Unearthing The Prog Rock Underground

It's been awhile since we cut through all the noise and decided to highlight three unknown bands specifically worth your while in a crowded music scene, and this week we're getting back into the swing of things with a new edition of Unearthing The Metal Underground!

We're returning with another look at progressive bands that meld opposing sub-genres, utilize very old school sounds in new and unique ways, or utterly dominate on the instrumental front. Without further ado, we now introduce you to three prog metal bands you need to hear hailing from locations as diverse as Spain, Chile, and New York City.

A Chilean band that has flown under the radar for far too long, Bauda's latest album "Sporelights" (reviewed here) came to my attention last summer from an unsolicited review request email, which is always a dicey proposition: you might get something awesome, or you might hear some basement recordings that never should have hit the digital airwaves.

Needless to say, "Sporelights" was an unexpected treat. I had no idea what to expect going in, being totally unfamiliar with the band, and I was blown away by the juxtaposition of sounds, flirting with the line between rock and metal.

There's some dark material that plays with shoegaze (but offers a lot wider breadth of sound than you'd usually hear there), along with incredibly emotional offerings that will be right on track for fans of Anathema, all while offering a very distinct sound that is uniquely Bauda.

The entire "Sporelights" album can be heard in the Bandcamp player, and you can follow the latest on Bauda by heading over to Facebook.

Tommy '86 Announces "Transhumanism"

Tommy '86 is a French synthwave musician heavily influenced by the 1980s. After his latest EP, Tommy '86 experimented with distortion to see where it would take him, resulting in “Transhumanism.”

Combining pulsating, distorted leads that spiral and expand over jagged bass lines that cut like a knife – this is equal parts Dan Terminus hyperactivity with Perturbators's slow, crawling meditations upon rising motifs, and coincidentally both of those musicians make guest appearances here.

The story of “Transhumanism” takes place in the year 2332, in a world dominated by machines. The L.V.T.H.N. Project – initially developed for scientific purposes – set out to emulate a human brain. Its progressive A.I. was compiled from the collective digitization of human thought, which allowed it to think and learn by itself. But L.V.T.H.N. soon surpassed mortal intelligence and spiraled out of control. More...

Mordbrand Releasing Split With Gravehill

Doomentia Records has set November 18th as the international release date for a special split LP between Mordbrand and Gravehill. The label comments:

"You really thought that, after three splits and as many singles and albums (plus a compilation of all those random tracks) in ten years, Mordbrand would start to slow things down, didn’t you? You fool! They’re about to once again renew their collaboration with Doomentia, which got kickstarted with the Unmake EP in April 2013, with another slab of their very own crusty-yet-twisted brand of Swedish death metal, but this time sharing the wax with the Gravehill boys from Los Angeles, California.

"Business as usual, then? Nah, no quite. Conceived as stand-alone EPs, each with their own cover artwork and title, each side marks a new step in both bands' (d)evolution. While still raging, Mordbrand's half – dubbed 'In Nighted Waters,' on side B, and featuring spooky T. Ketola artwork – has a newly acquired creepy/subdued vibe, as suggested by the atmospheric layers of keyboards that engulf opener 'Decimation Reigns.' As a special treat to both longtime obscure DM fans and those who acquire this split, they’ve also recorded their own, rearranged version of Bluuurgh's 'Compost Christ' (from their 1990 Suffer Within EP) with former Gravehill frontman Mike Abominator on backing vocals. A Breach Of Silence Reveals Album Details

Powercore metal group A Breach Of Silence has revealed the cover artwork, track listing, and details for third studio album, "Secrets."

The album was produced by Fredrik Nordstrom (Bring Me the Horizon, Arch Enemy, In Flames) and mixed by Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman. It will be released worldwide via Eclipse Records on February 24th, 2017.

“This album was approached differently than the last two albums Freddy and Henrik did for us,” says guitarist Cossie. “They flew down here to meet up with us the day after Christmas of 2015, and over the next twenty days we tracked the entire album here in Australia. Afterwards, they brought the stems back to Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden. Over the next three months, they were consistently sending us various mixes of the album for us to check out. Once the album was done, the staff at Eclipse Records began getting familiar with the material and we started talking about possible singles for the album. By June of 2016, we all had a game plan in place and began shooting videos for the first three singles.”

Confirmed song titles are as follows: "Falling Away," "Ride or Die," "Undefeated," "Secrets," "Nightcrawler," "Fair Weather Friends," "Buzz Killington," "The Revelator," "A Better Place," "Broken," "Shameless" (cover of The Weeknd), "Dethroned," and "Sugar and Spice." More...

