Canadian blackened doom metallers Woods of Ypres have recently finished recording their forthcoming new album, "Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light" at Beach Road Studios in Ontario, Canada, with producer Siegfried Meier.
Band front man David Gold took some time to discuss a new era for the band as the group prepares for its first new album since signing to Earache Records:
"W4: 'The Green Album' was the first true Woods of Ypres album, the three before it were prequels, W5: 'Grey Skies & Electric Light' is the sequel and Woods 4.5: 'You Were the Light' was the preview before the sequel. However, unlike the movies, this W5 sequel is the best one yet! Drawing inspiration and influence from some of our favourite albums, the best of the Woods of Ypres sound was created, selected, refined and perfected into our best self-contained, stand-alone songs to date, while still maintaining the flow of an ongoing concept as a WoY album should, however, with less art, less expressionism and more of what you want when you want it.
"W5 is a tighter, more effective Woods of Ypres for a broader audience of listeners young and old, new and loyal. A satisfying 'press play and drive' kind of album drawing the best from old Woods, current Woods and the Woods yet to come on what will be a milestone album, our sixth in less than 10 years and nearing the 10th anniversary of the founding of the band. We've never sounded better and we'd never been fully satisfied with any recording, until now.
"10 songs, just as much about modern life as death, existence, society, the forest, the city, hurt and love. Story wise, picking up where Woods 4 and 4.5 left off, sound wise evoking the feelings of Woods I: 'Against the Seasons - Cold Winter Songs from the Dead Summer Heat' and Woods III: 'Deepest Roots & Darkest Blues' with modern and futuristic tweaks. There is black metal, there is doom, there are ballads, there is pop, guitar solos, double bass, blasts, techno, dark humour, irony, reality, harmonies, uplifting hope to get you through the moment and crushing, irreversible sadness. I count a total of 7 genres in 10 songs. It's a new Woods of Ypres album and I can't wait wait for you to hear it!"
Danish black metallers Blodarv have contributed two tracks to the “Shadows of Tragedy” compilation CD, which was released this week on Self Mutilation Services. Along with Blodarv, other contributors to the release are Nocturnal Depression, Black Hate, Acedi, and Grimlair. “Shadows of Tragedy” is released in a 500 copies-only limited edition CD, which hit the streets on the 16th September.
The two tracks contributed by Blodarv are both previously unreleased songs written at the same time as the band’s “Civitas Diaboli” album, which was itself released on Self Mutilation Services in 2009. The first track, “Sharpstone Mountain,” is effectively a prelude to the tale recounted in the “Blood Red Rocks” track from “Civitas Diaboli,” while the second track, “I Hulernes Rige” is a melancholy acoustic song, which gives Blodarv’s female backing vocalist Satinae Ma a chance to take the lead on vocals.
Blodarv founder and front man Hugin has only recently been allowed to return to performing, following an accident that resulted in extensive surgery to his jaw. It was also revealed this week that he would be collaborating with Norway’s Elenyx and Sweden’s It (Abruptum) on a new album from NÅE, which is to be recorded partly in Blodarv’s own HammerArt and Studios on the Danish island of Bornholm, and partly in Elenyx’s own recording facilities in Oslo. Commented the front man: “Being out of action so long would have been frustrating if I hadn’t been able to work on writing for the next Blodarv release and record some of the music for it in the studio, as well as drafting out ideas for the NÅE collaboration. All in all, you could say that it’s been quite a productive time out”.
Blodarv is due to support Endstille at The Rock, in Copenhagen on the 26th November, and more information about the band can be found at at this location.
Metallic hardcore act Everything Went Black has signed to Lost Shepherd/Prosthetic Records. The label commented on the band:
"Hailing from the wasteland of St. Louis, Everything Went Black plays a concise, sophisticated brand of fast and heavy aggressive music drawing influence from the likes of The Hope Conspiracy, Black Flag and Entombed, while still maintaining a sound that is very much so their own. Since the band's formation in the spring of 2009, the band self released an EP, a 7" on Hands Up! Records, and a split with Louisville, KY hardcore outfit Rattletooth on St. Louis based label I Hate Punk Rock Records."
The band recorded its debut full-length this summer, which will see a release in early 2012. Check out live footage below of Everything Went Black, supporting Converge and Trap Them earlier this year.

Throwdown has revealed a slew of new details surrounding the band's upcoming "Brawloween" tour happening later this month. The band has announced the following touring lineup which is comprised of both familiar faces as well as some guests:
DAVE PETERS (vocals) (Throwdown 2000 - present)
MARK MITCHELL (bass) (Throwdown 2007 - present)
DAVE NASSIE (guitar) (Bleeding Through / ex-No Use For A Name)
TIM "YOGI" WATTS (drums) (Demon Hunter, ex-The Showdown)
Front man Dave Peters comments, "I can't say I love having a chronically fragmented lineup for Throwdown, but it does leave the door open for cool opportunities like this. I'm VERY happy to be playing these shows with Yogi and Nassie as 'special guests' or whatever you want to call them under the circumstances. They're great guys and equally great musicians. It will be a cool thing for fans of the three bands too, as it's hard to say if or when we'd share a stage in the future. The only drawback is running the risk of them setting the sound bar too high for the next time we play in our backyard."
Throwdown will headline the first annual "Brawloween," a brand new tour event which will stretch across the West Coast with support from Carnifex, First Blood, and Suffokate. Details are as follows:
10/21 - San Diego, CA @ Soma

To me 'Age Of Consent' is the album that I usually refer to as...'the one that got away album' in our career. When it was originally released it was sent out into the World without any promotion or fanfare, much like a soldier, catapulted onto a battlefield, naked and without any weapons. Because of this many people were completely unaware of its existence. Therefore we are absolutely over the moon about being able to present it to you once again. For this re-issue, I have re-mastered all the songs from the original source tapes, and...added several more "Bonus Tracks". Some of the bonus material features brand new compositions, and other tracks are covers that have been re-arranged and in some cases re-written. We hope that you will join us in celebrating our anniversary, and....we hope you will enjoy & play at maximum volume...these Barbaric-Romantic creations...."
