6:00am. YOU’VE KNOCKED A SCREW LOOSE, a taunting Protestant voice rattles my inner skull in a booze-muddled echo as I lope across a bed of sharp stones and plunge into the frigid river just this side of bare-assed.
The full immersion drowns that pesky voice mid-sentence. Eyes open under water; I find peaceful seclusion for a few precious, bone-chilling seconds.
Confirming the diagnosis as I breach the surface and hoist myself to my feet, waist-deep, skin already tightening from the abrupt system shock, a guy on the beach mutters something to his friend, shoots me a strange glare – did I somehow manage to insult his mom? – and twirls his finger near his temple. Yep.
Whatever. I reinforce the diagnosis and thrust double horns skyward, hoping to give the appearance of a calculated, decisive, tough, metal-inspired action and not the clumsy result of a dare, drowned brain cells, and a liquid blanket.
In either case, this is Metalcamp, and what happens at Metalcamp… gets reproduced (and photographed) on Metalunderground.com.
In regards to the recent reunion and future of the band, German death metallers Morgoth have issued the following announcement:
"After all the great experiences we made on the 'Cursed Reunion' so far, the time is now come to have a closer look at the past 18 months of Morgoth's comeback, which has successfully re-connected us with many old friends as well as also a lot of new fans...
"Summer Breeze and Brutal Assault marked the last two festival appearances which we had scheduled as part of this long journey through time. This reunion has been an amazing run, truly full of awesome experiences which we will cherish for a very long time. Our songs are about 20 years old by now and even though we had been absent from stages for about 13 of those years, we nevertheless managed to once again set free the raw energy of our classic death metal style in a powerful way.
"Our initial concept was to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 'Cursed' album's release for only one summer season. This now ended up being almost 2 eventful years, if you consider that the reunion's preparation already started around November 2010. During this return, we thankfully also managed to visit several countries where we originally had never managed to play. We are happy and proud for this awesome opportunity!
"After all this recent action, we have now decided to take things slower again to be able to review the reunion on a more personal level and then to be able to gain some distance from things before deciding upon our next steps with the band.
"By playing two final club-shows in Berlin and Essen in early November, we intend to finish off the 'Cursed Reunion' cycle with a personal vibe and a more intimate atmosphere. We are sure it will be a hot and loud farewell, so we are really looking forward to your participation! We are hearing that the pre-sales for these gigs are moving forwards quite quickly, so better hurry up and order your tickets! More...
Guitarist Javier Reyes (Animals As Leaders) has inked a new solo deal with Sumerian Records for his project Mestís, which is an all instrumental effort. Sumerian comments:
"The debut EP, Basal Ganglia, is a five track offering showcasing Reyes' vast musical diversity and features an intriguing variety of instrumentation performed by highly acclaimed musicians. The EP is set for a Nov 27th release and specially priced pre-order bundles will be available in the coming weeks." A teaser trailer for the EP can be found below.
Reyes also states: “Basal Ganglia is an EP that come from several places, and by places, I mean influences. I’ve always wanted to create a style of music that focused on being emotionally exploitive and technically sound, yet simple enough for the average music listener to appreciate. Another influence was using the eight string guitar in a form that is unconventional to the 'trends' or independent of characteristics that are found in music styles/genres that have popularized it. Another and important reason was to create a true form of my own independent voice as an artist. To create music that expressed my personality, upbringing, emotions and musical taste." More...
With Sonar closing, the location of 2013's Maryland DeathFest XI was up in the air. The organizers have finally announced that the fest will be held in the same location as last year, and will be expanded. Maryland DeathFest XI will take place in Baltimore, Maryland on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2013. Tickets go on sale on October 15th at 12 pm (EST). You can read the entire update below:
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

