Phil Anselmo, the vocalist of New Orleans based supergroup Down and former singer of Pantera and Superjoint Ritual, has posted a video message online in which he offers his condolences to Gwar, after the recent death of their guitarist Cory Smoot, who passed away in his bunk on November 3rd. You can check out the video below. A memorial service for Smoot will take place tomorrow at the Bennett Funeral Home Chesterfield Chapel, located at 14301 Ashbrook Parkway in Chesterfield, VA. The service begins at 4pm and is open to the public. More...
During the summer of 2011, Circle of Chaos vocalist Antonio da Silva decided to leave the band to focus on his other musical projects. The band spent the months following his departure looking for a new permanent member to fill his place, and after auditions the group has now announced the recruitment of Julian Loiza (Rage Invest).
"We feel that Julian will fit perfectly in Circle of Chaos with his powerful voice and strong presence" says the band, which is right now rehearsing for upcoming shows in Lübeck and Bremen. "We feel confident that the new line-up will deliver, and this change has made the band stronger."
There are no hard feeling between the band and former vocalist Antonio, who commented: "My departure is an amicable one and there are no hard feelings involved from any side I love the guys and we'll still be friends after. I wish all the success that will befall them and all the best. As for me I will be concentrating on my other two bands: Kinabalu and Barbus. Thanks to everyone and keep listening to Circle of Chaos!"
The German titans of technicality, Obscura, have finally hit North American shores for a proper headlining run to show off their blistering blend of death metal and progressive musical ideals. The Metalunderground.com sponsored trek is in support of Obscura's newest tech-death masterpiece "Omnivium" (check out our review here).
A day before the tour started, I had the chance to chat up Obscura guitarist Christian Müenzner about the new run of shows, as well as the band's recent lineup change with the addition of new bassist Linus Klausenitzer. Christian also talked about the set list for the tour and how crisscrossing the U.S. is much different from a European run due to the long travel distances involved. More...
Two years after their debut album "Impuls," black metallers Animo Aeger are returning with a new mini album in December. Ashen Productions commented on the release:
"With the first four songs being recorded in a professional studio this time, 'Fieber' shows huge progressions in terms of songwriting and musical direction; the bizarre and twisted atmosphere of the first effort is still there, but the extensive use of clean vocals and the massive studio sound add up to a result that is much more theatralic, catchy, aggressive and truly unique. 'Fieber' also includes two older rehearsal room tracks which show the transition from old to new, resulting in a style that sometimes captures the atmosphere of early Urfaust recordings."
You can check out a song taken from the mini-album, titled "Heufeuer," in the player available below.
Battlecross will be hitting the road in November alongside Rose Funeral and Diamond Plate in support of hardcore vets Full Blown Chaos. In a new video posted online, the band talks about the upcoming tour as well a recent performance at the CMJ Metalsucks/Thousand Knives showcase with Kvelertak, Skeletownwitch, and more. That video can be seen now below.

Evil United has just released the band's first full-length self-titled album, which features the throat of Jason McMaster on vocals (Broken Teeth, Watchtower, Dangerous Toys) the earthquake rhythm section of Don Van Stavern (Riot, S.A.Slayer) on bass, Shakes West (Murderdolls, Neurotica, Sebastian Bach) on drums, and rounding out the evilness are the speed picking twin axe attack of guitarists T.C. Connally (PB/DC, Cult to Follow) and John Valenzuela (PB/DC, Urial).
The band has now posted a video clip online for the song "Dawn of Armageddon," which is available below. T.C. Connally comments on the video:
"When we started to scout locations for the Dawn of Armageddon video shoot, we really didn't have to go far from our Texas home base. Texas has had record droughts and hellish high temperatures this year and at times it really felt like the dawn of armageddon. Most of the video was shot at a dried up lake bed during the 110 degree drought. We also drove out to Bastrop, Texas and got some footage of the damaged caused by the Bastrop fires. The Bastop Texas fire was a major wildfire that struck Bastrop county Texas on Sept. 2011 and was extinguished in Oct. 2011. Thousands of homes were destroyed making it the most destructive single wildfire in Texas history. We feel the video captures a glimpse of the destruction most of the world is seeing in 2011 but through the eyes of our home state of Texas." More...

Commented Stormzonne vocalist John "Harv" Harbinson: "Apart from being a singer of heavy metal music for many years, I have also always been a huge fan of heavy metal, and I have no hesitation in saying that the new Stormzone album, 'Zero to Rage' is something that as a singer I am immensely proud of and as a fan I would definitely go out and buy!"

