Each week in Unearthing the Metal Underground we’ll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week we’re going to be taking a look at the young, yet thriving, metal scene in the United Arab Emirates which is probably more commonly known for its immense wealth from oil drilling, and its Islamic culture. While the UAE is made up of seven Emirates, which are basically like states, Dubai is probably the most well known out of all the seven because it hosts the largest building in the World and is thought to be a great holiday destination. Hopefully after you’ve checked out these three bands, you will be putting it at the top of your holiday destinations as well.
Starting with oldest band first, Perversion has been around in the Dubai scene since 2006; playing a very straight up style of perverted death metal in the vein of bands like Dying Fetus and Aborted. Friends and band mates, Mahmud Gecekusu (bass/vocals) and Rhama Al Rhama (guitars) have been the driving force behind the band from the word go. While they were once a four piece, with Mahumd’s younger brother covering lead guitar duties, they were forced to become the only three piece death metal act in the UAE when Ahmet Gecekusu left Dubai for higher education.
Sticking to their guns, Perversion started to accumulate fans, or as they like to call them “perverts,” by playing local gigs, and with the release of their EP “The Origins of Horror” in 2008 people were able to enjoy such deities as “Venomous Semen” and “Dementia of Devourment” in the privacy of their own homes. They are currently working on their debut album “Pillars of the Enlightened”. You can check out songs on their Youtube channel as well as on their MySpace. Here's a video of the band playing "Pillars of the Enlightened":
I recently had the chance to conduct an interview with Byron Davis of New Jersey metal outfit God Forbid. The band was playing a gig at a small bar called Whiskey Tango that I frequented for the better half of a decade. So, before their set at the venue, located in the northeast section of Philadelphia, I was able to pick Byron’s brain a bit.
I’d also like to point out how gracious the guy was when setting this up. I literally e-mailed him about a day and a half before the show to set up the interview. He was quick to reply and quick to solidify details, something I’m not used to. After the interview, he was also kind enough to stand around and shoot the, well you know, with me for a while. It’s a nice change from being rushed doing some interviews to find the singer of this band just relaxed and polite. You can read the full interview after the jump. More...

Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess has won first place in the recent Billboard Music App Awards for his "MorphWiz" synth program. Jordan, along with chief programmer Kevin Chartier won the award in the category of "Best Music Creation App."
Jordan Rudess commented on the award by saying:
"Receiving the Billboard Music Creation App award is incredibly rewarding. It's a direct message from the industry supporting my passion for the entire iPhone and iPad music app movement. Having MorphWiz receive industry acclaim is a strong statement and empowers me to continue my work, not only on my own music apps but with the creative app community in general. I'm finding out from people that what is important to them about MorphWiz is the fact that in addition to being a deep audio-visual music making experience with so many possibilities, it is also an experience that is really fun for anybody interested in playing with sound and visuals. My customers range from toddlers just putting their hands on the surface and hearing and seeing cool things, to the professional musician, who realizes that MorphWiz offers a next generation type musical control for their music making.
"While music apps out there try to mimic existing instruments, we designed MorphWiz from the start to harness modern mobile device technology to create a new musical instrument that is fresh, exciting, and remarkably expressive. It's rewarding for us to be able to offer MorphWiz to iOS products across the board! Whether you are on an Ipod 2nd generation, Iphone 3G, or an iPad, you can still enjoy MorphWiz and get a fantastic musical experience!"

"Greetings fellow slugs and creeps, The Ritual will break the last few month's silence with a live performance at the Live Evil Festival in London, UK, this Saturday the 23rd of October. The line-up is handpicked from Fenriz's 'Band of the Week' blog and consists of great acts such as Obliteration, Ghost and Vulcano.
"Sonic Ritual will open the festival, which is held at The Underworld in Camden. We go on at 14.30, so be there early! Info here. Also, the 'Mother Hearse' 12" is now entirely sold out."
French act Uluun has issued the following brief update about canceling upcoming tour dates:

Not having publicly responded to Madball vocalist Freddy Cricien’s comments to the press regarding his departure, drummer Jay Weinberg wants to set the record straight:
"There has been so much noise on the internet regarding my parting ways with Madball – largely distorted – that I wanted to take the opportunity to set the record straight as I see it. Then, anyone who is interested can make up their own mind.
"Freddy Cricien has most recently inaccurately described my participation in the writing and recording process of Madball’s latest project, 'Empire.'
"Throughout the several months-long writing and rehearsing process held at Madball’s Queens, New York workspace, I was fully engaged in the writing of the music for this album. As important as Freddy’s lyrics would become when the music was finished, he was only present at those pre-recording sessions on two or three occasions.
"The recording went well, evidenced by the final release, and I am proud of my contributions to the music – live and in the studio.
"However, Freddy has grossly mischaracterized my time with the band in the press; yet I have not responded publicly to any Madball statements.
"I agree that Madball will be better served by an individual more attuned to their particular lifestyle and, occasionally, a new band member will grind gears with long-time members over non-musical issues. To each his own.
"But, let me be clear – while I really enjoyed playing the music, I do not subscribe to their choice of habits and lifestyle. This past August while on tour in Europe, disturbing events within the band indicated to me that it was time for me to move on.
"While on tour in Canada in September, I informed Freddy, Mitts, and Hoya of my decision to leave – but not before they had found a replacement.
"The very next morning came Freddy’s press release and claim that he had
"Well, that’s just not the case.
"It is true that everyone is entitled to their own opinions – but not their own facts!
"Timing is everything, and who would disagree that one cannot be fired after having quit –
decisively, amicably and well in advance of Freddy’s harsh and public 'spin' of the facts.
"Bottom line – check out Madball’s new release, 'Empire' – I’m proud of it, Madball should be proud of it, and, I believe that Madball’s fans will love it!"
