Death Angel is one of the great underdog stories of American metal. Arguably the "baby band" of the San Francisco Bay Area thrash explosion, their initial late '80s lineup formed even before some members could legally vote or purchase a Hustler. After three cult classic studio albums, an early '90s breakup threatened to consign Death Angel to footnote status in rock history - if not for the resurgence in popularity of old school thrash over a decade later.
With a reinforced lineup and a youthful energy undiminished by time, the band firmly planted itself back on the metal map in the 21st century, via indie giant Nuclear Blast Records. Death Angel then faced perhaps their toughest challenge to date when founding members Andy Galeon (drums) and Dennis Pepa (bass) departed, leaving a gaping wound that providence would see healed by the recruitment of newcomers Will Carroll and Damien Sisson. "The two white boys in the band," frontman Mark Osegueda has joked, referencing the group's collective Filipino heritage. The resulting studio album, 2010's "Relentless Retribution," is a defiant roar of triumph that led to a furious worldwide touring campaign - all leading up to a coveted opening slot on one of the most anticipated American metal tours of 2011 with New York legends Anthrax and fellow Bay Area crushers Testament.
On Veteran's Day - or so-dubbed "National Metal Day" - I sat down in Worcester, Massachusetts with guitarist Ted Aguilar, who joined the band upon its initial 21st century reunion and has since proven an integral member. More...
What better place to spend 11/11/11 than Atlantic City? Okay, maybe Las Vegas, Miami, etc… Anyway, we ended up in A.C. to test the gambling gods on the roulette table and have some fun. Last minute (a week prior) Motley Crue singer, Vince Neil, scheduled two solo shows for the night. This was never part of the original plan, but you know…when in Vegas (I mean Atlantic City): Go to the Vince Neil show. More...
Every Monday we take a look at three bands in the metal underground that deserve to be heard by a wider audience.
While normally the various bands unearthed are all grouped together by sub-genre or geographical location, this week we’re headed into slightly different territory to examine three bands that don’t necessarily share a similar sound. Instead, these three groups all have a common thread in that they are highly prolific artists with many releases under their belts, but somehow still haven’t managed to become highly known in the metal community.
Check out the music of Root, Transmetal, and Senmuth below and decide for yourself if you’d like to join these band’s relatively small but loyal fanbases.
This Czech Republic act is a bit of a cult hit in the underground, developing its own unique sound that isn’t quite black metal or avant-garde or ambient or anything else, but has echoes of all those styles and more.
Root has a solid nine full-length releases under its belt scattered throughout a 20+ year history, having just dropped the new album “Heritage of Satan” (reviewed here). Until recently, Root was almost completely unknown by fans of European dark metal acts, only starting to see more exposure after a series of re-releases through I Hate Records in 2008.
For more info on Root, head over to the band’s official website here, or listen to a sampling of songs off “The Temple in the Underworld” and “The Book” below.
Last Wednesday Wolves in the Throne Room graced Helsinki with their presence, and brought a bit of that relaxed West Coast vibe to a country very familiar with their love for nature. Aaron sat down with me and explained about the phenomenon of Black Metal in the public eye; the importance of identity, culture, and tradition; as well as what has driven Wolves in the Throne Room down this path to Europe and the alchemy of it all. Previously Colin has been heard fronting his own projects Dark Crystal and Karuna. You can check out Karuna here."
Steve Williams also commented, "We are thrilled to welcome Colin into the band. He impressed each and every one of us at his audition a couple of months back, and he really understands what Power Quest is all about. His voice and personality are exactly what we have been looking for. Welcome aboard brother!"
Colin added, "I'm really happy to be joining PQ! I've been following the band since their very first demo release and have already been singing PQ songs for many years to help me keep my vocal skills up to scratch. I've always thought it would be great to get the opportunity to sing with an internationally acclaimed outfit such as Power Quest, and was really glad when I got the invite from Steve to come over and jam with the band to see how the chemistry is. Well it was really cool hanging out with the PQ family over those days, and I tried to give them a good blast of my voice in the rehearsal room so they could see if my technique and style was what the band is after. We both agree it's a good match, and I'm really enthusiastic about being the new voice of PQ and offering as much as I can to the band on the old songs, as well as working with the guys to write new material together. I look forward to many gigs and tours, and plenty of craic as we say in Ireland!"

RAMMSTEIN will bring their brand new live production to North America this spring for 21 dates kicking off April 20 in Ft. Lauderdale. Tickets for the tour, presented by Live Nation, will go on sale beginning Friday, Nov. 18 and will be available at Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com.
Demand for Rammstein's pyrotechnic-laden performances has been so great in Europe, where they regularly play capacity level soccer stadiums, the band spent nearly a full decade without setting foot on North American shores. In December 2010, the sextet returned to North America for two sold out shows including a performance at Madison Square Garden. Rammstein followed with a 9-day trek of major North American cities in Spring 2011.
The tour announcement comes on the heels of news of the band's first retrospective release, "Made In Germany 1995 - 2011," which will be available in North America (through a distribution deal between Universal Germany and Vagrant Records) on Dec. 13. Rammstein recently released "Mein Land," a new four-track digital single that features two new songs: the title track and "Vergiss uns Nicht" as well as remixes from BossHoss and Mogwai. A video directed by Jonas Akerlund for "Mein Land" can be seen here. Rammstein's most recent full-length album, "Liebe Ist Für Alle Da," debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 in October 2009.