Crippled Black Phoenix Streaming "Turn To Stone"

Crippled Black Phoenix just premiered "Turn to Stone," featuring Arvid Jonsson from Greenleaf on vocals and taken from forthcoming album "Bronze." This rocking Joe Walsh cover easily demonstrates the great musical range of the dark progressive U.K. band, who will release "Bronze" on November 4th via Season Of Mist.

Mastermind Justin Greaves comments: "Crippled Black Phoenix has a history of occasionally recording cover versions, usually as extra tracks or for compilation albums. This time, while recording 'Bronze', it occurred to me that our version of the classic Joe Walsh song 'Turn to Stone' was worthy of being part of the actual album.

"The original is such a great song and I think it fits with the Crippled Black Phoenix approach to playing good honest rock music. It got even better as we had the great fortune of having Arvid Jonsson from the band Greenleaf coming to the studio session in Stockholm to do some wicked guest vocals. His voice fits the songs so well! In a break from the norm, we are happy for Season Of Mist to suggest us releasing this track as a preview running up to the release of 'Bronze.'" More...

Felix Martin Releasing New Album

Renowned as an innovator in the world of modern progressive fusion music and guitar design, Berklee alum Felix Martin is back with a 15-track full-length album of brand new music, set to release in February 2017.

Self-produced by Martin and mixed with Jamie King this year, the album will feature compositions that Martin describes as "clean, outside-the-box and inspired by my South American roots."

Martin details the multi-faceted musical style on his new album: "For this album, I challenged myself to write every note original to my own sound and techniques. I tried to create an album that's doesn't sound like a guitar album, but rather like a band playing music that everyone can enjoy - from a metal audience to pop, from jazz to a classical audience - always keeping the technical aspects very present. It took me a year and a half to complete the writing. I spent a lot of time trying out different ideas, I ended up writing about 50 songs, and keeping just 15 for the album."

The currently-untitled album will feature artwork also inspired by Martin's South American roots, set to be revealed soon. He continues, "A significant portion of the album was written in Venezuela, so I wanted to reflect that in the artwork."

Stay tuned for full album details. This November in anticipation of the upcoming release, Martin will headline a full U.S. tour presented by Gear Gods with special guests The Fine Constant. More...

Destrage Releases New Video

"A Means To No End," the fourth full-length album from the Milan, Italy-based Destrage, is due out October 21st via Metal Blade Records.

For a preview of "A Means To No End," a video for the new track, "Don't Stare At The Edge", is now online. Written, edited and directed by Lorenzo Ameri and produced by Camilla Romeo, "Don't Stare At The Edge" can be seen below.

Destrage comments: "'Don't Stare At The Edge' faces the theme of fear, an emotion that paralyzes. Should we want more? Should we be cautious and stay with what we have? 'Maybe I'm trying too hard to keep this much together, when the pile falls apart into pieces, I have no hands to grab them' means that the expression 'less is more' may be true when it is about possessions, but wrong when it is about settling for undesirable, humble conditions like jobs - we refer to that as 'just a means to an end...'

"The fact is, 'less is a bore'. That's why we think that jumping down the cliff, hand in hand with fear, is a good thing. 'Don't stare at the edge, take a good look down', even though heroes tell you to not look down when they come and they think they are saving you." More...

Vicolo Inferno To Release "Stray Ideals"

The new album by Italian hard rockers Vicolo Inferno, called "Stray Ideals," will see the light of the day on November 11th through Logic Il Logic Records.

"Just like in our debut 'Hourglass,' in this new chapter contents and songwriting haven’t just one direction,” says frontman Igor. "I think we have made a firm step toward the achievement of our own identity, or at least our way of interpreting 'Rock' and expressing our music.

"We worked hard and payed more attention to every aspect of its implementation, including the choice of the tracklist, conceived as an escalation of sound for the listener. A large part of the credit goes undoubtedly to the production made by Riccardo 'Paso' Pasini from Studio73, who managed to 'catch us' with excellent solutions, to give the tracks on 'Stray Ideals' the sounds and atmospheres that could intensify our music.

"For the artwork [shown below], we relied on Simone Bertozzi (The Heartwork), asking him for an impact symbolic cover linked to the title track, that could be freely interpreted. Now we are ready to promote our work on and off stage and proud to publish it once again in collaboration with Logic Il Logic guys." More...

Calligram To Unleash "Demimonde"

London-based black metal quintet Calligram will unleash the new album "Demimonde," on November 4th via Cimmerian Shade Recordings.

Calligram blend the punk energy with blistering black metal music to concoct a consistent and powerful sound that lays waste to most others. Calligram is a class act and their latest release is definitely something to sink your teeth into, especially if you like what the black metal genre stands for and moreover its seamless exploration into the punk realm.

The track listing for "Demimonde" is:
