Pit Stories: Germán Pascual Braves The Elements

Tuesday has rolled around again and that means its time for more Pit Stories taken from directly from the musicians who keep the metal world running. Normally the mosh pit is where all the action is at, but sometimes just getting to the venue can be quite the ordeal all on it's own. Today Germán Pascual (Divinefire, ex-Narnia) shares the following story about an "act of God" nearly stopping the band from performing during a Brazilian tour:

After a great gig in Sao Paulo and a decent good night sleep we headed for Curitiba. The trip was estimated 5 to 6 hours, so we would have plenty of time to rest before next show. The weather broadcast was looking good and all of us were in great spirit.

Then it all started to go wrong BANG, a flat tire! Imagine 10 hungry metal heads in 40C = to about 110F degrees in the middle of nowhere. Thank God the chauffeur took hold of the situation together with the roadies. The rest of us started a long walk to the nearest restaurant. Drained in sweat we finally had lunch and later on met up with the others. Still on time we continued our trip south.

After half an hour the traffic started to get crowded. Very slowly but still in motion we noticed that the sky went darker. It started to rain. For all of you who haven't been in a tropical country I must mention that when it rains, IT RAINS! The traffic stops and we don't move for hours. Now we are getting the picture of a wrecked schedule, but still in a hopeful mood. We start to move, slowly, and now we can see what made the traffic jam. The road is totally flushed away, gone, zero, nothing! With heavy heads we almost gave up. But still we were moving forward and we saw cars that crossed to the other side. High up in the mountains with just a tiny string left of the road, we too took the daring and insane decision to move on. Safe on the other side and half way there we were late. Okay, Sound check: no time, a refreshing shower and change of clothes: no way.

Mothership Signs To Ripple Music

Ripple Music has issued the following announcement about inking a deal with Mothership:

"Ripple Music is chuffed to announce the signing of 70's-tinged U.S. hard rock band, Mothership, for a two album deal that will start with the world-wide release of the band’s self-titled debut. Expect to see this raging slab of incendiary hard rock on CD, digital, and never-before released vinyl early in 2013 on Ripple Music.

"Mothership was formed in 2010 by hard-rock loving brothers, Kyle and Kelley Juett, infused by a love of all that is retro-heavy from years of influence under their father John’s record collection. Originally bereft of a drummer, father John learned how to play and filled in for practice and gigs until permanent skin pounder Judge Smith took over the drummer’s throne. Since then, there’s been no looking back. Already one of Texas’s hottest live bands, word of the Mothership’s rock and roll prowess has leaked far across the country and is already gathering steam in Europe. With a sound that satisfies like a steaming hot stew of UFO and Iron Maiden, blended with the southern swagger of Molly Hatchet and ZZ Top, Mothership’s goal from the beginning has been to carry on the tradition of the classic rock style of the '70's, updated and amped up for the modern day. That hard-rocking sound is filled out by the true legend-in-the-making axeman, Kelley Juett, who seamlessly builds upon guitar heroes of the past with his own fiery licks.

"Having already shared the stage with such revered bands as Prong, Red Fang, Lo-Pan, Dixie Witch, Venomous Maximus, and Wo Fat, their 2012 self-released debut was brought to the attention of Ripple Music who instantly knew this was a band to reckon with. One ingestion of their combustible live show at the Metroplex Heavyfest convinced Ripple that a partnership was inevitable After a family dinner of Italian cuisine, beer and whiskey, both Label and band knew they’d found kindred brothers.

"Ripple will re-release Mothership’s debut album on CD and 12” vinyl, including an extremely limited run of 100 multi-colored, splattered 12” with autographed posters. The album also features the production, mastering, and guest guitar contributions of Kent Stump from Texas heavy rock heroes, Wo Fat.

"Texas is famous for its hard rock. Mothership is the next step in that legendary lineage. Get ready to jump aboard the Mothership for an overdose of vintage hard rock!"

Parkway Drive Streaming New Song Online

Parkway Drive has unleashed a brand new track from the soon to be released fourth album "Atlas," which is due out October 30th via Epitaph Records. The new track titled "Old Ghost / New Regrets" can be streamed through the player below.

"The album was written at a time the band was travelling very extensively which had a major effect on the lyrics," says front man Winston McCall. "While there is no overarching theme, the songs resonate with the travels we as a band have made, and the effects they have had. This has lead to some of the harshest, and also some of the most personal lyrical content that we've ever put to music. In every way, this record has been shaped by the experiences that shaped us a people."

McCall continues, "This record means the world to us. Never as a band, and as people, have we put more effort and thought into creating music. There is more of us in this record than anything before. The experiences that it took to create over the years were once in a lifetime. Ten years down the track, this is the Parkway you know, but we've decided to step it up." More...

Opium Warlords Unveils Album Art/Track Listing

Svart Records has announced November 30th as the release date for Opium Warlods' "We Meditate Under the Pussy in the Sky." Featuring ex-Reverend Bizarre mainman Sami Albert Hynninen, "We Meditate Under the Pussy in the Sky" is the band's second album, and first for Svart. The artwork and track listing are available below, and the following press release was also issued:

"After three years of mental purgatory and dwelling in the sewers of the netherworld, Opium Warlords returns to life. We Meditate Under the Pussy in the Sky is a daring and demanding glimpse of one person’s private hell/heaven, but because of its un-belonging quality, it also deals with the layers of human life that we all share: the primal elements that are the same in all of us.

