44 news articles posted on this day.

Unearthing The Completely Unexpected Underground

The ascendancy of Nergal's new dark blues / country project Me And That Man got me thinking about all the utterly unexpected sounds that have come through my speakers in the years I've been writing here.

For every thrash rehash, modern metal copy and paste job, or a slew of utterly identical melodic post-hardcore emo bands, there's always some outfit hanging out just below the surface that no one has ever heard of - but is putting out awe-inspiring sounds.

Today we're going to focus on those groups that go way off the beaten path, offering a very different take on various sub-genres than what you'll hear from the average metal band. You aren't going to read about them on Rolling Stone, but these are the innovators pushing boundaries that deserve to thrive in the metal underground.

Zeal And Ardor

This one-man project creates something that is so incredibly obvious in hindsight but has barely been scratched by the scene as a whole: a collision of old African American spirituals with extreme metal. Reading that description for the first time, it seems like those two forces wouldn't be compatible, but just think about the connotations for a second.

Why did black metal arise in the Scandinavian scene in the first place, and why are the early days of the style so closely associated with church burnings? American slaves persecuted by Christianity have more in common with the pagans of European lore than you might think.

Imagine if those same slaves had access to guitars and decided to take their music in a more extreme direction. I'll let the project's Bandcamp description explain the rest:

Imagine this: Django sacrifices a goat on stage while intimidating slave chants roar and screeching guitar riffs burn in the background. Then the rhythmic chain rattling evoking a satanic summoning makes way for the eerily familiar melodies of Norwegian black metal.

Intrigued? While the album as a whole does have some down points and a lack of focus (a full review is coming), the tracks that stick to this collision of ideas are top-notch. Zeal & Ardor's "Devil Is Fine" is due to officially drop February 24th, 2017.

Tehom Releasing "The Merciless Light"

Blood Harvest Records has set April 21st, 2017 as the international release date for the debut album from Sweden's Tehom, titled "The Merciless Light."

With a lineup whose roots run deep in the Swedish underground for the past 20+ years, Tehom mainlines that combined experience into a beast of blackened death metal as fresh as it is timeless.

With all but a demo prior - also titled "The Merciless Light," but released in 2011 and at half the length and in rawer form - on this full debut album "The Merciless Light," the quartet took time to finesse and fine-tune this sound into one that spans decades without bearing the stench of "retro" tedium. The album is proudly and mercilessly death metal, but blackened in a most barbaric manner.

1. Absorbed Into The Will Of The Gre
2. The Smoldering Vessels
3. Faith From Water
4. Hearth Of Perdition
5. With Patience And Faith

LADLO Productions is proud to announce the signing of Lithuanian post-black metal band Au-Dessus, with a new album due to drop May 19th, 2017. Check out a teaser trailer below. LADLO also comments:

"On the shores of the Baltic sea at the crossroad between worlds, darker than the night, more hostile than the harshest winter, Au-Dessus pushes the post-black metal borders out.

"This new album will blow a freezing wind with atmospheres full of negative waves in order to take the listener to lands unknown, where the elements are either taken from sludge music or from mental torture, re-opens each and every wounds of the soul.

"With an enormous maturity for a second album, you will found nothing more ethereal, nothing more terrifying, because this one is Au-Dessus (above) everything else. And the story has just began. The album's name and artwork, realized by Metastazis, will soon be revealed." More...

Merrimack Signs With Season Of Mist

Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of French black metal cult Merrimack. Regarding this signing, the band comments:

"We are pleased to announce that Merrimack is joining the Season of Mist roster. This is another significant step in our goal to deliver the blackest of metal, without compromising our art. Working with fellow countrymen will ensure a fruitful cooperation, and their unquestionable professionalism can be nothing but a motivation for the band to make this union last long!"

Merrimack was founded by guitarist Perversifier in 1994 with a clear vision to keep the black metal flame burning as an act of aesthetic terrorism – adamantly based in the underground as opposed to any attempts to co-opt or commercialize.

Following the recording of previous album "The Acausal Mass" (2012) at the legendary Necromorbus Studio, Merrimack embarked on a European tour with Norwegian genre icons Mayhem and accepted invitations to prestigious festivals such as Hellfest in their native France, Germany's Party-San Open Air and Summer Breeze and Montreal's Messe des Morts in Canada.

The band is currently preparing to release a next milestone of extreme black metal with a malicious underground spirit later this year. More...

"'Halfway Human' is a super-strength strike against complacency and conformity. One Last Shot Posts "Leather & Fangs" Video

Horror-infused screamo band One Last Shot from Syracuse, NY just debuted the new music video for the single "Leather & Fangs." The video starts with a nostalgic introduction from Steven Smith of Fuse's Steven's Untitled Rock Show and then showcases a performance from the band at the haunted Landmark Theater in NY.

The video was shot by B-horror director Ron Bonk (She Kills, Night of the Strange), with the track's production being handled by Justin Spaulding and Steve Sopchak (Such Gold, Ice Nine Kills). The single comes from upcoming album "The Death of a Poet & All of His Friends," which will be released independently on 3/31.

"The album is a concept album about 5 strangers running from an ambiguous dark force," says vocalist Jeremy Miller. "They find refuge in an isolated chapel in the woods at night that they block themselves in from the evil that surrounds them. The album is about their character development & realization of inevitable death. This song in particular is about the main character, 'The Poet,' and his struggles with life and death in the situation he's been dealt."

The "Poet" character is loosely based off Miller's own struggles with life and death. At age 17, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that has no cure and requires daily medication in order for him to stay alive. More...

