Every week we scour the metalverse to get the best and most memorable mosh pit stories from musicians, and this week we have a tale of all-out war that didn't end well for one show-goer's car.
The antics of Slayer shows are no stranger to the Pit Stories column, and today guitarist Paul Coleman of Connecticut act Graven Image adds the story below to the ever-expanding "Slayer has insane pits" category.
Let us know if you remember this show, and feel free to share your favorite Slayer live memory in the comments section below.
If you want to catch Graven Image live, the band will be opening for Anthrax, Testament, and Death Angel at The Webster in Hartford, Connecticut on October 4th, 2012.
WEST HARTFORD BALLROOM: SLAYER/OVERKILL/MOTORHEAD...Slayer is on and the place goes absolutely into a frenzy man, I mean the pit is going out the door into the parking lot. Never seen anything like it, there were some words exchanged outside and like a 30 on 30 war started right there man.
I remember a Volkswagen got flipped right over on its roof...people drinkin, fightin, fuckin right out in the open...crazy, crazy night! Slayer never stopped playin, the shirt sale booths got trampled, all the merch taken! Just insane!

Seance Records announces October 12th as the worldwide release date for Crowned's "Vacuous Spectral Silence" debut. The following press release was issued about the album:
"A cloaked trinity, Crowned's 'Vacuous Spectral Silence' is Australian black metal created under night’s transcendental veil with intelligence, subtlety, and abundant atmosphere, an austere opus traversing life, death, and infinity.
"A new rising force in the Australian underground creating atmospheric black metal for fans of Burzum, Wolves in the Throne Room, Mayhem, Drudkh, Abigor, Summoning, Midnight Odyssey, and Spire, the silence of ages past is broken by Crowned's spectral choir.
"Their murky veil of atmospheric black metal echoes like the chant of choral ghosts in forgotten crypts, channeling a haunting resonance of the dark ages as creeping shadows enshroud, light scarcely breaking upon the cold stone where a Vacuous Spectral Silence lingers eternally."
The album's artwork can be viewed below, and the track listing is:
2. Journey to the Cross-roads
4. Apocryphal Catacomb
6. Vacuous Spectral Silence More...
Back in August the members of Baroness were in a serious bus crash while on the road, and vocalist John Baizley has now posted a statement online about the incident. You can read the report below, or find photos from the band over at the Baroness website.
On August 15th, just before 11 am, Baroness and our crew were involved in a very bad crash while on tour. The brakes in our bus failed completely, on a notoriously dangerous, incredibly steep (12% grade) hill in Monkton Combe, UK, on our way from a show Bristol to another show in Southampton. Our bus went entirely out of control, and we had no choice other than hitting a perpendicular guardrail going about 50 mph at the bottom of the hill. The guard rail and the 20 or 30 trees we ploughed through snapped like matchsticks as we went fully airborne and fell down more than 30 feet off of a viaduct to the ground below. Half of the band/crew were asleep while we lost our brakes, and a few of us were awake and sitting in the rear lounge. I was up front with our driver, and I bore witness to the entire thing. Once our brakes failed, the bus could do little more than gain momentum and plummet down the hill. There was nothing anyone on the bus could have done during our descent to avoid the crash, and no one, the local residents, the police or any of us can believe we survived the impact.
Most people who have been in accidents understand the pre-trauma sensation of time slowing down. There were almost two minutes during which I knew we were heading for a collision. It felt like two hours. I remember the sound of the air-brakes failing, and the panicked cursing of our driver as we slowly realized how desperate the situation was. I tried as hard as I could to yell and wake everyone up to prepare for impact. I remember the sounds of confusion from behind me as our collective terror rose. I remember seeing the guardrail split, then a cluster of trees smacking against the front windshield. While we were airborne my eyes met with our driver’s. I knew then that we each shared the same look on our face; and I won’t soon forget it. We had spent enough time in the air to appreciate, make peace with and accept a fate we thought inevitable, and we looked at one another with a horribly silent “goodbye” in our eyes.More...