"Instead of being bound to one tradition or context, this music is global in a pure and un-degenerated sense of the word, and is meant to be heard by everyone – beyond all the scenes, groups, and genres – who has sensitivity, courage, and willingness to open up their hearts and souls and to literally gaze at and (to be precise) to become one with extreme light and darkness. It is an invitation to worlds inside the artist, but also the listener himself/herself.

"Phobos and Deimos, Fear and Dread, are the moons of Mars, The God of War. Imagine what kind of cosmic music might vibrate from there to our Earth? Even if not perhaps 'entertainment' per se, it may open up gateways to a different kind of luxuries of leisure, relaxation, and self-consciousness, if you just allow it to access your life."

1. Sxi-Meru
2. Slippy
3. Lament For The Builders Of Khara Khoto
4. This Wind Is A Gift From A Distant Friend
5. Satan Knew My Secret Heart More...

Crest Of Darkness Announces New Album

The first details of the latest album from Norwegian black metal act Crest of Darkness have just been revealed. Crest of Darkness will release a new ten track album titled "In The Presence of Death" on February 11th, 2013 via My Kingdom Music.

According to a press release, the album "promises to be the most complete, extreme and dark album the band has ever recorded." Recently the band also announced the addition of Djevelkult guitarist Jan Fredrik Solheim (aka Dødsherre Xarim).

Jan replaces the outgoing Kjell Arne Hubred, a seven year veteran with the band who was leaving to devote more time to his young family, which, according to frontman Ingar Amlien, was entirely understandable given that the band had plans to increase activity with the upcoming release of the album.

Solheim, he went on to say, has “brought a renewed sense of enthusiasm and purpose to the band, and as far as I’m concerned Crest of Darkness is sounding better and stronger than ever.”

Aside from Amlien on bass and vocals and Solheim on guitars, Crest of Darkness’ current lineup includes Rebo on guitars and Kjetil Hektoen on drums.

Clutch Reveals New Album Title

Maryland rockers Clutch have announced "Earth Rocker" as the title of their new studio album. "Earth Rocker" is scheduled for a worldwide release in March of 2013 on Clutch's label Weathermaker Music.

In conjunction with the album's release, Clutch will embark on the "Earth Rocker" world tour beginning in The United Kingdom in January of 2013. The band has completed tracking "Earth Rocker" with Machine handling all production duties. Machine is currently in the mixing process on the album. Fans can keep up on the progress of the album by visiting the band's new website right here.

Frontman Neil Fallon commented on the the recording process: "Last minute overdubs are fun. Harmonicas, tambourines (yes, we use those), claps, the odd backing vocal. Recording can be monotonous, so those unintended moments can be a lot of fun. It's kind of like kindergarten music class, but with beer. And sometimes the spontaneity of a last ditch idea breathes a lot of life back into a song that we've been beating up for weeks on end. A looming deadline can be a great muse!"

He continues, "It has a lot in common with Blast Tyrant in that Machine's production techniques are really unique. It differs from Blast Tyrant and a lot of other Clutch records in that, overall, the songs are faster and concise." More...

Night In Gales Frontman Quits

Germany's Night In Gales has published a press release on the band's official Facebook page. It includes a statement from longtime frontman Björn Goosses:

“1996-2012. 16 years Night In Gales, during which I have experienced some of the most intense moments as a musician - positive as well as negative ones. Well, Heavy Metal ain't no picnic. I don't wanna miss these memories whatsoever and I'll always be proud of what we have done as a band!

"After four albums, some great and memorable tours, many festivals and numerous shows across all Europe as well as a crazy trip to Japan, there was more or less silence for quite a while. But ten years after 'Necrodynamic' [2001] we didn't only give a sign of life with our fifth record 'Five Scars,' (reviewed here) we rather returned with a bang! Yet this album is my swansong for Night In Gales. Since the release of 'Five Scars' we earned overwhelming response on the album and played some awesome shows. I will gratefully treasure the memory of my very last two shows with Night In Gales, which took place in Romania last weekend - but still time has come for me to close this chapter. With 'Five Scars' things have come full circle for me.

"I want to thank Jens, Tobbe, Frank and Adriano, our former drummer Christian and interim drummer Hartmut as well as all supporters, partners and friends of Night In Gales for pulling their weight on making this band become part of my DNA.

"1996-2012. 16 years Night In Gales. I'll miss you, but it's time to move on. Cheers!" More...

Anders and Per Depart The Haunted

The Haunted has announced the departure of two more members: guitarist Anders Björler and drummer Per Möller Jensen. The latest departures follow vocalist Peter Dolving's exit earlier this year. Here's the statement from Jensen:

It's with deep regret we have to inform you of another two departures from The Haunted; guitarist Anders Björler and drummer Per Möller Jensen. No animosity whatsoever caused these events, nor are there any other feelings than that they will both be dearly missed. We wish them all the best in whatever, and wherever, their future endeavors will take them.

For all you who have any knowledge about the band, and know how to count, you will realize that there are only two band members left; Jonas and myself. We are still committed to the The Haunted. However, in the light of these recent events, we honestly don't know what will happen. We hope for your appreciation of our current situation, and for your patience.

Here's the statement from Anders:

I feel that I have come to the end of the line regarding THE HAUNTED. This is not a sudden or hasty decision. I have been contemplating it for the last couple of years. Peter’s departure earlier this year made me more certain than ever that I had reached my personal goal with THE HAUNTED, and that the time was right to call it quits.

I have enjoyed every bit of the ride. It’s been an overwhelming journey. I would like to thank the other band members especially, our crew through the years, and our fans worldwide for the experience and opportunity. Thank you so much! The memories will be with me forever.

I will of course continue writing music, but where that leads me?, simply too early to say.