I'm not sure if VH1 got this idea from the Spinal Tap fan who last year declared that 11/11/11 would be declared as "Nigel Tufnel Day" or came up with the idea on their own. But VH1 Classic has dubbed November 11th as "National Metal Day" and promised a full day of metal coverage.
While they have been ramping up the metal coverage since November 1st, and will be airing metal coverage for the entire day of November 11th, the day itself, here are the special features promised for prime time:
Behind The Music Remastered: Megadeth premieres Friday, November 11 at 9PM ET/PT. They’ve been the champions of thrash metal for nearly thirty years, despite discord, addiction and infighting. Updated to the original episode are Dave Mustaine’s crippling hand injury which threatens the band’s survival, a painful law suit and more walk outs and throw outs of band members. Now they’re in the Big Four and still aiming for the top spot, but even if Dave Mustaine is happy with the new line up he remains unhappy about their ranking in the top ten of heavy metal—still just behind Metallica.
Metal Evolution Chapter 1: Pre-Metal premieres Friday, November 11 at 10PM ET/PT. The premiere episode of Metal Evolution Chapter 1: Pre-Metal will focus on Pre-Metal, the earliest sounds of metal that can be heard in the music of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix. Subsequent episodes of the series will explore genres ranging from British Heavy Metal to Glam Metal to Thrash Metal, and artists from Iron Maiden to KISS to Metallica and more. Metal Evolution is an 11-episode docu-series produced by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films and is based on the groundbreaking Heavy Metal Family Tree. The Heavy Metal Family Tree is a 26 sub-genre genealogical chart which reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the chart as his road map, host/producer and metal head turned anthropologist Dunn, crisscrosses the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. After the premiere episode on National Metal Day, “Metal Evolution” will move to its regular time slot on Saturdays at 10 PM ET/PT, beginning Saturday, November 19 between new episodes of BTM:Remastered at 9PM ET/PT and That Metal Show at 11PM ET/PT.
That Metal Show: Season Nine premieres Friday, November 11 at 11PM ET/PT. The boys are back and there’s gonna be some trouble! Eddie Trunk, Don Jamison and Jim Florentine are back in LA and bringing the heat with season nine of That Metal Show. An all-star lineup of iconic metal guests grace the stage this season including: Marilyn Manson, Slash, Sully Erna, Jesse James Dupree, Tracii Guns, Brian Johnson, Dave Mustaine and more! Season nine of THAT METAL SHOW will deliver the ever popular “Stump The Trunk” and “TMS TOP 5” segments.
Other shows to be aired that day include The Decline of Western Civilization, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey, and This is Spinal Tap.
Additional concerts, movies and specials focusing on metal will air during the month of November. Visit www.vh1classic.com for a full list of programming.

The Dillinger Escape Plan has posted footage online of the band performing live with Mike Patton, which can be viewed below. The band also issued the following road report:
"Wow this tour is really good. Red Fang are killing it and Mastodon is better than ever. It’s only been a week and a half and we already have had so many tour highlights. Rocking with Patton in San Fran was obviously one of them. Check out this video for a glimpse of that.
"Hanging out with our old friend Jello Biafra was stimulating as usual. We must have sat in our back lounge with our driver Tal for 2 hours at least talking about Wesley Willis. For those of you who don’t know who that is please educate yourself. Before becoming our baby sitter, Tal handled Wesley until his unfortunate death from leukemia in 2003. Jello released all his music on his label Alternative Tentacles. I have his bowling ball. The finger holes are so big I can probably fit my entire hand in one of them but it’s still an honor to possess it.
"It was also great meeting up with the Cavalera boys. We all hope to see Greg’s project with Max surface someday soon. We will surely keep you updated. More...

