Every week we check in with bands from across the globe to get their favorite stories from metal shows. This week Insomnium guitarist/vocalist Ville Friman shares the following story of kids in a pit going airborne courtesy of an Olympic hammer thrower:
When I was young, there really wasn’t a pit culture at Finnish live shows. However, mosh pits have become more popular among young people within the past few years - and we even get these once in a while. One thing you often notice from the stage is the size, age, and strength differences between different people. At one of our recent shows in Helsinki, a pit broke loose during “The Killjoy.” After awhile, you could see these small kids starting to fly around from the back of the audience. When I took a more careful look, I could see that Finnish Olympic hammer thrower, Olli-Pekka Karjalainen, had come to see our show and was taking part in the pit by pushing around these small teens. Even though everybody was enjoying the show and having fun, I was pretty glad to be on the safe side of the room.
Insomnium is currently working on the follow-up to "One For Sorrow" (reviewed here), with full details on the new album forthcoming. The band has already posted one single from the forthcoming opus.

Beauty in the Suffering, the newly launched electro-metal studio project from producer DieTrich Thrall (Marazene), will release the band's debut single, "The Crazies," on November 5th, 2013.
Two years in the making, "The Crazies" marks the first new material released by DieTrich since Marazene's 2011 cover of the Motley Crue track "Live Wire" and subsequent final single "Welcome to your Holiday."
After spending the majority of 2012 locked away in his personal studio writing, arranging, and programming 40+ songs, DieTrich emerged for several minutes to announce his new project only to dive back into a 15 hour marathon studio session with drummer Chris Emery of American Head Charge. Other announced studio special guests include Aaron "Monty" Montgomery (Trapt), Angel Bartolotta (Dope, Team Cybergeist), Chris Telkes (Nocturne, The Razorblade Dolls), And Provo Provenzano (Skinlab, Rikets).
Provo has also been the engineering force behind the project. Said Provo: "Beauty in the Suffering is one of the most exciting projects I've worked on lately. DieTrich is insanely precise in the studio and has a great vision for where his songs need to be and the diy ability and attitude to get it done right. DieTrich has also brought in some amazing studio musicians to help round out a unique and catchy collection of gritty and electronic based tunes. I can't wait to get these songs out for the world to hear!" More...
Up and coming Baltimore, MD metalcore outfit Sky Came Burning has released a music video for "Remora." The video was directed by Drewsif Stalin and can be viewed below.
"Remora" is cut from the band’s upcoming EP "Vertigo," set for release early next year. The track and video depict a man who has found the love of his life, only to have her cheat on him. He dreams about killing her and having her come back to life as a better person. When he wakes up, she has left him.
To stick with the DIY approach, the band called on real friends and band members to join the video as actors. “My girlfriend was a good sport about pretending to be our guitarist Jeff’s girlfriend,” chuckles Drummer Randall James. “Although we originally planned on using actors, in the end we decided to take matters into our own hands and put our personal stamp on it. All in all, the video came out better than we could have ever imagined.”
Randall continues, “Working with director Drewsif Stalin was great, and he was a great sport about us tearing his house/yard apart. He has great vision and direction and we're looking forward to working more with him in the future. We hope our fans are as excited to see the concept of one of our songs take shape in this video.” More...

The Tongeren Metal Festival artwork, created by Dries Gaerdelen, was inspired by the tale of Ambiorix and highlights the festival's macabre mascot.

