Girl Scout Hand Grenade Hosts the “Cancer is Bad Tour” at the Machine Shop to benefit Bass Player Andrew Hargrove.
When Girl Scout Hand Grenade Bass Player Andrew Hargrove was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in August of this year, the local music community was devastated and there was an immediate response to help. Upon learning that this form of cancer is often very treatable but without insurance, extremely expensive, the band reorganized to perform as a four piece set out to raise money for their band mates mounting medical costs.
Offers from other bands to help poured in as the news of Andrew’s condition spread. Punk band Dick Hickey was the first to throw a benefit show for the bassist in Port Huron and over a dozen other bands offered their support. Because of Andrew’s involvement in the music community and Girl Scout Hand Grenade’s notoriety for other charity events (the band hosts the annual Food For Music event during the holidays to raise money for the Eastern Michigan Food Bank and plays numerous benefit shows throughout the year) throwing a series of benefit shows to raise money for Andrew and awareness of this disease just made sense.
The “tour” will kick off at the Machine Shop (3539 S. Dort Hwy. Flint, MI 48507) Saturday, November 28th with an 18 and over show featuring: Girl Scout Hand Grenade, A Sleepless Malice, Blood of the Unborn, Fernando’s Xcursion, Dick Hickey, and C.I. Doors are at 7 with a $5 cover for 21+ $8 18-20. Local business and bands have donated items for a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle drawing will run most of the night.
An all ages benefit will follow at the Second Generation Ballroom (4437 Richfield Road Flint, MI 48506) on Friday, December 11th, with bands: I Once Was…, Given Six, The 2nd System, Pearl Snap Western Brown and more to be announced.
Further Shows are in the works for the Detroit and Lansing area.
Artist Tom Sanford, whose painting of the assassination of Dimebag Darrell is to be auctioned this weekend, has issued the following statement through his website about the controversy surrounding the piece:
"It seems that my 2005 painting 'The Assassination of Dimebag Darrell' is going back to auction and this has re-ignited the ire of Dimebag’s fans. In fact I learned of the auction through a surge in the regular trickle of hate mail/criticism that this piece engenders. Roadrunner records blog, called Blabbermouth, posted a short (and i thought remarkably fair) article about my painting and the upcoming Phillips de Purdy auction. This post was picked up by various other metal blogs and was heavily commented on by their readers. The post linked to my website, and led to an onslaught of email to me. Most of the email amounted cursing me out while accusing me of crimes ranging from poor taste to exploiting the death of Dimebag. I guess that I am guilty of both.
"Back in early 2005, when I made the painting, the reaction of Dimebag’s fans was actually not on my mind. I was interested in this tragedy as a historical event that occurred in our media saturated world, but was without a defining image of the event. Normally the pervasive 24-hour news and infotainment industry is able to define news worthy events with an image or video. In this case the event was only captured in the accounts of witnesses who saw the horrific event live at the Alrosa Villa. This afforded me an opportunity to make a painting that might be the only visual depiction of the tragedy, and yes I exploited this opportunity.
"In my defense I thought it to be an extremely significant event, and one that needed to be remembered. I thought my painting might help remember the tragedy. The painting is certainly in poor taste, but I think that when one is describing a mass murder, etiquette is really not an issue. More...

Montreal based technical death metallers Augury have announced the departure of their drummer Antoine Baril.
Antoine Baril commented:
"I’m very sad to have to announce my departure from Augury. Some personal and professional reasons have made multiple tours impossible for me at the moment. I wish all the best for Augury because those wonderful guys are making incredibly good music. I will never forget those memorable shows and I would like to thank everyone for their support on the road everywhere we've been on tour."
Augury also commented:
"Augury thanks Antoine for all the good times and excellent music, and we wish him well in all aspects of his life. He will remain a close friend for all of us. For the upcoming tour with Vader, drummer Robin ‘Frog’ Stone from Australian industrial metal mad scientists The Amenta will take over the drum throne. He is a very tight and skilled drummer, having learned our set in a matter of hours. We have a new drummer ready in Montreal for the upcoming tours. Videos and name will be revealed soon.”

Immolation has posted a new studio recording blog through Decibel Magazine. Excerpts from the blog follow:
"Since the last update, Bob and I spent the remainder of the week laying down the guitar and bass rhythm tracks. As soon as Bob was finished up with the rhythms, he then had to go song by song and record all the additional guitar rhythms and overlay sections. This became a long and involved process because there were so many layers in the songs that it became hard to keep track without referring to the pre-production. As soon as he thought he was all finished with one song, he would check the pre-production demos and realize he had more to go. So this is how it went for most of Friday and all day Saturday. I managed to finish up the bass tracks on Friday night hoping to get in there Saturday to start vocals, but this didn’t happen. After spending almost two full days with the additional guitar parts, Bob was ready to start leads, but now we were running out of time. We essentially had one day to get all the leads and vocals done, which we knew wasn’t realistic. More...

