The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal created dozens of fantastic bands, many of whom got lost in the shuffle, leading to them being overlooked and eventually causing their demise. A good example of this would be Marseille, who broke grounds for young British bands during their first run, but were overshadowed by bigger British bands such as Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. However, the band is back now, with a sense of celebrity about them somewhat, owing to guitarist Neil Buchanan’s time as the presenter of the smash hit television show Art Attack, and I had the pleasure to witness them at Riffs Bar in Swindon.
Kicking off the night was local act, Vivaxi. The band possess a quality about them which tends to focus more on their musicianship than on an entertaining performance, with each member looking thoroughly concentrated on their respective instrument, which each member plays with undeniable skill. The songs themselves are drawn out to a degree but contain a catchy quality to them, thus ensuring an enjoyable listening experience. While a good band, their focus on music over performance would make for a more boring tenure were it not for lead singer Chris Hawkins, who brings barrels of energy on stage as well as an impressive voice, mixing the screams of Rob Halford with the American party attitude of David Lee Roth. All in all, a solid performance and a good start to the evening.
New Wave Of British Heavy Metal veterans Tygers Of Pan Tang has announced that they have been forced to cancel their planned performances in November. A message from the band reads as follows:
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, the shows at the Muni Arts Centre in Prontipridd and the Clitheroe Grand have now been cancelled. These were shows the Tygers were supporting Monsters Of British Rock. The cancellations were due to some availability problems of the members of MBR. We are sorry for these cancellations and hope to see you at another show very soon."

Mortiis is set to release the new album "Perfectly Defect" as a free download on October 10th, 2010. "Putting ‘Perfectly Defect’ out as a free download was a decision we made after some consideration," said the band’s namesake Mortiis. "The new model of the music business is important to keep in mind; there's a new mentality out there in terms of how people acquire their music now. For better or worse, music seems to have become a medium a lot of people aren't prepared to pay for in the old fashioned way. So, we paid to record it out of our own pockets 'cos we thought it would be a really cool gift to our fans that have been waiting around for ages for something new to come out."
Mortiis has spent much of the past frew years writing and recording “The Great Deceiver,” the long-awaited follow-up to 2004’s full-length “The Grudge” and the 2007 remix album, “Some Kind of Heroin.” "Perfectly Defect" is the prelude to the “The Great Deceiver” – while the latter is heavier and darker, the former is varied, experimental, and largely instrumental.
"When we were writing and working on ‘The Great Deceiver’, we were coming up with all sorts of inspired stuff, a really varied collection of music," Mortiis explained. "Some of it was far too varied and experimental to be included in such an angry, dark album as ‘The Great Deceiver’ so we created a brand new album that is the introductory element to the more intricate world of ‘The Great Deceiver.’ More...

Steve Lee, the lead vocalist of Swiss hard rock band Gotthard, was tragically killed yesterday after being involved in a motorcycle crash. He was only 47 years old. The singer had flown to the U.S. with some biker friends just this weekend to fulfil a long-cherished dream for which he'd never had the time due to his heavy touring schedule for many years. It was to be two weeks through the States on a Harley-Davidson.
The 21 Swiss bikers started their journey on Sunday on a total of 12 motorcycles. On Tuesday, October 5, about 50 miles from Las Vegas, the group had stopped at the roadside to put on their rain gear as it had started to rain. On the slippery road, the trailer of a passing truck began to skid. The driver attempted evasive action but his trailer clipped five of the motorcycles parked at the roadside; one of them hit Steve Lee. Rescue services attempted resuscitation but efforts were stopped after 20 minutes. At 16:13 local time, Steve Lee was pronounced dead.

Black metal has come a long way over the past two decades. What started out as straightforward blasting and tremolo picking has evolved far beyond the limited scale shown in the early years of the genre. Progressive elements crept in and pushed the genre into a direction most could not have foreseen. A Forest of Stars is one of the modern bands taking the fundamentals of black metal and incorporating psychedelic and folk elements to create lengthy, but stimulating, material.
With their second album, “Opportunistic Thieves of Spring,” pushing the band further away from the traditional black metal sound, things look very bright for the future of the quirky British act. Metalunderground.com recently had the chance to speak to guitarist T.S. Kettleburner about the challenge of long songs, the difference between the first and second album, and the importance of music over visuals in a live setting. More...

"We have been home writing for quite some time now and I’m excited to say that we just made it to Orlando this morning to start work on our next record with with Mark Lewis. I have been a fan of the production work that he has been doing for many years now. I love the ‘hugeness’ of the recordings he does and I felt that is what was missing from our last record. We’re all really excited to be working with Mark on this one. We have been working out a lot of new dynamic ideas for this new record and I know he is the guy to really help us capture all of it. We’ll be doing 12 songs this time, all of which are really a step up from our latest album. I can’t wait to get these songs finished and released for everyone to hear."