Broken Hope is proud to bring you the brand new, gore-tastically horrific music video for "The Flesh Mechanic." Check out the video below.
"The Flesh Mechanic" was directed by Corey Soria (Danzig, Hollywood Undead, etc.) and features gore-laden traditional horror FX by Jamie Grove, who handles make up and creature effects for major motion pictures. Jamie Grove began his career at age 13 and has been working in his craft for 15 years. Jamie's resume includes his work on such films as The Devil's Rejects, Halloween, The Hills Have Eyes 2, Hostel 2, and his current work can be seen in the new Robocop.
"The Flesh Mechanic" also features Dino Cazares of Fear Factory as a special guest actor. Cazares says, “It was a honor to be a part of the Broken Hope video. I had a great time getting bludgeoned in the head with a severed arm then getting my face sliced off with a dull knife.”
Broken Hope's Jeremy Wagner adds, “I'm so excited and happy about ‘The Flesh Mechanic’ video! This is only the 2nd music video we've ever done (the first was ‘Into The Necrosphere’ in 1995), and it truly captures the horror and brutality of the storyline and the music. It was a pleasure working with my friend, Corey Soria. Corey is a brilliant director and he has the best video and camera crew. Moreover, Corey has a genuine passion for horror and death metal, so this collaboration couldn't have been more perfect. Even more amazing is the fact that FX-god--Jamie Grove--stepped in to do ALL the horror/gore FX, but he also stars as the actual 'Flesh Mechanic' character! Jamie Grove brought in a mountain of props, a stellar FX crew, and his evil acting skills to ‘The Flesh Mechanic’ video set, and made our music video look like a million-dollar horror movie! Death metal videos are severely lacking in conveying any real 'horror' element...I think Broken Hope changed that with this video. Traditional horror FX trumps CGI every time. ENJOY this video!” More...
Iron Bonehead Productions has revealed December 2nd as the international release date for the second LP from Iron Dogs, titled "Free and Wild." The track listing and artwork are available below, and the following press release was also issued:
"An iron-studded statement of intent, Free and Wild follows on from last year's cult Cold Bitch debut, also released on vinyl by Iron Bonehead. Here, these Canadian true metal warriors perfect their self-proclaimed 'Total Stratocaster Metal played loud, fast, and raw!' as if nothing happened in heavy metal past 1983.
"In fact, the entirety of Free and Wild could have come at that point when NWOBHM was reaching its apex, hard rock was getting harder, and speed metal was in its very infancy. Any number of the band's stated influences - from Angel Witch to Medieval, from Cirith Ungol to English Dogs, from Heavy Load to Omen - paints a picture of the power contained with Free and Wild, but its Iron Dogs' steadfast commitment to reckless abandon coupled with time-honored metal songcraft that will truly liberate even the most stubborn soul!"

Denver, Colorado's Trve Brewing Company is proud to announce details on the first out of four ales, titled Eastern Candle, which is dedicated to the mythological occult metal act Absu.
In honor of "The Sun Of Tiphareth" album, Trve has created Eastern Candle - a pale wheat beer fermented with brettanomyces in white wine barrels. The ale is a fine equilibrium of wheat and white wine with a slight, fruit-like yeast character. (Fittingly named after the song "Never Blow Out The Eastern Candle"). The three forthcoming beers to be unleashed are as follows:
Tiphareth - Red Ale: This will be a soured beer with a mild strain of brettanomyces fermented in red wine barrels. This fusion will have a nice malty, tart, yet dry balance including red wine adding a background complexity.
Manannán - Brown Ale: The Manannán batch will feature rye in the grain bill, as it will be soured and fermented with a shrouded strain of brettanomyces in whiskey barrels. This will be a more assertive brew with malt character and plenty of obscurity from the yeast while also showcasing the barrel flavors.
Winter Zephyr - Black Ale: A dark wheat and dark rye concoction giving the beer its cryptic color. This ale will highlight a fair amount of oats to retain vast body after the brettanomyces have alchemically fermented in wine barrels. More...
Polish death metal band Deivos has signed a deal with Selfmadegod Records for the upcoming release of a fourth full-length.
The band is currently hard at work writing new material to be recorded early in the new year at Zed Studio (Black River, Rootwater, Frontside), with the album tentatively slated for release in mid-2014. The following press release was issued about Deivos:
"Boasting a technical and cruel style of death metal inspired by some of the best bands of this genre including Morbid Angel, Suffocation and Cryptopsy, Deivos originated in 1997, releasing their first demo, Praised By Generations, in 1999. In 2003, they released the Hostile Blood MCD through Butchery Music, the EP enthusiastically accepted by the underground death community.
"In 2004, the band started to write new material for their first record which was ultimately recorded in January and February 2006 at the famous Hertz Studio (Decapitated, Vader). The record, entitled Emanation From Below, was released in Poland by Empire Records in November 2006. Thanks to Metal Mind Production, in January 2008 the record was subsequently released in Europe and then in the US in 2008.
"At the end of 2008 the band once again entered Hertz studio to record their second album Gospel Of Maggots, the album gaining the attention of American label Unique Leader Records who released it in February 2010. Following lineup changes, the band revisited Hertz Studio in February 2011 to record their third full-length effort, Demiurge of the Void, which was also released by Unique Leader in September 2011."
Triptykon is the occult/avant-garde metal band formed by Hellhammer/Celtic Frost singer Tom Gabriel Warrior.
Warrior is proud to announce the group's second album, "Melana Chasmata," is now set to be released on April 15th in North America. The album's release is a collaboration between the group's own label, Prowling Death Records Ltd., and Century Media Records.

