Power metal: master of epic guitar solos and frequent champion of all that is cheesy. Some love it for the deliciously grandiose high-pitched vocals, and others hate it for the exact same reason. While not all can appreciate the lyrical themes and vocal stylings of the genre, the level of both passion and technical proficiency displayed by the power metal virtuosos can't be denied. There are the obvious big names in the scene like Fates Warning, Blind Guardian, and Jag Panzer, but what’s going on in the underground these days?
Unlike with the hordes of black metal or death metal, there isn’t nearly as large a pool of unknown talent in the power realm. In this case that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as lesser quantity can lead to better quality. For this week’s edition of Unearthing the Metal Underground, we’ll look at three lesser known bands from different corners of the globe that all approach the power metal style from a slightly different angle.
To start our expedition into the power metal underground we’re headed to Finland for a tour-de-force of shredding solos and pounding drums. Tiluland dropped the debut album “Axes of the Universe” last year and put a surprising twist on the style by going completely instrumental. Driven by guitar acrobatics instead of the standard falsetto singing, Tiluland is the band for you if you love the fast and epic instrumentation of the genre but don’t care for the vocal style.
Check out more on Tiluland via Facebook, or listen to two songs from the “Axes of the Universe” album below.
“Tilu of the Kings”
Underkill TV has posted a video interview online with Orange Goblin in which the band discusses its upcoming 2012 plans. Check out the video interview below.
Orange Goblin will also be releasing the new album "A Eulogy For The Damned" in North America on February 14th, 2012 via Candlelight Records.
Finland’s progressive death metal band, Barren Earth, has announced that its highly anticipated sophomore full-length, "The Devil’s Resolve," will hit stores in North America on March 13th via Peaceville Records.
"The Devil’s Resolve," which follows "Curse of the Red River" (reviewed here) will be released on CD and vinyl, with artwork provided by notable US-based artist Paul Romano (Mastodon).
Mixed by Dan Swanö (Opeth/Katatonia) at Unisound, "The Devil’s Resolve" continues with all the trademarks one has come to associate with Barren Earth: brutal riffs, gloomy growls, majestic melodies, as well as acoustic and progressive passages. According to a press release, "This time the band has delved even deeper, taking this sophomore effort to the extremes through musical landscapes encompassing brutal death metal, doomy vocals, trippy 70’s prog lunacy, pastoral passages and even bagpipes." Nile, which is in the process of recording the follow-up to the "Those Whom the Gods Detest" album, has just been confirmed for Germany's Summer Breeze Open Air 2012. The festival organizers commented:
"For years we tried, but it never worked out. Now, just in time for the 15th anniversary of SUMMER BREEZE, Dinkelsbühl will host a master class in Egyptology for the first time ever. NILE are gearing up to shake everything and everyone to the core with their destructive, highly technical death metal whirlwinds. Tons of breaks, a wide backdrop of atmospheric oriental sounds, raging blast beats, ultra heavy slow parts, NILE have been synonimous with all of this for 19 years and six studio albums now.
"Their fifth album ('Ithyphallic') even made it to position 76 of the German album charts, an incredible feat considering the extremism of NILE's music. And the band led by Karl Sanders will show you exactly how extreme they can be when they deliver their show at SUMMER BREEZE! History lessons don't get any more fun and brutal than this!"
Italian power metal band Pandaemonium will release its first LP in seven years, entitled "The Last Prayer." The album is scheduled for release on January 27, 2011 through IceWarrior Records. Th album marks the long awaited follow up to the 2005 release "Return to Reality." Pandaemonium features Skylark drummer Federico Ria.
The track listing for "The Last Prayer" is as follows:
1. Alone In The Dark
2. Two Spirits One Heart
3. Through The Wind
4. Holy Voice
5. Tower Of Fears
6. The White Voice
7. Go Your Own Way
11. Until The End
Germany's Over Your Threshold has issued the following update about splitting with the band's vocalist:
"Unfortunately Leo (git, voc) dropped out of the band. Due to time constraints and personal reasons it’s no longer possible for him to play in the band. They break away from each other with appreciation, great respect and mutual understanding. Leo want’s to thank Over Your Threshold and all the people who supported the band during the last years!
"…But there’s absolutely no reason to be sad! OVER YOUR THRESHOLD still exists and will play live the next time. Currently the band is looking for a new and well-skilled vocalist. If you think you are the one, you should:
- be interested in progressive death metal
- have some experiences in singing (at live shows)
- have a brutal voice
"Immediately send an email to: email@example.com. Stay tuned for some great news soon!" More...

Lunar Path's debut album "Memento Mori" is due to be released on the 1st of February 2012 through Inverse Records.
"Memento Mori" is a concept album about a downward spiral in depression and death, set out to stretch the boundaries of traditional melodic/gothic metal with its dark and brooding atmosphere. This nightmarish journey through hell and back was inspired by arson, mishaps, bad luck as well as the lineup changes the band endured during these past years. These events shaped the band and transformed the album into a dynamic ensemble with warm and cold flashes of traditional metal and darkly progressive stunts, promising to raise eyebrows and make hearts race.
The album guest roster is filled with acclaimed musicians and vocalists such as Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Aborym), Tuomas Saukkonen (Before The Dawn, Black Sun Aeon), JP Leppäluoto (Charon, Northern Kings, Harmaja) and Antti Leskinen (Fatal Sound Project, Chained, Murena). The band commented on its history:
"Lunar Path was formed in late 2006, releasing a few demos and EPs, before starting to work on 'Memento Mori.' The band became victims of arson in early 2010 when a deranged person intentionally set fire to the ground floor of their practice flat while the band was playing, trapping them upstairs. During the attempt to reach safety guitarist and album producer Jonas Eriksson sustained severe damage to his foot, but luckily nobody else was hurt in the fire. The band didn't spend their time crying over spilled milk as a few months later the band toured Scandinavia supporting Deathstars and ex-Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di'Anno; with Eriksson playing the entire tour sitting down with his broken leg in a cast.
"Lead vocalist Janica Lönn has also been working with Black Sun Aeon lately, most notably singing on their newly released and highly acclaimed 'Blacklight Deliverance' album. Aside from Lunar Path's tour plans she will also perform live with BSA at Summer Breeze 2012 and other European festivals next year." More...

