Sumerian-themed blackened metallers Melechesh launched "The Epigenesis" last month, which is their latest exploration of occult oriented extreme metal. Front man Ashmedi recently discussed the new album with me, explaining how everything from the lyrics to the guitar riffs to the promo shots are interconnected and chosen specifically to be in alignment. Ashmedi also recently posted a track-by-track breakdown online of the new album, which can be seen at the following links: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Part 4.
Talking about how the songs flow, Ashmedi commented, "It’s not afraid to step out of the box in the sense that every song stands alone, just like a good healthy rock album or metal album." He also discussed the possibility of an upcoming music video and where the band will be touring in support of the new album. More...
Metal has long been defined by a variety of regimented and easily recognizable genres, such as thrash, death, black, etc. Most bands bring in a few outside influences to keep the music fresh and prevent a total adherence to one particular idea, but there is now a rising tide of bands that ditch the idea of a single style altogether. Going by names such as “avant-garde” or “experimental” or “post-any genre you’d like,” they may start with a base that is familiar, but their overall sound is far too fluid to stick to one identifier. Bands such as Peccatum and Unexpect are some of the most well known in the style (“well known” being entirely relative here), but a growing number of underground experimental bands are still out there, waiting to be found by the metal masses. In a statement posted on The Autumn Offering's official Myspace page, vocalist Matt McChesney announced plans for the band to go on an indefinite hiatus and also revealed the possibility of the band breaking up permanently. You can read a portion of the message below:
Due to Tommy leaving the band, as well as a million other things, we have decided to take a long break. Possibly just end it, depending on what happens. We haven't been dropped by our label or anything, we are just burnt out. There is no reason to go on and on with bullshit, we are all friends. All you guys know we love you. Personally, I wish everyone well, in whatever they choose to do. As for myself, I have a new band with Jesse Nunn. We will enter the studio next month with producer Logan Mader to start our new record. It's not going to be a metal band, as I am personally done with metal for awhile. I'm disgusted with the state of it, and I dont want to be a part of it..."

The announcement of the band's split comes just hours after The Autumn Offering parted ways with lead guitarist Tommy Church. Tommy Church had commented on that situation by saying:

I wish all the guys well and to all the fans thanks for your support over the years and hopefully i will see you all sometime in the future! In another interview with Roadrunner Records U.K Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson discussed details surrounding the forthcoming collaboration album with Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. The debut release from the Steven Wilson/Mikael Akerfeldt project, currently titled "Storm Corrosion," is planned for release sometime within 2011.
Steven Wilson commented by saying:
"The funny thing is that the music we're making together is actually nothing like either of us made before. Because I think we both had this idea of this kind of music that we knew we couldn't get our bands to play, but that we both kind of understood where we were coming from. 'Cause we have this kind of passion [for] very experimental, obscure records, almost orchestral in their scope. And we wanted to make a record like that for a long time. It's a long way from metal and it's a long way from anything that, I think, Mikael has ever done, including the 'Damnation' record. I think a lot of people thought, 'Oh, it's gonna be like 'Damnation'.' It's not; it's a long way from that, too. And it's actually a long way from anything I've done; [it's] possibly closer to aspects of things I've done, but really quite distinct from anything I've ever [released]. [It's] very orchestral, lots of strings, lots of guitars and vocals, too. Lots of very long songs that kind of go in different directions that you don't necessarily expect them to go in — almost theatrical in a way. And we both kind of admitted to ourselves that there are a lot of fans out there that are probably gonna hate it. But we're doing it for us. The one thing we didn't wanna do is get together and do a prog-metal supergroup, which would have been so easy to do — and kind of expected, in a way. And, you know, we might do that anyway one day. But this time around, we thought, 'Let's just do this [kind of] record.' Some people will love it and some people will not, and that's OK, because, in a way, I don't think we wanted to just give what was expected, and we're certainly not doing that."

Norway's Leprous has checked in with the following road report:
"We arrived in Groeningen in the middle of the night. We were still sleeping... Thats one of the fun things about nightliners, you go to sleep and wake up in a completely new city. At the first sight, Groeningen Oosterport looked like a high school. But as yesterday, we got a nice backstage with nice catering. Since we are support-act there aren't much to do, before main-act done rigging their stuff and had their sound check.
"So we had plenty of time to check out the town, exercise, write blog, practice, eat fruit etc.
When it was time for out sound check it went smoothly. Luckily we can use Therions mixer, which makes it so easy for us, since we can save our settings from each night. The sound on stage was awesome, we all felt really good, and ready for a good show. More...