Front man Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth has issued the following recap of their European Progressive Nation tour alongside Dream Theater and Unexpect:
"Yes, time for another update! Aren't you excited!!!??? Meh...
"I just got back home from Tel Aviv/Israel where we had an amazing show! Loved it! We played a bit funky (not as in swinging, more as in a bit ‘shit’) but it was alright. Crowd was AWESOME! Loud, big and steaming HOT! On top of things, downing a few cold beers on the beach around midnight in 22 degrees celcius is NOT bad, when it's November, and you're...Swedish. Yuri (promotor) took great care of us, I even had red roses in my room and a little plate of fruit + 2 showers. It was extravagant, I felt like a fatter, uglier and less talented Mariah Carey.
"Anyways, we also just recently finished the Progressive nation Euro tour with our buddies Dream theater, Bigelf and Unexpect. It was a great nice tour and we had many good shows. I can't say which one was the best, but it was certainly amazing to play Hovet in our hometown. It's where we all used to go and see metal shows in the 80's. Love that place, but I admit, when we're up there I was feeling like....’OK, whatever’. It was like any stage really. Wembley arena was cool too. Spektrum in Oslo, that place in Rome. Ahoy in Rotterdam....several kickass venues and several kickass crowds. More...

Jack Slater has issued the following update about releasing a new album:
"Our 4th album is gonna be called 'Extinction Aftermath' and will contain 10 tracks that easily be the best songs Jack Slater has recorded yet! Svencho, sexy Singer of Aborted, again did a great job with the cover and somehow connects with the artwork from our last album 'Blut/Macht/Frei'. We printed some covers for the label promo and they look really awesome! I like!
"The album will contain pretty diverse tracks, all death metal, but everyone with a slightly different approach. For example, the 4th track 'Funkenflug' will be something you have never heard before from Jack Slater, but you will love it! I promise! Every track turned out great and will please everyone who likes intelligent death metal, that's more than just blasting away. All we have left to do is find a fitting label and a release date, then it's time to unleash the album."

British thrash metal group Evile has revealed some more details regarding the forthcoming memorial shows the band has announced in England. The band will be joined by Irish thrash metal band Gama Bomb as well as London based thrash metal group Mutant and Bristol based thrash outfit Seregon for the shows. The concerts are being held to remember the bands bass player Mike Alexander who tragically passed away while the band was on tour with Amon Amarth last month in Sweden. A huge raffle will be taking place at the shows which include signed items from big name metal bands and limited edition prizes. The shows will be held on December 7th, 2009 at Rio's in Leeds and December 8th, 2009 at the Underworld in London. Tickets are £8 in advance and can only be purchased at the venues or £10 on the door. All money made from the shows will be going towards the family of Mike Alexander. To view a list of the raffle prizes, you can head over to the Mike Alexander memorial website.
Evile lead guitarist Ol Drake comments: "These two nights are for all the friends and fans of Mike who haven't had a real chance to say goodbye, and also for us to hold something a lot more appropriate than any funeral could be. Mike wasn't religious, and his beliefs were solely based in music, so there is no better way to say goodbye. He lived for music and metal. We picked a few bands who Mike liked and we'll no doubt be playing a few covers on the night. We're holding a raffle with LOTS of items kindly donated by some amazing people and bands from around the world. Keep an eye on our sites for details of these - please come along and grab a raffle ticket - all money is going to the family."
Gama Bomb frontman Philly Byrne adds: "It's a real honour to play these shows for Mike. He was a star of a man and a brilliant friend, and it'll be great to do something for his family and friends. We're sure everyone will show their support for him at the shows."
Danish power metal outfit Mercenary has announced that they have parted ways with vocalist Mikke Sandager, drummer Mike Park and keyboard player Morten Sandager. A message from guitar player Jakob Molbjerg reads as follows:
"Well, well, changes that have been underway for a long time can sometimes come about in the blink of an eye. Last week, Mike (Park, drums) told us that he wanted to leave the band permanently. The rest of us did some serious thinking and soul-searching, sat down and had ‘the big talk’ and came to the agreement that the only way to continue the band was to part ways with Mikkel (Sandager, vocals) and Morten (Sandager, keys) as well. During the last year we have been working on a new album and it has become clear that we no longer share the same vision and enthusiasm about the direction and the future of the band. Martin (Buus, lead guitar), Rene (Pedersen, bass/vocals), Mike and I wanted to play faster, heavier and more modern (yet old school) material, but for the band as a whole this evidently didn't work out.
"In many ways this is a painful choice. But it also allows us to close a chapter in the band's career and our shared lives, that we're all immensely proud off, in a dignified way that doesn't let ourselves or our fans down. Nobody would be better off if we released an album that we didn't all truly believe in and felt as fiercely passionate about as we have done about all of our past albums. More...

We're a little late on noticing this one, but Hydrahead is streaming the recent release of Pyramids with Nadja, a massive collaborative effort between Pyramids, Nadja and a number of otherwise established musicians. The instrumentation on this record might be described as an energized ambient, infused with an intelligent ear for avant-garde metal and an almost indiscernible adherence to a sort of pop sensibility. Pyramids with Nadja successfully melds the still unparalleled compositional methodology developed in Pyramids' "s/t" album with Nadja's trademarked dirge-like shoegaze. All members of Pyramids and Nadja perform on all four tracks on the record.
Pyramids with Nadja also features: Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil (performs bass on track one and four), Albin Julius of Der Blutharsch (performs vocals on track four), Chris Simpson of Mineral (performs vocals on track two), Colin Marston of Dysrhythmia and Behold the Arctopus (co-produced/engineered track one) and James Plotkin of Khanate, Khlyst, O.L.D. Phantomsmasher (mixed and mastered the entire album). And if that weren't enough, Ulver and Lustmord remixed the track, "Into the Silent Waves," for a limited 12", to be released on Hydra Head early 2010.
You can stream "Pyramids with Nadja" here.
Here's the "Pyramids with Nadja" tracklisting:
1. Into the Silent Waves
2. Another War
3. The Sound of Ice and Grass
4. An Angel Was Heard to Cry Over the City of Rome