Post-hardcore heroes Inhale Exhale are excited to unleash new track “Carpe Diem,” which is premiering exclusively today with Revolver. The track is the second new song the band is previewing for fans in advance of the October 9th release of its fourth album, "Movement," on Red Cord Records. Stream "Carpe Diem" now at Revolver right here.
“‘Carpe Diem’ is basically about the idea the album is centered on – moving forward and keeping your head up above all the garbage the world throws at you,” says guitarist John LaRussa. “It’s about making the most from any situation. If it’s something positive, rolling with it and remembering the good from it. If it’s negative, take it and use it to make yourself stronger. We get something out of every experience, and it's up to us what we do with it.”
Following the October 9th release of "Movement," Inhale Exhale returns to Europe for several weeks of tour stops throughout Germany, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, Czech Republic, and the Ukraine. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Self-produced by LaRussa at his own Revelry Recording, Movement is a study in controlled chaos. The volatile, melody-driven anthems carry the weight of seasoned survivors who persevere come what may. It’s easily Inhale Exhale’s most aggressive work to date - a fact only underscored by ferocity of their previous albums. On Movement, they push the envelope on all fronts while staying true to their hearts, their fans and their roots. More...

In support of their upcoming album due out in January 2013 via Code666 records, Belgian melodic black metallers Saille have lined up a few shows with Romanian black metal act Negura Bunget. The first confirmed dates are as follows:
Jan. 19 - Oostende, BEL @ OHK
Jan. 20 - Nijmegen, NLD @ Staddijk
Jan. 21 - Leeuwarden, NLD @ De Gloppe
The artwork for the new Saille CD will be created by Polish digital landscape artist Michal Karcz, who also developed the band's previous artwork. Mastering will be done by Tom Kvålsvoll, who has worked with 1349, Dimmu Borgir, and Keep of Kalessin.
Commented Saille keyboard player Dries Gaerdelen: "When creating our new album, I did research on and was inspired by several ancient destruction rituals. The new songs are therefore darker, faster, more aggressive and create a feeling of unease. The lyrics, written by frontman Dennie Grondelaers, explore the history of those death rites. With the drums being recorded a while ago, we’ve all got a 'recording state of mind' and have a feeling we're creating more than just songs. We're looking forward to unleashing our creations on the audience, both on CD and live!"
Saille's debut album, "Irreversible Decay", was released in March 2011 via Code666 Records. Footage of the band working on the upcoming new album can be found at this location.
In Alcatraz 1962 will release new album "The Drive" on October 9th, 2012 through Standby Records. The following press release was also issued about the band:
"Northern Virginia is a place like anywhere else, where the stresses of day to day life can both define and destroy the inner workings of so many people's souls. It's the kind of place where the tragedy of the individual's experiences destroys so many people, and yet defines the undying will to grow and thrive for only the strongest of the strong. For those very few people, their triumph over tragedy comes when they discover that they have The Drive.
"Formed in 2005, In Alcatraz 1962 is a band whose determination to succeed has never been questioned. Their blistering sound is regularly compared to 'The Ghost Inside on crack,' and yet provides the lyrical focus needed by so many of today's metal fans to find the deep inner determination to succeed. With their debut release on Standby Records, In Alcatraz 1962 has delivered a release in The Drive that will not only pummel fans with intensity and rage, but will prove to so many of today's expendable youth that the ills of their lives can be overcome with hard work and commitment to succeed."
"The Drive is all about overcoming any and all obstacles thrown at you in life," states the band. "The record is dark, but uplifting and inspiring. It hits hard at home. A lot of bands now are awesome on CD and all hyped up online, but when you see them live they can't deliver. We put our everything into our live shows. The audience can really feel, and connect with us. Our sound also separates us from everyone else. We're influenced by a lot of different bands and genres. We incorporate a few different genres into our music, and this allows us to reach a variety of different listeners." More...
Germany's Alpha Tiger recently signed to Century Media, and the band is currently hard at work on new studio album "Beneath The Surface," which is set to be released on January 28th worldwide.
With the album nearly finished, the band comments: "It took us most of June and July to record the album once again under the wings of 'Godi' Hildman in Berlin's Musicflash Studio. Peter Langforth [guitar] had composed the 9 new songs and the intro over the course of the previous 6 months and spent considerable time to put them all on 'tape' over a period of two months prior to entering the studio. To get a little impression about our work in the studio, check out the following studio-video. Mixing and mastering is currently in the final stages. Andreas Hilbert, another sound wizard from Berlin's Musicflash Studio, is about to finish things at the beginning of October."
The album's first single and video, "From Outer Space," will be released on October 26th shortly before the band goes on tour with metal beasts W.A.S.P. in Europe. Christian metalcore band Underoath is formally announcing plans to disband following the band's 15-year career. “It’s sad to say that we feel like it’s time to close this chapter, but we have never seen things more clearly,” says vocalist Spencer Chamberlain. “These have been the best years of my entire life, and I owe that to every single person who ever supported this band along the way. This wasn’t a quick decision by any means. It’s just time for us to move on.”
The Tampa, Florida-based group released seven albums in total – including the Gold-certified mid-2000s releases "They're Only Chasing Safety" and "Define the Great Line" – that collectively yielded Grammy and Dove Award nominations and total sales in excess of 1.3 million units.
Underoath will cap its run with the release of a career retrospective album, "Anthology 1999-2013" this coming November 6th on Solid State Records. With tracks culled from the 1999 debut, "Act of Depression," through 2010’s "Ø (Disambiguation)," the "Anthology 1999-2013" release is an essential collection of songs that celebrates the evolution of the band. The release also gives fans one last chance to hear newly recorded material in the form of new tracks “Sunburnt” and “Unsound,” recorded with longtime producer Matt Goldman. More...

