of the industry's best and most respected keyboardists, Martin just absolutely blew us away with his ideas and playing. We felt an immediate connection and we felt his keyboard style would fit our music the best, since we are aiming for a more updated overall sound on the up-coming record.
"Speaking of our new record... We are currently recording demos to be shipped out for editing, and soon after that, the actual recording will begin. As of right now the projected date for the start of recording is mid January. In terms of the actual songs, we feel that we are getting ever-closer to the sound that defines CypherSeer. We were very meticulous and made sure all the songs were to their absolute potential before we started demoing them. More...
Glenn Danzig’s recent comments and alleged behavior at Fun Fun Fun Fest provoked much talk among the heavy metal community. Mainstream publications such as Rolling Stone brought this conversation to a much larger audience. Besides trying to instigate a riot, Danzig bemoaned playing the Black Stage. He said he is as big as Slayer, so he should be on the larger Orange stage. The Slayer comment sparked a debate among Metal Underground’s readers. Who is bigger and more popular—Slayer or Danzig? Now that the question has been asked, I’ve done some searching to determine who has a larger fan base.
In addition to providing album sales numbers, I will look at some of the factors that contribute to the popularity of both bands. On one side, we have the blues-laden doom metal of Danzig. Often characterized as the Satanic Elvis, Danzig possesses unmistakable, deep vocal tones and lupine howls. Short but muscular, his mic-whipping, air-grabbing stage antics convey a barbaric image. On the other side, we have thrash metal legends, Slayer. In addition to being part of the Big 4 thrash acts of the 80s, they pushed the boundaries of speed, and broke ground for thrash, death and black metal. Kerry King's whammy bar solos perfectly relate the wicked vibe of each song. The battle cry of “SLAYEEEER” is as common at a metal concert as a Marshall half-stack.
Danzig showcased material as Danzig Legacy at Fun Fun Fun Fest, so Slayer is butting heads against not one band but three. The Misfits and Samhain portions of his set added a crossover appeal, which proved perfect for a fest that catered to punk and metal. Still, I’m going to assume that many of the Fiend Club members also listen to Danzig.
Besides Dave Lombardo, Slayer has boasted a stable lineup, without bringing over fans from previous bands. Kerry King spent time in Megadeth, but he doesn’t appear on any Megadeth albums, so he obviously didn’t pull fans from Megadeth. Fans will always recognize Dave Lombardo as Slayer’s drummer, even though he has commanded the beat for other bands such as Philm, Grip Inc. and Fantomas. More...

India's Skyharbor has issued the following statement about pushing back the release of the band's new album:
"Hi everyone, Keshav here. There is some news about Skyharbor that I feel I need to let you all in on. Please read carefully and thoroughly!
"Literally just a few days ago, we were presented with an unprecedented opportunity, one that is almost unheard of for a band from India, and has certainly never been offered to one that is yet to have either its debut album or concert done. This opportunity is so great that I simply could not pass it up, for the long term future and prospects of Skyharbor as a band.
"However, this does mean that our debut album will have to be delayed yet again by a few weeks. I'm very much aware how eagerly all of you are anticipating this release, and I've braced myself for the inevitable backlash that will occur due to this news, especially as it is just days away from the 20th. But I am very confident of one thing - when we are able to reveal the exact nature of what has happened (which will be in a matter of days), you will ALL be very happy, delighted even - our Indian fans because of the nature of the opportunity and what it means for our scene, and our overseas fans because we will now be much more accessible to you!
"What this also means is that we will not be selling the album, CD or digital, at the NH7 Weekender festival (which we are still playing BTW), like we had originally planned - but again, this is only because there will be a much better product coming now.
"I hope that you guys will be understanding and will continue to support us at what is now a very critical moment in our career as a band. In the meantime, please do come out to our show at the NH7 Weekender at 3PM on the 20th, where we will still be playing almost all of the album live! I promise to have more information for you in the coming days."

Finnish metal band Waltari recently celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band. Formed in 1986, they’ve become known in their careers as a band that excels at combining different styles of music, especially creating diverse and refreshingly open minded variations within rock and metal. So it was only natural that at their anniversary show at Nosturi in Helsinki, some of the areas diverse quantity of musicians within the Finnish musical community (and a few other from other areas! ) would be taking the stage to perform with these heroes of rock.
First up to take the stage was Lord Bishop of Lord Bishop Rocks. I cannot stress the diversity of this show enough, especially in the case of getting to hear this upbeat 70’s influenced rock. The charismatic Lord Bishop played well with the musicians of Waltari, and the effect was an intro to the night that spoke purely of the good times ahead.

James Murphy, former guitarist of both Death and Testament, as well as founding member of the death metal band Disincarnate, has had a relapse of the brain tumor that sidelined him back in 2001. Murphy is currently accepting donations to cover the costs of his medical expenses. You can donate by heading over here. His publicist also issued the following statement:
"Murphy stated that the tumor had returned but that it was a non malignant and that it was being treated pharmacologically. Unfortunately, those medications have serious side effects that have left him unable to work. The option for different medications is available, but at a cost of over $1000 a month, and he needs a minimum of 6 months of medication for treatment to be effective. With his medical expenses extremely high and James not being able to work due to the side effects of the current medications, the metal community is being asked to come together and help one of their brothers and donate to help him beat this once and for all.
"In August 2001, Murphy was discovered to have a massive tumor growth near the base of his brain (on the pituitary gland) and was quickly scheduled for an urgent life-saving operation. James underwent surgery on September 17th, 2001, involving a Maxillary Swing procedure that made entry through the left side of the face. An incision was made underneath the left eye, along the side of the nose, and finally through the middle of the upper lip. The facial tissue was then pulled back and the cheekbone removed. They then cut through James' sinus and made entry below the orbit of the eye to remove a portion of the growth. More was removed through an incision made in the soft pallet inside the mouth. About 70% of the tumor was removed, the remainder being too close to vital structures to risk further damage. More...