MetalInsider.net had the chance to interview guitarist Anders Nystrom (Katatonia, Bloodbath) in New York City last weekend, and during the chat Anders revealed that Katatonia’s originally planned fall tour with Opeth has been canned, and also confirmed that Bloodbath has found a replacement for Mikael Akerfeldt in Bloodbath. Excerpts from the interview follow.
Metal Insider: Speaking about touring, guitarist Fredrik Akesson let it slip this past summer that Opeth and Katatonia would be touring North America again later this year. Is that still happening?
That was supposed to happen, but Mikael [Akerfeldt, Opeth frontman] actually pulled the plug on that at the last minute. It’s very unfortunate because we have two more days on this tour now. In three days, we were supposed to start that tour, so it’s a bummer really. We were ready to do that.
Metal Insider: Did he give a reason for canning the tour?
I think honestly, Mikael’s burnt. He’s just been touring nonstop, constantly. I think he had to choose his priorities because they’re going out in Europe in a month as well. So that would mean they probably wouldn’t have a gap at all and they decided to pull on this tour, which is unfortunate for us. But things like that happen, it’s out of our control.
Metal Insider On the plus side, at least you guys did get to tour together. It brought a lot of exposure for the band, I’m sure. I remember when we were speaking you were like, “that would be the perfect tour for us” and one year later… More...

It was a little less than a year ago that the world was rocked by the passing of Flattus Maximus, back to the cosmos from whence he came. And since that day fans of GWAR have wondered how the mighty overlords would deal with the void it left within the band. The members of GWAR responded the only way they knew how - by soldiering on and continuing to play as a four piece.
But from the very beginning of that phase, the quest began to find the new Scumdog that was in every way as magnificent as his predecessor. Today the members of GWAR are pleased to inform their legions of followers, and even more so their many enemies, that once again the band is whole, with the proclamation that long lost cousin of Flattus, Pustulus Maximus, has officially joined the band in the position of lead guitarist, and will join with the group on their upcoming "Fate or Chaos" tour.
Pustulus offered his first words to the press with the following, "At this point I have nothing to say to the press, even though I am talking to you. I will let my guitar speak for itself. But let me add that I am bloodsworn to honor the legacy of the great Flattus and indeed the whole Maximus tribe. I didn't come here to fuck around. HAIL FLATTUS!" More...

In the midst of the North American tour with Kamelot, Nightwish announced the mutual split with vocalist Anette Olzon due to "conflict in the direction" of the band. The band will proceed with the rest of the North American tour with ReVamp vocalist Floor Jansen on vocals. The joint announcement reads as follows:
"Another chapter of the NIGHTWISH story has ended today. NIGHTWISH and Anette Olzon have decided to part company, in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved.
"In recent times it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover.
"NIGHTWISH has no intention of cancelling any upcoming shows, and as a result we have decided to bring in a substitute vocalist starting in Seattle 1.10.2012. Her name is Floor Jansen from the Netherlands (ex-AFTER FOREVER, REVAMP), and she has graciously stepped in to help us complete the ”Imaginaerum” world tour.
"We are all strongly committed to this journey, this vehicle of spirit, and we are sure that this will lead to a brighter future for everyone.
"We forever remain excited about the adventures to come, and we are extremely proud of the two beautiful albums and the wonderful shows we shared together.
"NIGHTWISH & Anette Olzon"
A couple of nights ago, Annette Olzon fell ill prior to the show in Denver and was briefly hospitalized. The show proceeded with Kamelot guest vocalists Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) and Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist) filling in.
Anathema is touring in support of the band's latest album "Weather Systems" (reviewed here), and now band member Danny Cavanagh has checked in with the following road report:
"It's been a week since we started the second part of our Weather Systems tour of Europe, and as we all expected, everything has transpired exactly to plan. Thanks to the fact that we were recording live album and DVD on the FIRST show of the tour, it really meant that we had to hit the ground running, and rehearse harder than we ever have before to be able to pull this off. Thanks to our hard work and fantastic road crew, the first show was a great success for us, and the audience, as expected, were truly amazing.
"If I can spend a few minutes here speaking of the amazing job that the road crew did on the night of the Bulgarian show, no matter what words I could use to compliment their work, it would fall short of truly expressing the job they did, or our gratitude. The stage, the lights and the sound were all truly stunning, as indeed was the work of our orchestral composer in England, and the plovdiv symphony orchestra.
"So a huge thank you to Tonto, Ian, Paul, Rob, Pete, Levon, Dave, the string players and to the fans, thank you all for an unforgettable night. Our man in the studio christer is now mixing the music for a 2013 release. More to come…"