Toy Called God Releases New Music Video

Groove metal influenced hard rock act Toy Called God released latest album "Dirt On Your Coffin" earlier last year. Hailing from Brentwood, CA, the quartet has been making a name for itself since 2011 - mixing heavy distortion, infectious hooks, and headbanger riffs.

Last spring, the band released a music video for the single "False Prophet," which was shot and directed by Mike Sloat (Testament, Machine Head, Lynyrd Skynyrd). Today, Toy Called God is following that with a second music video supporting "Dirt On Your Coffin" for the track "Numb In A Bottle." Also directed by Mike Sloat and focusing on the dangers of alcoholism, you can see this new clip below.

Guitarist Patrick Donovan states, "Far too often in our journey, those we love choose to numb themselves to life as opposed living it. Often times those around them want to help their loved ones but don't know how to do that. Sometimes that help comes too late. Live life, love your people, never give up and never go numb." More...

Fit For An Autopsy Releases Music Video

Fit For An Autopsy just debuted a brand new music video for "Heads Will Hang." Directed by Max Moore, this is the first music video the band has released from upcoming new release "The Great Collapse," due out March 17th, 2017 via Entertainment One (eOne) / Good Fight Music in North America and SPV overseas.

Founding guitarist / producer Will Putney comments, "The concept behind the song/video was to set a scenario in America where a normal happy family was placed in a similar extreme situation, in the hope that it creates a certain feeling of empathy for what less fortunate nations are experiencing right now. And to shed some light on just how close we are to the same tragedies hitting our homes.

"People in the United States always seems to form these really strong opinions about war, refugees, and other crisis situations in third world nations without really having the perspective of what's actually happening there. Everyone's guilty of it to some extent; a lot of us live very privileged lives in comparison to other pockets of the world, where the basic comforts like clean water, power, shelter, and safety are not guaranteed." Ignis Gehenna Streaming Full New Album

Australian black metal cult Ignis Gehenna is currently streamikng the entirety of debut album, "Baleful Scarlet Star." Released earlier this month by Seance Records, hear Ignis Gehenna's blazing "Baleful Scarlet Star" in its entirety below.

The seeds of Ignis Gehenna were sewn in 2007 by Erebus Enthroned singer Nihilifer and Archfiend. Based in Australia, Nihilifer crafted the music while Archfiend, from the USA, penned lyrics. These initial works expressed the devilry of youth and a crude demo was recorded, entitled "Ecclesia Diabolus." In 2010, the band produced the EP "Revelations of Sinister Rebirth," released through the Korean label Misanthropic Art. An entrancing-yet-ugly sound pervaded this short work of bloodshed and fanaticism.

In the years of silence since, Nihilifer has continued Ignis Gehenna as a purely solo work, slowly writing music and creating lyrics to reflect experiences, insights, and visions of his idiosyncratic path. The work was finished upon relocating to a remote part of Australia where isolation allowed his creative vision to flourish. Now at the dawn of the new year, when the fires of spring are burning anew down under, the debut album, "Baleful Scarlet Star", has seen release through Seance Records after spending many years behind closed doors, echoing within its composer's mind. Dead Animal Assembly Plant Releases New Video

Dead Animal Assembly Plant just released debut music video “Rise With Me," which can be seen below.

The Sweet Meats Slaughterhouse was founded in 1895 by Wilhelm Schröder. Internationally known for his advances in industrialized butchery; he produced 30% of the meats consumed in the United States. In 1915, tragedy struck the small town he called home; when all the livestock were infected with an unexplained fatal disease.

The ever-resourceful Schröder turned to the only available meat; the townsfolk. After discovering the terrible truth, they enacted their own form of justice. Feeding the once prolific Schröder to his own machines. The Sweet Meats Slaughterhouse remained eerily quiet and vacant; until one night, horrible noises resembling music emanated from the dank hallways.

"Rise with Me" is an intense and deliberate music video highlighting the darker side of the human persona; written to show the effects of media outlets highlighting mass shootings in modern day America. The band comments: More...

The Moth Gatherer To Release New EP

Sweden's sludge/doom metal act The Moth Gatherer will release a new EP titled "The Comfortable Low" on March 31st via Agonia Records. Sound-wise, the EP will be a nod towards the band's debut album, "A Bright Celestial Light" (2013) and a wink towards the hardcore and electronic side. The release will feature guest appearances from Dennis Lyxzén (Refused/INVSN) and Fred Burman (Satan Takes A Holiday).

The band commented: "After 'The Earth Is The Sky' (2015) we felt like we needed to push our limits while not forgetting our roots. Our roots in hardcore and our current interest in electronica made their mark on these two songs, a constant travel through harsh and beautiful soundscapes. The music and lyrics are supposed to feel like painful beauty and to provoke reflection. The themes revolve around an inner search, a way to rise while being pushed down by depression".

The new material was once again recorded with Karl Daniel Lidén behind the console and clothed with artwork prepared by SCG (shown below). "They both feel like an integral part of the The Moth Gatherer" - concluded the band.

"The Comfortable Low" will be available digitally and in limited edition coloured vinyls:
- grey LP (limited to 250 copies)
- grey LP with black & white splatter (limited to 250 copies).

Pre-orders are available at this location.

The track listing is as follows:

1. This Providence of Bones (feat. Dennis Lyxzén)
2. Still Life Slumbers Here (feat. Fred Burman) More...

"I lost my mom to drug addiction. One of the most difficult lessons in life is realizing that you can't always change or save someone. The hardest part is letting go and saying goodbye.
