Katatonia has been tearing up stages the world over for twenty years now. They've built a big fanbase in Europe through lots of touring and festival slots, and are working hard to make American metalheads just as loyal, if so many aren't already. Currently touring with Opeth while playing headlining shows on off-dates, I talked with founding member guitarist Anders Nystrom about the 20th Anniversary celebration, getting close to the fans, and a new album. More...
Carnifex posted a demonstration video showing guitarists Cory and Thor playing along to the new single "Dead But Dreaming." The song appears on the forthcoming album "Until I Feel Nothing" which will be released via Victory Records on October 24th, 2011.

Every week we check in with fans and bands to get their mosh pit stories from metal shows. This time around bassist Gredin of French experimental act Hypno5e has shared a story of an ill-timed stage dive.
It was in Chandler, in the south of Chicago, 3 years ago, it was our first American tour with Hypno5e, the gig was going so well that I decided to jump into the crowd, brainless. The thing was that the lights were pretty bad so from the stage I couldn't see a thing. I happened to jump on a fat lady in her fifties, she rolled over and crashed under a table of the bar. I was too excited to notice anything, my comrades on stage were laughing while playing but I didn't understand why...
After the show I was told about all that, the lady s ankle was a little hurt and she was saying she was looking for the one in charge to sue him. Fortunately, the woman was the mother of a good friend of the guy who booked the show (a really good fellow by the way) so she stopped complaining at some point. That's the day I learned that going to court was the American way for having the wealth charges payed back since they didn't have any welfare system.
To hear tracks available for streaming online and find out what's going on with the band, head over to the Hypno5e MySpace music profile. Be sure to check back in again next Tuesday as we share more stories from the mosh pit.

The mixing and mastering was handled by Logan Mader (Devildriver, Gojira, Soulfly).
Commented the band: “The song is about our feelings on what happens in Belgium since we don’t have a government. We’re not taking part of any political colours or else. It’s just a report of what our 11 millions citizens should do."
You can hear the song by heading over to the Closure Bandcamp page at this location.

Featuring members of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, the newly formed Vallenfyre is taking death metal back to the days of old when tape trading was king and flawless productions weren't on the menu. The band's debut full-length offering will be "The Fragile King," an album originally conceived while front man Gregor Mackintosh was writing lyrics after the passing of his father.
I had the chance to speak with Gregor about the album to get his view on the formation of the band, composed of friends who have played together in various groups in the past, and to hear his thoughts on writing and recording the album.
In the full interview below Gregor discusses the way the death metal community handles lyrics about actual deaths instead of over-the-top tales of gore, as well as Vallenfyre's attempts to create a sound that transports the audience back to the early days of death metal. More...

Forbidden guitarist & GuitarWorld.com columnist Steve Smyth has posted the following message on his websites in regards to the recent passing of Steve Jobs:
“I wish to convey my deepest condolences for the loss of Steve Jobs, a visionary and in my opinion, the most forward-thinking genius of our lifetime so far.
“I'll remember him most for his undeniable contributions to the computing world, changes that led me away from being an ordinary PC user to a staunch Apple products user, who is still learning to find the boundaries of seemingly limitless capability that these products serve in my everyday life, from personal to business.
“As a professional musician and music teacher, I use his G4 laptop, MacBook Pro, iPod, or mobile phone every day in my music business on some level, whether it be creating, recording, playing back demos/takes/mixes, or teaching, transcribing, and writing.
“None of the ease, I have come to find - with Mr. Job's wonderful and forward-thinking contributions - could ever be found in any comparable product. Apple was always the first, the innovator in all-areas media in recent times. A feat I hope they are able to continue into the future as well.
“Rest In Peace Mr. Steve Jobs, and know that the very goal you set out to accomplish has been achieved. The world is indeed a better place because of your efforts.”