Once in awhile, select troubadours of the heavy metal genre burn hot and bright, much like super-massive stars, and die by exploding in spectacular supernovas well before their time. They never quite make it out of the underground into wider fame, but end up touching quite a few projects in their lifetimes and leaving their mark in unique ways. Optimistically continuing with the astronomical metaphor, the stellar winds and supernovae from the explosion seed space with elements for future stars, fittingly paralleling the life and death of these musicians. Few, however, are accomplished audio engineers as well. This week, we commemorate the underground projects of one such engineer and musician, recently deceased: Simon Oberender.
Audio engineers don’t get half as much credit as the musicians they record for making heavy metal sonically live up to the first half of its title, though they’re ultimately responsible for making sure that the music translates to “heavy” on record. Moreover, as time goes by, they’re being asked to perform increasingly difficult tasks, like “give us a 30-part choir, Gregorian chant section, ethnic hand percussion, and a big organ” while also dealing with the traditional metal rhythm section. As an engineer at Sascha Paeth’s famed Gate Studio in Wolfsburg, Germany, Simon tackled the aforementioned tasks and also performed on an impressive amount of projects, including 4 Epica releases, 3 Kamelot releases, 3 Avantasia releases, 2 Edguy releases, Mayan’s debut release, and 2 Rhapsody of Fire releases.
Aside from these main projects, Simon had also worked on other lesser-known projects. The first of the ones we will spotlight this week is his most recent band, Beyond The Bridge.
Beyond The Bridge
Based out of Germany, Beyond The Bridge is a progressive metal band with a bafflingly impressive debut album (reviewed here) centered on a lofty concept summed up in the title, “The Old Man and the Spirit.” The band recently played their third-ever show at the ProgPower USA festival, making their USA debut just two weeks and two nights ago. Not only was Simon double-slinging instruments with the band live, playing two keyboards and electric guitar, but he was also singing in the choir on the album and served as the albums’s mixing and mastering engineer.

Sweden's Valkyrja will begin recording the follow-up to "Contamination" (reviewed here) later this month, and the band has now issued the following statement about the upcoming release:
"It has been over three years since the completion of the second album. Since then, no words have been said concerning audio to follow.
"As always - determined to reach further, ascending higher and descending even deeper.
As always - prepared to announce the discontinuation of Valkyrja if all past deeds could not be exceeded.
"A discontinuation did however not seem to be the action to follow. The silence that has covered the question whether a sequel to 'Contamination' would ever surface or not has been far from present in our hearts, as a work of monstrous proportions has been going on since the second album was named and announced. Three years of overwhelming work whose entity has grown into a sick and twisted piece of violence, now finally ready to be put onto tape.
"The manifestation of the third album will begin during the last days of October, once again delivered by the hands of Tore Stjerna in his Necromorbus Studio.
"These lines are the first, last and only ones to be written concerning the third weapon until we reveal its final form with all relevant information.
"Spread the word..."

Periphery, which is out now with new album "Periphery II," has checked in with the following announcement about Matt Halpern missing upcoming tour dates due to an injury:
"Peripherals! Bad news... Matt had an unfortunate accident yesterday and dislocated his shoulder! He'll be ok, but he wont be able to play for part of our current UK/European tour.
"Luckily, our good drummer friends, Mike Malyan of Monuments and Boris Le Gal of Chimp Spanner will be stepping up to fill Matt's shoes for this run.
"Please send Matt your love, and expect him back behind the kit maybe even as soon as the end of this current tour! Thanks for understanding, and see you at the shows!"