"Melana Chasmata" is evolving to be a vastly varied and strikingly dark and heavy album. The album's title may be translated, approximately, as "black, deep depressions/valleys." More...
On January 17th (January 21st in North America), Season of Mist will release a vinyl split EP by Drudkh and Winterfylleth, entitled "Thousands of Moons Ago / The Gates."
The four-track release will include cover songs recorded by both bands, paying tribute to their early influences. Season of Mist comments:
"The split brings together two of Europe's leading black metal bands for the first time on one LP and represents two genre challenging bands drawing on their own influences and re-imagining songs that are important to them.
"Ukrainian poets Drudkh continue to pay homage to old, talented, but forgotten Slavic bands after 2010’s ‘Slavonic Chronicles,’ their previous cover EP.
"Those of you who don’t own a record player will still be able to listen to those songs, since the EP will also be released digitally. As for the CD format, a new compilation will also hit the stores on January 17th/21st.
"Entitled ‘Eastern Frontier in Flames’, it will include all Drudkh’s tracks from ‘Thousands of Moons Ago,' as well as the ‘Anti-Urban’ and ‘Slavonic Chronicles’ EPs, which have never been available separately on CD so far."

Protest The Hero, which recently posted the full "Volition" album online, has now announced that Arif Mirabdolbaghi will not be touring with the band. Arif comments:
"Riff here. It's with a heavy heart that I'm writing to say I won't be joining PTH on the upcoming North American tour. As you can readily imagine, this is the most challenging decision I've ever made as a part of this wonderful band and I have not done so lightly.
"Over the past several years, I've been working closely with some very talented performers in creating a stage adaptation of a Dostoevsky story entitled The Double. We debuted February 2012 to enthusiastic audiences which, through good fortune and hard work, has led to a new staging of the show at a different theatre as part of their official season. These dates were originally tailored to work around the PTH schedule but (as all of you musicians undoubtedly know) creating an album is a series of missed deadlines and inevitably takes longer than expected. The results left us with two options: wait two months with a finished album for my play to be over, or release the music we're so proud of and bring the show to you as soon as possible. The band, as they say, played on. More...
Solo experimental metal band Enduring Revery has made the recently released deluxe edition of "Earth Floods Red" (reviewed here) available as a "pay what you want" download, including free, via bandcamp. Skull Fist's Jackie Slaughter has checked in with the following announcement about releasing a new album:
"It's what you've always been waiting for! It has new songs. And a different cover. It was recorded at a different studio. It has new guitar solos, and new rhythms. And new bass parts. And new drums. And new lyrics, and different girlish screams. And strange new dead cat vocals."
What the illustruous frontman is trying to say is that Skull Fist didn't bother with experiments, but instead opted once more to deliver timeless heavy metal perfect for every headbanger's party. The band recorded at the Vespa Studios in Toronto, with Slaughter stating: "It's actually owned by the bro who sang in Harem Scarem back in the early 90s! Totally right on. Harry Hess is his name. The album was mixed and mastered by Eric Ratz. We're doing the vocals at Lenz Studios with the same guy that did the last album actually, Dan Tsourounis."
The Canadian jokster explains the near 3-year break in between "Head of the Pack" and "Chasing the Dream" as follows: “Money doesn't grow on trees apparently. We didn't have enough moula when we originally planned to record, so we pushed it back 2 months and then one month later I selfishly decided to break my neck skateboarding which put us out for another 2 months.”
The track listing is as follows:
1. Hour To Live
2. Bad For Good
3. Chasing The Dream
4. Call Of The Wild
5. Sign Of The Warrior

Since that time, Cemetery Lust have been perving out on audiences live throughout the American Northwest, refusing to cease their disgusting death/thrash assault. A band statement simply reads: "Cemetery Lust are extremely excited and proud to raise the fukkin' banner of evil and sign with one of today's strongest forces in heavy metal - Hells Headbangers! Only gruesome death and liver failure will follow..."