"As an unfortunate result, we’ve had to pull out of our debut US tour supporting Machine Head, and our album release date is now June 5th for North America. We apologise to all our stateside fans for this cancellation, we did not want to let you guys down, as this is obviously sudden news. However, we will be including four brand new and exclusive tracks on our US release of City Of Vultures, and we have got many more new and exciting things to announce over the coming weeks. We are in the audition process right now, and we are very much looking onwards and upwards.
"Please say a collective thanks to Joe and Pat for everything they did in Rise, they are great dudes and they will go far in whatever they choose to do next. See you all in March for some mayhem, and thank you for everything."

Alkerdeel will be releasing the new album "Morinde" on February 24th, 2012 and the album is now available for pre-order here. You can also check out a recently posted music video from the album at this location.
The band commented on the release:
"No better way to start off the apocalyptical year 2012 than with the unleashing of ALKERDEEL's second full album 'Morinde' upon this world.
"After a few successful demo's/EP'S, these Belgians are pushing up the ante. It's clear ALKERDEEL has progressed quite a bit since the release of 'Luizig'. Although the familiar elements are still present - raw sludge/doom infused with filthy black metal - the compositions have matured and gained more depth. The lo-fi approach of the previous albums made room for a more thoughtful recording process, making it sound perhaps more accessible but also allows the sound to reveal all its sluggish nuances. But rest assured, ALKERDEEL remains ALKERDEEL: a mean putrid steamroller that takes no prisoners!"

"First and foremost, I want to say how grateful I am for all of the incredible people I have met that have become like family to me. I have decided to step away from SLS. Obliviously, there are many reasons behind this decision, but none that I feel the need to discuss since I would like to leave in good faith. I will always cherish the countless memories, good and bad, and will always be thankful for all of the great experiences that I’ve had with the band. Thank you to all the fans for your generous support and God bless you all. I wish nothing but the best and good luck to the band and their future members.
As of right now, Im still producing and engineering and had a few offers for touirng already so I will be hitting the road soon,Im still looking to join another band full time as well."

Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer of the blood that develops in the lymphatic system. Black Sabbath made the following post on its official Facebook Page:
"With the news that Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi has been diagnosed with the early stages of lymphoma, his bandmates would like everyone to send positive vibes to the guitarist at this time. Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan--the “IRON MAN” of Rock & Roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.
"This comes as Black Sabbath--Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums)--are writing and recording their first album in 33 years in Los Angeles (still set for release this fall) with producer Rick Rubin. They will now go to the UK to continue to work with Tony. Further information will be released as it becomes available."

Amidst circulating rumors of a pending Metallica 3D movie the band has now checked in with the following update, confirming the production of the film.
"Happy New Year!!! As you know, we generally make it a policy not to comment on gossip or rumors, but we also pride ourselves on being first with Metallica news. So, with that said, the more astute of you may have noticed a couple of mentions in trade publications, and most recently in the new issue of Rolling Stone, that a Metallica 3D movie is in the works.
"We’re here to tell you that, yes, there is indeed a 3D project in the very early stages of production! We wish we could tell you more right now, but we don’t have all the finer points nailed down just yet. What we can tell you is that we are planning on being in a theatre near you sometime in 2013.
"Welcome to 2012. We’re pretty psyched about the year ahead."
Defiance, the bay area thrashers that released such albums as "Product of Society" (1989) and "Void Terra Firm" (1990), are disbanding for the second and final time. In 2005, the band reformed and released the comeback album "The Prophecy" in 2009. In a statement on the band's official website, guitarist Jim Adams posted the following statement to the fans:
"End of the Journey:
"Hey All! Jim Adams here,
"I imagine it won't be a surprise to anyone who might read this that Defiance is no longer a band. After coming to the realization that the music industry was falling apart, and without the internal bond that Defiance had in back in their heydays, it was decided (by me) to shut down all activities to avoid being completely financially wiped out.
"Steev and Mark both put it best when they each told me that 'we did what we promised we would do, and that was finish this album for Doug.' [Harrington, who passed away in 2006]
"Having some time to think about what that really means, I have come to agree completely with them. The job is done. Doug is gone, and with him, really...Defiance.
"I have since moved on and joined Severed Fifth www.severedfifth.com and will be releasing a full length album in February 2012 titled 'Liberate'.
"To everyone who supported and followed Defiance over the last 25 years, we would like to thank you. Without the fans, we would have just been 5 knuckleheads destroying our hearing and our livers in some basement in Oakland."
The final line up of Defiance was:
Jim Adams - Guitars
Shawn Bozarth - Guitars
Keven Albert - Vocals
Mike Kaufmann - Bass
Burton Ortega - Drums

"Jason Richardson (Born of Osiris, ex-All Shall Perish) will be filling the position until further notice. Jason is one of the best guitar players around, and with us already being such good friends, he is more than a perfect fit. 2012 is going to be huge for us, so make sure to come out and see the new and improved Chelsea Grin."
