The Skull — the band featuring original Trouble members Eric Wagner and Jeff "Oly" Olson alongside Trouble's longtime bassist Ron Holzner and Sacred Dawn guitarists Michael Carpenter and Lothar Keller — performed at Loaded Hollywood last Saturday, October 19th in Hollywood, California. Fan filmed footage can be seen below (thanks to Arturo Gallegos).
As previously reported, Jeff "Oly" Olson rejoined The Skull last month, explaining in a statement: "I know that I've mentioned that I wouldn't perform Trouble's music anymore unless it's with the other original members, but I've had a change of heart. I want to rock again. Although I have been having a great time playing keys for In-Graved (led by former Pentagram guitarist Victor Griffin), I miss the drums and playing classic Troublesongs. I'm still going to jam with Victor, but there is room for The Skull too."
He added: "In just a few short months, 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary year for Trouble's debut record, 'Psalm 9'. Trouble guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin are having fun with their new record, and I had fun writing some intros for it. It's just that Eric, Ron, and myself want to jam too and celebrate our 30th anniversary as well with a tour and a new record. We've worked just as hard as Bruce and Rick over the years and we feel that we've earned the privilege to celebrate with the fans as well. There is no animosity between the two bands and we intend to keep it that way.
"We are currently writing a debut record, set for release in 2014 and I've already submitted several songs to the guys. Excitement is in the air." More...

U.S. melodic power metal act Screams of Angels has signed with Skol Records. The debut album "Into The Warzone" has been scheduled for release on December 27, 2013. The album is comprised of "a collection of high-energy metal anthems such as its title track, a fast paced homage to Marvel comics 'The Punisher,' the galloping epic 'Cycle Of The Moon' and the snarling metal monster 'Eyes Of The Serpent.'" "Into The Warzone" will be distributed in North and South America via Shadow Kingdom Records. Earlier, on November 15, Skol Records will release album's title track as free download single, which will be available from www.skolrecords.com and www.screamsofangels.net.
Skol Records CEO Bart Gabriel commented: "Skol Records started as a label that would support bands and artists related to Gabriel Management. Some time later we decided to focus on reissues of forgotten and classic Heavy Metal albums from the past, as the truth is all guys from Skol Records crew are dedicated Metal fans, you know, bunch of die hard maniacs in leather, surrounded by piles of vinyl records, who wear old Omen, Mercyful Fate and Agent Steel t-shirts. We didn't plan to sign any current bands. But after we heard Screams of Angels' demo our jaws landed on the floor, and we had no other choice: we knew we have to sign them, or someone else will do it. They are the real deal: great, strong vocals, massive riffs, and first of all good songs. It's all there."
In the midst of an extensive career as drummer for multiple heavy metal legends such as Fifth Angel, Heir Apparent and Nightshade, Jeffrey McCormack was thrown a curveball. It was suggested that he hum some melody lines on demo material that he had been working on with Seattle guitarist Craig Church. It was immediately decided that Jeffrey would become the lead vocalist for the band. Once the material had solidified, they recruited Jeffrey’s longtime friend, Kai Chinn to take over the drum duties, followed by bassist Anthony Rivera, rhythm guitarist Rollie Fisher, and former Heir Apparent bandmate Op Sakiya on keyboards. Dutch symphonic metal act Epica has entered the studio to begin recording the follow up to "Requiem for the Indifferent" (see review here). This all comes after extensive writing, pre-production and the birth of Simone Simons' first child with boyfriend and Kamelot keyboardist Oliver Palotai.
Drummer Ariën van Weesenbeek will begin tracking drums together with producer Joost van de Broek at the Sandlane Recording Facilities in the Netherlands. Guitarist/composer Mark Jansen commented: "We wrote about 18 new tracks for the album which we all will be recording. This puts us in a luxury position since we will be able to choose the best of these tracks for the album! So far the songs contain all known Epica elements, it is a balanced mix between old and new influences. We are extremely happy with all the material and can't wait to put it out there!!"
This new, yet untitled, studio effort will be released by Nuclear Blast in spring next year. A special release show has already been announced to take place in 013, Tilburg (NL) on April 30, 2014.

Hate Eternal drummer Jade Simonetto has left the band to further his education and post-music career. Simonetto states about leaving:
"Being a part of Hate Eternal has been one of the greatest experiences of my life and parting ways is, by far, the most difficult thing I've ever had to do. Erik & JJ are older brothers to me and have always looked out for my best interests. Knowing I wont be touring and jamming with those guys is a hard pill to swallow, but I'm choosing to pursue my education and establish myself career-wise.
"I'll miss the world of diehard metal heads who come out to shows and support this great thing we all love. I wish Erik & JJ all the success in the world personally and professionally and have no doubt that Erik will discover some monster drummer we haven't yet heard of. It's what he does!"
Hate Eternal founder and guitarist/vocalist Erik Rutan comments, "It's been a great road traveled with Jade as a part of the band for six years, two very special albums and many, many tours across the world. Some of the best times and experiences in my life and career have been with Jade in the band. Jade is like a brother to JJ and I, and we are very proud of all we accomplished together as a band . His loyalty, dedication, and commitment to Hate Eternal is something we'll always be very grateful for and Jade will always be family. This has been in discussion for some time now and we all agreed that it was time for this to happen. We wish Jade nothing but the best with his future and thank him for all his hard work and tremendous contributions to Hate Eternal." More...