Latvian act Dehydrated Goat has issued the following announcement about releasing a full-length album:
"Dehydrated Goat is happy to announce the release of our first studio album 'Genocide Against The Brain Cells!' Recorded in 2009, it finally comes out to our fans and listeners through Russian label Coyote Records and is more than 40 minutes long.
"Dehydrated Goat is based on the collective effort of 5 members. The band has been active since 2006 and hails from Riga, the capital city of Latvia. Dehydrated Goat's material is best classified as mid-tempo grind (not -core, -gore, -metal etc.). The band doesn't try to emphasize brutality or technicality (mimicking a turkey on guitar), and keeps their songs in a somewhat simple manner, so even people that hit the bottle regularly may understand what's going on. Thematic orientation is not kept in strict conceptual margins - themes vary from careless lifestyle and parodies of worldviews, to thoughtful commentary about the ongoing processes in modern Western mind gestalt. Thorough fuck-it-all hilarity mixes with serious revelations.
"The material found in 'GABC' documents just some of the ideas and experiences accumulated by band members in these 4 years of existence, therefore, since the recording of the first album the band has concluded an initial starting phase, allowing the band to accept new challenges and move on - the band has already finished the recording of a second album with the working title 'In The Shadow Of The Cock,' which will be released next year by a currently unannounced label. We've also started to tackle material for the third album. Several songs from the released album may be heard at this location. More...

Norway's The Konsortium has checked in with the following update about mixing and mastering new material:
"Last week we had to make some last minute changes to some previously recorded parts, in addition to adding some more heaviness to parts of the guitars...an unholy blend of Engl-Mesa-Marshall, who can beat that combination?
"So, the album is actually being mixed as we speak, and it will be shipped off to Tom Kvålsvoll and Strype Audio for mastering on the 15th of November. As you might have guessed by now, this means that the album WILL be out before we crumble and die as old men. Some samples will be posted in due time. More guitars, more guitars. And all of them go to 11."

Lizard Skynard sounds like a reject Lynyrd Skynyrd cover band, but behind the gimmicky name and eccentric frontman Erik Sprague, aka The Lizardman, is a legitimate force to be reckoned with. Their sound runs the gamut from blasts of hardcore fury to ambient space rock. Lizardman’s spoken word style has a Henry Rollins flavor to it and helps to make the band stand out from the rest of the pack. With their self-titled debut being released a few weeks back, guitarist Mossy Vaughn spoke to Metalunderground.com in early October about the new album, having a frontman like Lizardman around, and the dangers of vomiting during a live Lizard Skynard show More...

Control the Chaos, who recently took the prize for "Best Teen Band" at the 2010 Vegas Rocks! Magazine Awards show, has signed on to score the soundtrack for an independent horror film entitled "The Back Room" by independent film company 3DT Productions.
Enter Tim Stover, a local indie film director getting ready to release the company’s first feature "The Back Room”- a grindhouse horror film shot in and around Las Vegas, NV. “I wanted to pull together more local talent to put in this movie and given the subject matter, we were intent on assembling a great heavy metal soundtrack for the film,” states Stover.
“The film enters the mind of a serial killer. The rest, we’ll leave to online teaser trailers and the movie’s official release date for Halloween 2010. We’d say more, but we’d have to kill ya...”
“Heavy metal isn’t the soundtrack for relaxation. It’s the score for intensity! And horror and metal music go together like Halloween and candy,” says Ed Fassio, CEO of Itchy Metal Entertainment and manager of the Vegas metal band: Control the Chaos.
“We’re always exploring opportunities to further grow our international presence, both for the band and Itchy Metal,” states Fassio. “When Tim approached us with the idea of having CTC’s music included in the film, we reviewed the project, discussed distribution and came to a licensing agreement (with 3DT) to use their songs for the movie. In addition, the band is preparing to release their new horror-themed single 'Zombie,' so the timing is perfect.”
For initial release, "The Back Room" will be distributed via retail channels by Canadian-based Black Flag Pictures and made digitally available via Netflix Canada.
