U.S. based power metal act Kamelot has had a run of mixed luck lately. Kamelot has seen some of the band's highest chart positions ever with the new album "Poetry for the Poisoned," but also had to cancel a North American tour due to the health issues of vocalist Roy Khan. After the cancellation of the tour, I spoke with guitarist Thomas Youngblood about the new album and what the band has planned for the future.
Commenting on how the new album advances Kamelot's sound, Thomas said, "I guess you could say, in my opinion, the new record is a bit more progressive and maybe more diverse. It’s another Kamelot album, another step in the direction we want to go in. With this album the direction we wanted to go was a little more progressive and darker. I think we achieved that." He also discussed the band's brief attempt at continuing the ill fated tour with Circus Maximus vocalist Michael Eriksen and working with Elize Ryd of Amaranthe. More...

Earache Records has checked in with the following announcement about signing a record deal with Woods of Ypres:
"Earache Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of the Canadian cult metal act, Woods of Ypres. Formed in 2002, Woods of Ypres have earned critical acclaim for their ever-evolving, envelope-pushing mix of blackened doom metal. Most often compared to bands such as Agalloch and Type O Negative, Woods of Ypres toe a thin line between the catchy, the artistic and the extreme to create an unmistakable signature sound.
"With this signing comes controversy. As many may know, Woods of Ypres had previously announced that they were disbanding so why would Earache sign a defunct act? Truth is, the band never really broke up to begin with. Let front man, David Gold explain his side of things."
David Gold commented: "After 8 long years of pushing forward, recording five albums and going on multiple tours as an independent band, we are very proud to announce that we have finally signed Woods of Ypres to Earache Records. To address the rumors (some that we ran with and some that we started ourselves), Woods of Ypres never actually broke up/disbanded/quit/ended, at all. Allow me to explain. More...

Rob Halford, the lead vocalist of heavy metal icons Judas Priest as well as his own band, Halford, was asked about the recent attention given to homosexual teenagers taking their own lives as a result of homophobic bullying. In the interview with About.com, Halford said:
"I think more than anything, it's a picture of the way life is. You have all this sexting going on, and cyber bullying going on. It's absolutely heartbreaking when people are driven to the point where they are taking their own lives. I'm pleased that talented people like Ellen Degeneres and Neil Patrick Harris are speaking out. They are far more articulate than I am.
"The most imporant thing is to show the love and support that is out there for everybody, whether you're being bullied or not. It's important to look after each other and to nurture each other, especially in your school years. I saw bullying when I was a kid growing up in school. It has always been there. It's a very peculiar thing. It's a shame that it takes horrible tragedies like this to bring the spotlight back on. It has to stay there now. It can't just fizzle out in a couple weeks, like things tend to do in the media.
"Programs need to be installed in schools, or reinforced. Parents need to keep an eye on their kids a little bit more. The social interaction that's available 24 hours a day has to be utilized in a strong, educating, promotional way to let people who are going through those periods of their lives know that there's always somebody you can talk to. Don't feel alone. There's a way we can help each other get through these types of difficulties."

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Jeff Black, keyboardist for the Edmonton, Alberta-based progressive metal band Samandriel, sends in a short pit story:
I'm normally not one to mosh, but I have a memory that I am particularily fond of. When I was in Europe in summer 2008 I attended Bloodstock Open Air in the UK. Lots of folk/pagan metal bands were playing that year, such as Tyr, Moonsorrow, Eluveitie and Alestorm. During particularly bouncy segments, people in the crowd would form rings by swinging their arms over each other’s shoulders or locking elbows with one another. They would then proceed to dance, sway, or perform some sort of bastardized jig around the circle. Someone in the circle would then break out, and bum rush the person directly across from them and the mosh pit would begin. This would presumably happen when the riffs got heavier or someone got bored, whichever came first. I never heard a name for it, but I call it a "dance pit" or "jig pit." I've never seen it done in North America, and I secretly miss them. Easily the most fun I've ever had in a mosh pit.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Norway's Escapetor has issued the following update about recording new material:
"We are slowly making progress in the studio. Just finalized recordings of 3 new songs, which will be announced and presented properly as soon as mixing, mastering, cover-art etc is finalized. Why just 3 songs? This is a pre-release, a teaser, for the upcoming GREAT next release. Which has been a little delayed due to things happening the past 6 months. Like having a new member in the band etc. We are creating new songs, rehearsing and trying to figure out what & where Escapetor will be for the next major release.
"A bit of added truth to the statement about 3 new songs: none of them are really new. One is from back in 2001, from an early Escapetor demo. Another song was actually released on the infamous 'Moments' release Escapetor made back in 2005. This song is haunting us every live-show we do. (Avid fans will by this statement figure out which song it is…) And the 3rd song is from 1969. Yes, a cover-song! It had to happen sooner or later? The mini-release will be presented and made available digitally during the next couple of weeks.
"Being busy in the studio, we haven’t really cared too much about booking gigs etc for the foreseeable future. Hanging out in the studio is just too much darn fun! So, the Emergenza festival/band-battle is basically all we do this fall. We had a blast and made a good show at Emergenza at Checkpoint on October 6th. We made it to the next battle which is Friday November 5th. Be there and support us!"

"Uluun refuses to give in to threats of cancellations in a country where the metal is stigmatized (Request for cancellation of Hellfest) and marginalized: the difficulty of finding acceptable venues, which moreover accept this music, despite a lively scene, no almost completely different 'music awards' (NRJ Music Awards, Victory music...), media (no metal wave radio FM channels and / or music programs, invitations to TV shows, newspapers).
"Despite everything (including a lack of programming on many night concert in Paris) the metal scene of the Place d'Italie brought together 300 people! The groups are the public too, French metal heads deserve better!"
