Scardust: No Longer "Strangers"

As any art or form of entertainment grows, fans will always expect an evolution to take place, whether that be music, film or even professional wrestling. Perhaps then, this is why progressive metal and symphonic metal are two of today's more popular sub-genres, given the fine musicianship and experimentation that comes with both territories. It should come as no surprise then that we're beginning to see more bands fuse the two to create something very special and one of the most promising groups emerging from this crossover genre, is Israel's own, Scardust.

Formed in 2013 under the name Somnia, they changed their moniker to Scardust in 2015 before releasing their acclaimed debut album, "Sands Of Time" two years later. Fronted by the incomparable Noa Gruman, who has previously worked with the likes of Amorphis and Orphaned Land, this quintet look to be on their way to becoming one of Israel's most beloved metal exports. Only two days ago, Scardust unleashed their stunning sophomore album, "Strangers," which already has fans delighted and newcomers won over.

To find out more about the album, I spoke with Noa Gruman, as well as drummer Yoav Weinberg and discovered the fascinating concept of duality that binds the songs together, as well as the pressure they were under to film four music videos in a time of uncertainty and much more. You can check it out below. More...

Phantom Elite To Release New Album In January

Phantom Elite is a metal band fronted by Brazilian singer Marina La Torraca (Exit Eden, live vocalist for Avantasia), which also features songwriting and production from Dutch guitarist and producer Sander Gommans (ex-After Forever). Together with Max van Esch (guitars) and Joeri Warmerdam (drums), they are set to unleash their incredible second album, "Titanium," which sonically is a fresh sounding combination of symphonic, progressive, alternative and heavy metal and will be released on January 22nd through Frontiers.

As for its first single, Marina explains, "'Diamonds and Dark' was one of the first songs we worked on for the album. It was one of those cases where everything just clicked magically and we were wowed by it from the very start. Although it probably has more symphonic touches than the other songs, it is a good showcase of the quality and heaviness level of the whole record. We are really proud of what we have achieved in writing, producing and developing the concept together as a band, as well as the contributions of wonderful professionals like Sander Gommans, Amanda Somerville and Hannes Braun."

Originating in 2014, the seed of Phantom Elite sprang from the HDK project of Sander Gommans. In producing the HDK album "Serenades of the Netherworld," he had brought together a group of young musicians with the intent of performing its songs in a live setting. The natural and passionate chemistry between them sparked a wealth of new and exciting musical ideas and thus Phantom Elite was born. A debut album, "Wasteland" (2018), plus a well received European tour showed that Phantom Elite were ready to take flight.

"With the support of Frontiers and their decades of history in the music business, we are proud to present the release of our second album with them in 2021,” state the band. "Listeners can expect songs where modern meets symphonic and progressive, (very!) heavy riffs meet epic melodies, all overloaded with a wide spectrum of emotions and love for music. This is a high note in our careers!" More...

Kallias Posts New Music Video Online

Progressive instrumental band Kallias, featuring former members of Allegaeon, Eye Ra Haze, and more, have premiered the video for "Black Dream", which can be seen below.

“With 'Black Dream,' we really wanted to transcend different emotions and vibes within the one song and video," the band shares. "It's a bit harder for an instrumental band to do so because there are no lyrics so we have to be selective of how we approach certain sections. The song and video can be interpreted simply as an alien abduction or night terrors that abductees claim to experience. However, we wanted and continue to make music that is open to interpretation to us and our listeners. There are passages in the song that are very aggressive but also more gentle which really signify the feelings and inspirations that we as individuals and as a band have." More...