Legendary Brazilian metal icons Sepultura release their upcoming album “The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart” on October 25th via Nuclear Blast.
In anticipation of this release, Andreas Kisser has provided a track-by-track breakdown of the album. Check it out below.
“Actually the intro is the demo we did just before we went to the studio, with all the songs played at the same time! It’s like you are listening to all the songs that you will hear separately on the album at once. It sounds so great, noisy and powerful and it was a result of an accident that I had on my computer. Each song had its track so when I accidentally played the tracks together they came strong and beautiful so I decided to show the guys and they all liked it!”
Trauma of War:
“This will be the first song on the album and is one of the fastest and most brutal songs we ever did. The performance of our drummer Eloy is fantastic, it gave such an energy to the song that the guitars, bass and vocals had to top that level of brutality, for sure our strongest opener so far. I wrote the lyrics inspired by friends that went to war and came back with some kind of trauma, some kind of disturbance that they have to live with for the rest of their lives.”
"An ironic tribute to the conclave that elected Argentinian Pope Francis I as the successor of Benedict XVI. This track has some Death Metal influences. The lyric tells the story of how the Vatican was created, filled with blood, orgy, murders, corruption, adultery. It’s one of the most evil and perverse lyrics I ever wrote.” More...
Today, Malthusian sets November 22nd as the release date for the band's "MMXIII" debut, to see release via Invictus Productions. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Ireland's Malthusian seeped into creation in 2012 with the purpose of creating dismal, suffocating death metal. Slowly shaping their odes of negative, hallucinogenic, and poisonous black/death/doom, the band are poised to stir unease with the release of their MMXIII demo, which will see release first on cassette and then a CD version later on; a vinyl LP version is potentially in the works.
"Malthusian have managed to create an asphyxiating and dismal gloom with their sound: Resplendent with the horror of the grave and the doom of the earth, the three tracks across MMXIII jar uncomfortably with the stasis that the modern death metal scene appears to languish in due to its retro fixation."
1. Wraith///Plague Spore
2. The Mother's Blade
3. Hallucinogen More...
Parisian outfit Death Mercedes is streaming three tracks off the band's debut full-length "Sans Éclat," which will be released on 12" vinyl this winter via Throatruiner Records and Sieve And Sand Records. Throatruiner comments on the band:
"With members hailing from various backgrounds (Amanda Woodward, Cowards, L'Homme Puma, Ravi), the band plays a brand of passionate hardcore/punk that is difficult to nail down to a specific genre, swinging between crust, screamo and half a dozen other sub-genres to create a very personal sound. 'Sans Éclat' was recorded and mixed by Francis Caste then mastered by Jay Maas from Defeater." More...

Thrall's new album "Aokigahara Jukai" will be available worldwide on October 22nd, 2013. The following press release was issued about the album:
"From Australia’s cold dark island of exile, inspired by Japan’s shadowy secret suicide forest, via the fertile black/thrash scene of Melbourne, Australia, Moribund Cult Records is proud to present 'Aokigahara Jukai,' black metal band Thrall’s third studio album.
"Thrall emerged from Tasmania in 2005, the brainchild of Tom Void, songwriter and illustrator for Thrall, to become one of Australia’s most savage, rocking black metal bands.
"Aokigahara Jukai is a conceptual exploration of the eponymous suicide forest, situated in the foothills of Mt Fuji, Japan. Aokigahara Jukai is rich with history and mythology, and is the site of over 50 suicides a year.
"On Aokigahara Jukai, Thrall successfully articulates misanthropy without hypocrisy. By blending traditional black metal elements, with doom, death metal and crust influences, Thrall creates unique, memorable music. The trajectory of the album takes the listener on an unrelenting furious void-ward journey from the opening track to the final deathlike strains of emptiness. Coupled with the artwork’s aesthetic qualities of smothering detail, Aokigahara Jukai is an immensely compelling document of unrivalled intensity and intent."
The band's vocalist and guitarist Tom states: “The geographical proximity of Aokigahara Jukai to Mount Fuji seemed to eloquently encapsulate the duality of Japan. The sublime and the abject intermingled. National landmark and national skeleton in the closet." More...

Finland's MyGrain has posted the following message online about parting ways with the band's guitarist:
"Today we have sad news: Resistor is leaving MyGrain. The awesome sold out Nosturi show was his last one with us and now the time has come for him to step aside.
"We faced Resi's decision with heavy hearts, but this is of course something that has to be accepted and respected. We have played together for nine years and grown to be a family, so the news was not easy to confront. Although our musical collaboration is now ending, the friendship with Resi will continue forever. He will always be a part of this bunch of monkeys and will be seen on our support group in the future.
"Despite of all the setbacks that have occurred this year, we will go full steam ahead, as Resi already mentioned. We have written a lot of new stuff during the long period of silence before 'Planetary Breathing' was released so the next album is already in the making. We are also lucky and overwhelmingly enthusiastic to welcome the new guitarist Joni Lahdenkauppi to join MyGrain team! Joni replaced Mr. Downhill on our European tour with Insomnium and Before the Dawn and instantly became a dear new member of MyGrain family. He is an extremely talented and musical guitarist so we feel that the sky is the only limit for the upcoming new material. With him we can develop our sound even further. You will meet him soon on the gigs next year but in the meanwhile, you can check his playing here.
"All the best to Resi! The awesome years with you will never be forgotten." More...
