We've been catching up with bands and fans all over the world to get their best mosh pit stories. This week Dark Empire lead guitarist Matt Moliti shares a pit story of dueling guitarists:
We were playing the Knitting Factory in NYC in 2008. Our former 2nd guitarist, Andrew Atwood, had a reputation for being incredibly animated on stage, and it got to the point where the two of us would try to one up each other, in a friendly competition kind of way. During our song “Eyes of Defiance” there is a lead break featuring some tricky right hand tapping that I thought would look cool if our singer Brian put his hands over my eyes while I did it. I figured that should be a good enough stage move to “beat” whatever Andrew had planned for the evening.
Little did I know what he was about to do though, because next thing I saw, he had jumped INTO the mosh pit while playing his guitar and started rocking out right there with the fans! Well, I wasn’t about to let him upstage me, so I followed suit, jumping into the pit with him, guitar and all, and proceeded to play the rest of the song right there in the pit with the fans thrashing all around us. Maybe that isn’t as uncommon as I think it is, but it was definitely a first for me.
Dark Empire is set to release their new album, "From Refuge to Ruin," on March 27th via Nightmare Records. You can hear a new song from the album on the band's Facebook page.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Ministry mastermind Al Jourgensen has made a career out of bashing the policies of the Bush family. In 1992, he released “Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs,” which contained sound clips of George Herbert Walker Bush’s famous “New World Order” speech. Eight years later, Jourgensen revisited anti-Bush songs on “Houses of the Molé.” This time, a different Bush was in office—George Walker Bush. Even though his policies were similar to his father, there were still differences. These similarities and differences were reflected on the song “NO W,” which showed Jourgensen rearranging the letters in the title of “NWO,” as well as building on a similar musical foundation.
“Rio Grande Blood” (2006) and “The Last Sucker” (2007) featured an album cover depicting G.W. Bush surrounded by various symbols of secret societies such as Masonic pyramids. The latter record portrayed our former president as a David Icke-type shape-shifting reptoid. These three albums were part of a Bush-blasting trilogy. It seems as if Al Jourgensen pens his best material when a Bush is in power. At the end of the Bush era, Al Jourgensen announced that the group’s 2007 record, "Last Sucker" would be Ministry’s swan song. With no Bush in the White House, Jourgensen tapped out of Ministry material. Five years later, the father of industrial metal returns with a new album, “Relapse,” available March 27, 2012.
Mike Scaccia urged Jourgensen to make another Ministry album when the two were recording “Biker’s Welcome! Ladies Drink Free,” Jourgensen’s anticipated country album. Scaccia previously played with Jourgensen on “Psalm 69.” Joining Scaccia on “Relapse” are his Rigor Mortis band mate, Casey Orr, Tony Campos (Static X) and Tommy Victor (Prong). Even though the Democrats are in power, the state of our country and the world has fueled Al Jourgensen with enough material to write one last album.
Al Jourgensen spoke with Metal Underground on the phone about recording the new Ministry album and his Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters debut, as well as touching on his love for tattoos, support of the 99 percent movement and doomsday predictions. More...

This weekend, Portland, Oregon based act From Ashes Rise entered the studio to lay down two vicious new anthems for Southern Lord Recordings. The crushing recording session marks the first time the band recorded in nine years.
Recorded at Audible Alchemy, engineered by Bryan Sours and Steve Lobdell, and mixed at Audiosiege by Sours and the band’s own Brad Boatright, the two tracks — “Rejoice The End” and “Rage of Sanity” — are being finalized for a rabid new 7? set to be let off the chain via Southern Lord in April or May. A final release date, cover art and more will be be locked down in the coming weeks. The following press release was issued about the band's history:
"From Ashes Rise formed in Nashville, Tennessee during the mid 1990s’ American crust punk surge, their infectious downtuned moroseness catching on worldwide almost immediately. Having relocated to Portland, Oregon, the band have unleashed three LPs, a plethora of split releases, EPs and more to date, all amidst waves of heavy underground touring. Last May the band dominated the indoor stage at the annual Maryland Deathfest gathering in Baltimore, and then in November took part the Portland show of Southern Lord’s massive The Power Of The Riff West Coast takeover.
"From Ashes Rise remain one of the most brutally-charged and hauntingly melodic forerunners of the scene."

Mercenary will be heading out for two Russian live shows in March, and the band has also begun writing new material for an upcoming release. Mercenary commented:
"We're happy and proud to kick off 2012 in a great way by announcing our first ever shows in Russia this March! We are psyched about performing in both Moscow and St. Petersburg - and to sample large quantities of the excellent and cheap vodka! Russian Tour Dates:
03/24/2012 - MOSCOW - RELAX CLUB
03/25/2012 - ST.PETERSBURG - ORLANDINA
"Moreover, we have begun to meet up this month to write new material for the follow-up to 'Metamorphosis' from 2011. We feel that this new incarnation of Mercenary got off to a perfect start last year with great response from fans and the press and a lot of great shows, not least two amazing tours with (among others) Symphony X, Nevermore and Dark Tranquillity. We can't wait to write and release the next album and get out on the road again!
"The most perceptive of our fans might have noticed that we have only been joined by drummer Morten Løwe for a few shows in 2011. Morten was unable to commit to our touring schedule, so we had the excellent drummer Peter Mathiesen fill in. As we have a great chemistry with him musically and personally, we have asked him to join the band as a regular member. He has already played more than 50 shows with us and is well integrated in the band, so please give him a warm welcome and buy him a beer the next time we play in your hometown!
"We are one - The Black Brigade!"

Concert footage was filmed on April 10, 2011, in front of over 50,000 fans in Santiago, Chile at the Estadio Nacional during the band's "Round The World In 66 Days" portion of The Final Frontier World Tour.
Bassist Steve Harris commented on the release: "For The Final Frontier Tour, it was really important to me that we filmed in South America as we’re always so overwhelmed by the fans’ reaction when we go to that part of the world and I wanted to reflect that in the filming. After much consideration, we chose the Santiago show as we felt it was one of our best performances of the entire tour and to play at the prestigious Estadio Nacional was a landmark moment for us. For reasons known to our fans, it took a long time before we got to play our first show in Chile, and once we did get to play a show, the response was so phenomenal we just had to keep coming back, and it’s got better and better each time!”

The upcoming 2012 edition of Germany's Summer Breeze festival will be taking place this coming August 16th - 18th. The festival organizers have issued the following announcement about confirming Desaster for the lineup:
"Unbelievable it's already been nine years since the last time DESASTER played SUMMER BREEZE. Well, it looks like there is some catching up to do in Dinkelsbühl in terms of blackened thrash metal, or thrashing black metal, whatever you want to call it.
"Tormentor and company are bringing along their new album 'The Arts Of Destruction', which proves, uncompromisingly as usual, that even after 24 years of existance no fashion or trend has been able to corrupt the ethics of this Koblenz underground institution.
"As always, the four witchmasters are synonimous with metal true and pure. A feast for all denim cutoff and studded leather fetishists! Nice to see that, among all the plastic imitations of our time, there are still a few originals left."