Director Stobe Harju of the forthcoming Nightwish film "Imaginaerum" announced that filiming in Montreal has concluded. Harju provided the following update on Nightwish's official Facebook page:
"Dear friends of Nightwish and Imaginaerum
"Four years have passed now since the first idea of the film got out and when I thought Nightwish, Tuomas and I were merely crazy dreamers.
"As many of you know, we've already shot the film's principal photography, and only in 18 days. I promise you though, the material says different. The shots we got in that short period of time were priceless and there's no way, you could tell we were in a hurry.
"I have learned a lot since we first began shooting. Everyone has to understand that most feature films, even with great concepts, never get shot. The team, the production staff, me and most of all the band have battled and bled to get the shootings on the way and the job done. That said, you have to be aware that many battles are still to be fought in the editing room, the visual effects, sound mixing, original score and the distribution of this film. Nothing is clear when it comes to filmmaking. However, with this team: our producers and the post production specialists, it's nearly impossible to fail.
"Now, as the editing phase has begun and there's not much more to tell than it is going very well, the scenes look great and that I'm homesick, we're trying to get you as much candy as possible. Here are SOME of the names of our great cast, who all believed into the screenplay and carried out performances I've been never able to witness before.
"Francis X. McCarthy, Quinn Lord, Marianne Farley, Joanna Noyes, Ilkka Villi, Keyanna Fielding, Ron Lea, Victoria Jung, Hélène Robitaille, Stephane Demers, Anette Olzon, Marco Hietala, Tuomas Holopainen, Emppu Vuorinen and Jukka Nevalainen.
"One battle has gone past with a triumph by the greatest team and crew imaginable. You could think we've been lucky but luck never comes to us without hard work, heart and faith. I my self couldn't thank the fantastic Montreal crew enough and you, the fans of Nightwish, for believing into this project. Keep it up. There are still miles to go. The journey to Imaginaerum continues, and for now, I'd like to say thank you for your support.
"Stobe Harju - The Director, Imaginaerum (Montreal, Canada 9th Oct, 2011)"

N.J.’s Ninety-Six is a hardcore band trying to bring a bit of an old-school hand to modern hardcore. Lacking the metallic edge of a lot of today’s hardcore, Ninety-Six uses the influences of bands like Madball and Sick Of It All to craft their sound. They are a young band, having only released two EP’s for free on Bandcamp. They have performed alongside Suicidal Tendencies and Sick Of It All, and have a show with Cro-Mags coming up later in October. I had the chance to speak to guitarist Pat DeFrancisci about how Ninety-Six started and the advantage of using sites like Bandcamp to distribute music. More...

Polish neo-classical power metal band Boguslaw Balcerak's Crylord posted a new music video for the song "Warrior's Moon." The song appears on the band's forthcoming album "Blood of the Prophets," which is scheduled for release through Lion Music on October 14, 2011.
Lion Music posted the following press release on the album:
"Exploding out of Poland comes a new powerhouse of metal. Lion Music are delighted to welcome Boguslaw Balcerak's Crylord to the labels roster.
"Led by the prestigious talents of guitarist Boguslaw Balcerak, 'Blood Of The Prophets' breathes new life into the neo-classical genre with 12 first class songs chock full of big riffs, dynamic rhythms, jaw dropping guitar solos and infectious vocal melodies from 3 of the most acclaimed vocalist in the field - Carsten 'Lizard' Schulz (Evidence One, ex Domain) and neo-classical legends Mark Boals (ex Malmsteen / Ring Of Fire) and Goran Edman (ex Malmsteen / Karmakanic).
"Blood Of The Prophets' powerful music was inspired by the greats of neo-classical guitar and hard rock/heavy/power metal along with the epic qualities of film music. The classical influence of masters like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin can also be heard at times in Boguslaw's delivery; yet the album is proof that it's possible to absorb these influences and not come out as a Malmsteen clone. With an effortless guitar style Boguslaw delivers both passion and power throughout the album providing the perfect backdrop for lyrics inspired by fantasy, mythology, bible, legends, love and feelings all expertly delivered by Schulz, Boals and Edman either individually or collectively."