Chimaira frontman Mark Hunter has issued an update from the road, announcing that Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries will both be leaving the band as well. Their final shows with the band will be at the annual Christmas show in Cleveland, Ohio. Here's the update from Mark:
I would like to start off by thanking our fans for a great tour. This last run was a blast, and truly the most fun we’ve had in a long while. The energy from the audience was exactly what we needed, and a welcoming return. Thank you guys!
Unfortunately, as much fun as we were having, behind the scenes we were aware of some unfortunate realities that prevented us from “living the dream” and having the time of our lives. We had another bomb to drop on the fans.
Early in July we were informed that Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries would be leaving Chimaira at the end of 2011. Of course this was a huge blow, but there were no hard feelings. We understand that life invades art, everything runs its course, and we have to take different paths.
We respect their decision and wish them only the best. We made heavy metal history together and that is all that matters at the end of the day.
Chimaira Christmas 12 will be their last show, and we’ve been preparing to make it one that you’ll never forget.
I would personally like to thank Rob and Matt for all of their hard work, years of service to Chimaira, amazing songs, and for their friendship. Together we built something special that will remain for generations to come. I’m looking forward to spending another 5 weeks on the road with two of the best (and criminally underrated) guitarists in modern metal.
What’s next for Chimaira in 2012? More on that very soon.
Rather than try and make light of unpleasant news, or downplay this by hyping up a new line-up, let’s take a few to honor Rob and Matt.My favorite solo of Rob’s is on The Heart Of It All and my favorite riff of Matt’s is The Dehumanizing Process. I’ll be cranking those today. What about you?
See you in Detroit. - Mark
Ukranian black metal act Neizbezhnost has released a new album titled "Would It Be Reasonable..." and the band is now streaming several tracks from the release online. You can listen to the songs "Tranquility," "Evil Inside," "Alive Corpse," "Do Good!," and "Demon of Television" by heading over to the Neizbezhnost Reverbnation page here.
The band also commented on the album:
"The concept and main idea of the album is to do good, positive things and to follow general human morality like we as a society should be. It seems that in today's world, most people care mostly about themselves and it's everybody out for themselves.
"You can see it on our highways, in the workplace, on television, pretty much everywhere. The message of 'Would It Be Reasonable...' is to care about others, do good, positive things and get back to being moral!"

Wednesday was one of the coldest days we’ve had here in Helsinki this fall, and as people lined up outside to see Wolvserpent and Wolves in the Throne Room; their devotion showed as they patiently queued outside. There was an air of mystery as we filtered into the dark venue, and a feeling of relief when one was able to pass through the doors into the dark blue and amber lit room. Still people kept showing up, and fighting winters approach. Just a few minutes after Wolves in the Throne Room had started, rumors were it had sold out. More...

Aussie technical death metal outfit Psycroptic has announced that its fifth studio album, "The Inherited Repression," will hit stores on February 7th in North America and February 10th in Europe. The upcoming nine-track full-length will mark the band’s second release on Nuclear Blast Records.
Commented Psycroptic guitarist, Joe Haley, “The Inherited Repression is far and away my favorite Psycroptic album thus far - all of us in the band think this. It’s the age-old cliché from bands when they talk about their current album as being the best of their career, blah, blah, but I have to say it because it’s true. We wouldn’t think there is a point of going on if we couldn’t outdo each album prior. We are certainly not playing music for anything else than the love of creating it and performing it.
“The Inherited Repression is quite different from anything we have done in terms of song writing and structure, and we spent a lot longer writing and demoing the songs before we recorded it, which you can tell. It’s a very dynamic album - the fast elements faster, the slow elements slower, and a lot of light and dark binding it together. It’s a very catchy album as well - you can tap your foot, bang your head or anything else you want. Basically it has a lot of groove on it from start to finish.” More...

GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot, who suddenly died on the band's tour bus last week, was about to be a father, according to his obituary. Smoot's wife, Jamie, is pregnant and is due in June 2012, the obituary states.
The moving obituary, posted on the website of Bennett Funeral Homes in Virginia, recalls Cory as "tender-hearted," "generous," and "loyal."
"Cory's identity was not that of 'Flattus Maximus,' a man-made creature created by Gwar. Cory is a real legend that was taken too soon in life and away from his calling as a son, brother, husband, father and musician," the obituary states. "He will always be remembered by those who truly loved him and knew who he genuinely was. He will never be forgotten! Cory's legacy will continue through his only child who will arrive to meet family sometime in June 2012."
A public memorial service is being held Friday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home Chesterfield Chapel, located at 14301 Ashbrook Parkway in Chesterfield, VA.
The family has also set up the Smoot Family Fund. Details on how to give will be forthcoming.

Here are the remaining dates of the tour, which also includes Every Time I Die, Ghoul and Warbeast: More...

American death metal pioneers Possessed have announced that they have been forced to cancel their upcoming show in Bogota, Colombia, which was scheduled for November 12th. A statement from the band reads as follows:
"On an extremely personal level; We (Possessed) have been very much looking forward to playing for you all out in Colombia. We are really disappointed that this is not going to happen the way it was supposed to, since the whole band was really excited to go to Colombia to give you a killer show."
