A Legend In Manhattan "Accepts" No Substitutes

It’s was the fall of 1985 when Accept was introduced to me, only the second metal band to Twisted Sister that I was exposed to. “Metal Heart” was an album that captured me like no other, one that became so intertwined into what I declared “true metal” that I knew every single nuance of every single song. “Bound to Fail” became a bit of a theme song and “Teach Us to Survive” was one of the most daring songs of its time. Six months later a label company “rushed” “Russian Roulette” hit the streets and in as much as I read how disappointed the band was with it at the time of its release, it remains one of my favorite albums of all time, an underplayed, near forgotten masterpiece. I can expound upon what Accept has done to improve my life with such brilliant music, but suffice to say they have been in it for 31 of my 46 years and are ingrained in my very own “metal heart.” More...

Ur Arrives To "Hail Death" With Debut EP

A new majestic beast has arisen from the frozen Polish winter: Ur is here to "Hail Death" with a new EP freshly released via Arachnophobia Records. You can pick it up physically or digitally at Bandcamp here.

After covering the group in our first Unearthing The Underground column of 2017, we checked in with band mastermind Gregor for more details on how this new project came together and what went into the creation of Ur, from the band's drink of choice to landing a record deal and working on upcoming material.

xFiruath: I noticed over at Metal-Archives that you are listed as the sole band member, but the press releases about “Hail Death” sort of indicated Ur is a full band and not a solo output. What was the actual lineup for “Hail Death,” and are the members other than Gregor full time or just session warriors?

Gregor: Ur is not my solo project but a band with three members and each of them contributes to the final artistic vision. The rhythm section of the band is formed by Kroll - drummer with whom I play also in Bloodstained - and our longtime friend - Bony, who handles bass. Unfortunately Metal Archives does not always guarantee full information but thanks for paying attention to it - I'll have to take care of this issue and update data.

xFiruath: “Hail Death” is your first official output under the Ur moniker. What prompted the creation of this group, rather than going with any other project you're involved with, and how did the band originally come together? More...

Pillorian Reveals New Album Details

Pillorian was formed in early summer 2016 by Stephen Parker (Maestus, ex-Arkhum), John Haughm (ex-Agalloch), and Trevor Matthews (Uada, ex-Infernus) with the goal to create a unique, sinister, and twisted style of dark/black metal.

Fusing haunting melodies with avantgarde structures, dark folk elements and blackened walls of furious sound; the music of Pillorian is the perfect aural definition of its namesake (of, or relating to, scorn and condemnation).

“Obsidian Arc” was recorded at Witch Ape/Skyway Audio and Sprout City Studios by Tad Doyle and Stephen Parker and it was mixed and mastered at Klangschmiede Studio E by Markus Stock.

In support of this debut album, the official advance album single with exclusive b-side is set to be released February 10th , as 7" vinyl & digital. Pillorian will be touring across Europe to promote the album in April 2017. Their road map includes confirmed appearances at Inferno Festival (Norway), Roadburn (Netherlands), SWR Metalfest (Portugal) and Dark Easter Metal Meeting (Germany) among others.

Sunday Old School: Anti Cimex

Heavy metal and punk have more or less always had an uneasy relationship. There's been taunts and violence from both sides, yet there's always been a level of mutual respect, perhaps moreso in recent years than when the two genres were at their commercial (some might say, cultural) zenith. Many metal bands have cited the likes of the Sex Pistols, Discharge and Bad Brains as an influence, while numerous bands from the punk and hardcore scenes such as Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I. and The Exploited have channeled the metal sound into their own to create crossover thrash and in later cases, grindcore. This week, we'll be taking a look at another legendary punk band who struck a chord with fans of both styles, Anti Cimex.

Anti Cimex were formed in Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city in 1981 and initially consisted of vocalist, Nils "Nillen" Andersson, Joakim "Joker" Pettersson on guitar, drummer Charlie Claeson and bassist, Tomas "Freke" Jonsson, the last of which had also been a member of another notable Swedish punk band, Shitlickers. This lineup would only record one EP together in December of that year entitled, "Anarkist Attack," which wasn't released until 1982. Shortly afterwards, Nillen was sacked from the group and Frecke took over the position of vocalist, with the band bringing in Christian "Cutting" to handle bass, before he was replaced by a bassist known simply as Conrad.
