Buried for many years, the seminal Norwegian black metal band Emperor will be resurrected from the dead in 2014 to perform a series of festivals.
With those appearances on the horizon, I got in touch with Emperor member and solo artist Ihsahn to discuss the limited activity - he insists it's not a reunion - celebrating the 20th anniversary of "In The Nightside Eclipse."
While black metal fans have that to look forward to, on the more imminent horizon Ihsahn is also due to drop his latest solo effort "Das Seelenbrechen" at the end of the month (reviewed here).
Rather than continuing the sound hear on albums like "AngL" or previous full-length "Eremita," this experimental release instead goes in entirely new directions. During our chat Ihsahn elaborated, "so for many reasons I thought before I continue my solo work with a full-on metal album again, I would have to do a detour and do something from a different mindset and perspective before I continue. The album is not a new direction, it’s a deliberate sidestep before I continue."
Find out more about the creation of "Das Seelenbrechen," Ihsahn's collaboration with Devin Townsend and Serj Tankian for Revolution Harmony, and his appearance on the upcoming God of Atheists album in the full interview below. More...
Swiss outfit Make Me A Donut will release debut LP "Olson" on the 20th of October, 2013. Check out the first single "Psychic Crystallization" in the player below.

With the recent announcement that British death metal band Cancer has decided to reform for a second time, it seemed that the timing was right to grant the request of some of our readers and devote an edition of Sunday Old School to these well loved, if perhaps overlooked Midlands metallers. Cancer was formed, as a number of ideas in Britain are, one night in a local pub, in this case one in Ironbridge, in the county of Shropshire by drummer Carl Stokes, bass player Ian Buchanan and guitarist/vocalist John Walker. They very quickly got to work on material and soon found themselves at the Pits recording studio in Birmingham, where they recorded their first demo, "No Fuckin’ Cover," which was produced by Stevie Young, the nephew of iconic AC/DC guitarist, Angus Young. They played their first gig shortly afterwards in the same city and soon earned a good live reputation which garnered them support slots with such acts as Bolt Thrower and punk legends, G.B.H.
After a second demo and a bootleg live album recorded in Wrexham, Wales entitled, "Bloodbath in the Acid," the group signed a deal with Vinyl Solution, who were impressed with "No Fuckin’ Cover." They returned to Wales, this time to the small Monmouthshire town of Usk, to record their first full length studio album, "To The Gory End," which they finished in only four days before it was sent to the famous Morrisound Studios in Florida to be mixed by Scott Burns, who brought in Obituary vocalist, John Tardy to add backing vocals to the song, "Die, Die." The record was released in the spring of 1990 and Cancer soon found themselves touring with Obituary, as well as their Florida comrades, Deicide. More...
After apparently splitting with the band's vocalist in the middle of a tour last night, White Wizzard has now issued the following statement about the situation and who will be stepping in for vocal duties:
"White Wizzard want to release a brief statement on singer Joseph Michael. Last night in Cardiff Wales, Joseph Michael left a crowd of fans sitting in the venue waiting to see White Wizzard, sat in a pub across the street and refused to perform the show for extremely selfish reasons.
"The band soldiered on with Peter Ellis and Jon Leon handling vocals. It was hugely unprofessional on his part. Due to these actions, we have secured another singer for mainland Europe named Giles Lavery.
"Sadly, due to this any many other problems over the past several months, it is without question we must move on and immediately make a change. Joseph is making very false and erroneous claims on his Facebook site unfortunately about Jon and the band, but without getting into a war of words we will just simply say he is lying and making a desperate attempt to hurt the band and Jon to cover up his very unprofessional actions.
"The rest of us are determined to move on, and we all assure you we are united and everything is fine within the rest of the group. We will do our best to move on. See ya out there! Thanks for all the fans support last night and beyond." More...

Spanish industrial metallers Killus have released a teaser for the first video extracted from their brand new album "Feel The Monster."

Chronos Zero has signed a deal with Bakerteam Records for the release of the band's debut album "A Prelude Into Emptiness – The Tears Path: Chapter Alpha." Bakerteam issued the following statement about the band:
"Formed in 2012 by the meeting of 5 talented and expert musicians, the band was able to deliver an ambitious concept album which recalls the classic progressive records of the eighties and nineties, an album made of beautifully written melodies, top notch musicianship and classy arrangements, in the vein of Dream Theater, Symphony X, Adagio, Meshuggah and Nevermore, with ethnic influences and a cinematographic feeling surrounding the whole work.
"‘A Prelude Into Emptiness – The Tears Path: Chapter Alpha’ was recorded, mixed and mastered by celebrated producer Simone Mularoni (DGM) at Domination Studios in San Marino, Italy. The beautiful artwork was handled by Simone Bertozzi (Mnemic)." More...

Inner Shrine has signed a new deal with Bakerteam Records for the release of upcoming album "Pulsar." The label also comments:
"Formed in Florence, Italy, in 1996, Inner Shrine was one of the first Symphonic bands to emerge from the European metal scene. The band released first full length album 'Nocturnal Rhymes Entangled in Silence' in 1997 and, since then, has been able to develop a strong identity mixing classic heavy metal, doom, classical music and ppera with powerful visuals and a deep lyrical approach.
"Following the critically acclaimed album 'Mediceo' (2010), 'Pulsar' is the band’s ultimate musical statement, an intriguing concept about the end of the world and the creation of a new species. The album has been described as one of the heaviest in the band’s career, with a particular emphasis on the melodic death and Gothic influences."
Thaurorod's new album "Anteinferno" will be released in Europe on December 20th through NoiseArt Records and will be available as CD and download. In Japan, the record is due out December 11 via Spiritual Beast, also featuring an exclusive bonus track called "Japskin Syylä."
Pre-orders for the album are now available right here. Just like was the case with "Upon Haunted Battlefields," the cover artwork for “Anteinferno“ has been taken care of by Ken Kelly of Manowar fame.
Thaurorod's Pasi Tanskanen explains: “I found this masterpiece with all the strong colors of the flames and a warrior on a horse and thought it would fit perfectly, but also would reflect the battle themes and the theme of the last song which is about the world’s biggest horse breed, the Shire horse, which was used in medieval battles ages ago. So I would say it’s a pretty perfect cover for this album!”

Varg will soon be hitting the road with Wolfchant and Nachblut, with dates available after the jump. Noiseart Records also comments:
"Since their founding in 2005, German pagan / viking metal mongers VARG have continuously worked on the perfection of their unique style: the debut Wolfszeit (2007) and the following split EP Schildfront (2008) still boasted black metal influences, whilst Blutaar (2010) and all releases afterwards established ultra-catchy heathen anthems as the main trademark of the wolf pack! Their most recent aural assault Guten Tag (2012) presents the band in finest form that gives the competition a run for their money with hits that defy the genre`s boundaries. The album entered the German album charts at # 25 and brought Varg the well-deserved final breakthrough!
"The best way to indulge in the Guten Tag songs and other classic cuts??? Live on stage of course, with a well-filled drinking horn and hundreds of other fan wolves singing along! Which is why Varg have decided to bring 'blood and fire' to you in October… More...