Norway's Beyond The Morninglight has now released the new album "Liberation" and follow-up to the band's debut self-titled release. You can stream or download the entire album entirely free over at the Misantrof Anti-Records website. Misantrof comments:
"Their new album titled 'Liberation' is a milestone. An artistic milestone. The band's creativity really blossomed, crafting this superb concept album, based upon the downfall of a young man in his prime, all through his decadence, until his end, and the dyed black day of his funeral.
"The story is told as seen from the eyes of Runar Funeralheart, singer and lyricist of the band, who really feels all the life, all the air, all landscapes and all the death surrounding him, and can transform all those sensations into little creatures he likes to take care of, like children to feed, watch over and grow up into massive songs, so full of energy, soul and deepest emotions.
"Extremely influenced by those grey winter skies of Norway, with those silent vast lands inspiring loneliness and melancholy, Runar and Andy of Beyond The Morninglight simply reach a deeper, also higher, level of introspectiveness. Their creativity is Norwegian air breathed in and released back out in form of gloomy melodies, endless mellotron driven sensations, dark atmospheres, and such a shrouding feeling never felt before."
The album was produced, mixed, and engineered by Daniel Vrangsinn and Beyond The Morninglight. The track listing is: More...

Few self-released albums or demos get the kind of international industry-wide attention that Maelstrom's "It Was Predestined" enjoyed when it was circulated throughout the underground in 2008-2009. Maelstrom's signing to Los Angeles' Itchy Metal Entertainment (IME) will mark the official digital release of "It Was Predestined" on October 31st. IME President Ed Fassio had this to say about Maelstrom's crosscutting appeal:
"To create anything that appeals across the ages is challenging. Commercially, new styles take time to be accepted and caution must be taken to avoid becoming too trendy. Yet history has proven, nobody can argue with the wide appeal of great music. When first introduced to Maelstrom we put particular focus on production quality, use of original melody and specific evidence that their art could transcend beyond a particular highlight in history," explains Fassio.
"We firmly believe that awesome music is timeless, but that's often demonstrated in mainstream capacities. We feel the same principle can apply in the underground scene and this band is hell bent on proving it. Maelstrom allows new direction for the label and revives fresh possibilities for the genre," concluded Fassio.
"God Is an Automaton," the fourth metallic/digital hybrid from Swiss industrial metal/death wave artists Sybreed, was recently unveiled via Listenable Records. The album is the result of a six month collaboration with Rhys Fulber (Fear Factory, Paradise Lost, Conjure One) for arrangements and mixing. The band recently posted a stream of the song "The Line of Least Resistance" over on its website, along with two other tracks from its repertoire. Visit this location to listen.

September 28 - Madness In Munich
On the second show out of three in Germany we went to the Backstage complex in Munich. Apparently we've been here before, during the long tour with Napalm Death back in 2001. I had gotten this place mixed up with the Feierwerk or possibly Hansa 39 which are two previous venues I've been to in Munich. Imagine my surprise when I woke up in what can only be described as an jungle… The entire complex is surrounded by palm trees and other plants and I had no idea where we were.
The complex has a number of halls in different sizes and we played in the "Club" which is one of the smaller ones, if not the smallest one. I believe there were four different things happening at Backstage at the same time so it felt quite weird. Would there be any people coming to our show?
I spent most of the day in pain. My back was aching badly due to unknown reasons. Maybe a combination of a weird sleeping position and a cold that only struck the back. I was feeling it already in Geneva but in Munich it was really bad. Luckily we had a nice backstage area far away from the stage so I could take it easy and take care of some internet business.More...
