Malaysia's The Star Online has issued the following report:
It is impossible to get the authorities to ban black metal music even though it deviates from Islamic teachings as the teachings of one religion cannot be imposed on those of other faiths, according to the Islamic Development Department (Jakim).
"Muslims here co-exist with those of different beliefs and it is not right for us to ask the Government to ban black metal music as there are others who listen to it. We have to be sensitive," said director-general Datuk Mustafa Abdul Rahman.
"Other religious leaders would also want their followers to do good and listen to good things.
On Monday, the National Fatwa Council ruled that black metal culture was a deviation from Islamic teachings and those found practising it could be penalised under syariah law.
It said black metal culture was against syariat (Islamic principles) and could turn its followers into murtad (apostates).
Mustafa said black metal music was a source of concern for the department, noting that while it was just a genre of music, the culture often led its followers to worship Satan, rebel, kill and incite hatred.
Jakim, he added, believed that an effective way to deal with those practising the culture would be to educate them on its dangers and counsel them.
"We will have intensive counselling sessions with the followers, who we believe got hooked without fully understanding what it is all about and the consequences," he told a press conference yesterday.
"They are young and easily influenced. If they knew what they would end up doing as followers of the culture, they would not want to be a part of it."
Mustafa added that "several hundred" black metal followers had been arrested over the years and given counselling.
However, he was not aware if those counselled had been rearrested for taking part in black metal activities again.
French metallers SCARVE have posted the following message on their official web site:
"We're currently adding the last bones to the rough skeleton of what will eventually become SCARVE album #4! About eight brutally groovy and savagely fast tracks are nearly complete now, and we have another three of four on the way, so it all looks quite ravishing here in our snowed-in rehearsal space in the Northeast of beautiful France. Dirk [Verbeuren, drums; also in SOILWORK] and Guillaume [Bideau, vocals] will head to Sweden's Dug-Out Studio next week to start tracking the drums with good ole' Daniel Bergstrand [MESHUGGAH, IN FLAMES, STUCK MOJO] at the helm. In the meantime, sassy dude Mattias Nilsson will help Sylvain [Coudret, lead guitar], Patrick [Martin, rhythm guitar] and Loïc [Colin, bass] to fine-tune the guitar and bass sounds which we're tracking at home this time. Vocals and mixing duties will be handled by Daniel sometime in June. Until then, we'll do our best to keep you posted right here with diaries, studio pictures, videos of us naked and other fun stuff!"
SCARVE's follow-up to 2004's "Irradiant" is tentatively later this fall via Listenable Records.
SCARVE's Dirk Verbeuren recently joined SOILWORK as a full-fledged member after having laid down the drum tracks for the group's latest album, "Stabbing the Drama", and touring with the group for the past couple of years.
Norwegian black metallers GORGOROTH have posted the following update on their official web site:
"Gaahl has now entered the studio in Bergen to record vocals for GORGOROTH's upcoming album, 'Ad Majorem Satanhas Gloriam'. The release date of the album is not decided yet, but it is expected to be released within few months.
"In other news, 'Procreating Satan', the opening track from [2003's] 'Twilight of the Idols', has been remixed by Zardonic (electronic artist and producer). Click here to listen to it."
GORGOROTH reportedly recorded several shows on their recent European tour with 1349 for an upcoming live album, entitled "True Norwegian Black Metal". Scheduled for a late autumn release in 2007, it will mark and celebrate GORGOROTH's 15-year anniversary.
GORGOROTH's new album, "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam", is tentatively scheduled for release later in the year via Sweden's Regain Records. The band were most recently signed to Nuclear Blast Records, who released the band's last three efforts: "Twilight of the Idols" (2003), "Incipit Satan" (2000) and "Destroyer" (1998).
GORGOROTH's first three albums - "Pentagram" (1994), "Antichrist" (1996) and "Under the Sign of Hell" (1997) - were re-released last year

Malaysia's The Star Online has issued the following report:
Black metal, like any other type of music, is only a genre, said Joseph Prabagar, founder and director of record label Demonzend.
"As far as I know, there is no satanism or cults involved with black metal. I think the authorities should really define what 'black metal' means,” he said.
His reaction came after the National Fatwa Council said that black metal was a deviation from Islamic teachings and those found practising it could be penalised under syariah law.
Prabagar said many bands these days played not only black metal, but also thrash metal, death metal and heavy metal.
"There is a lot of overlapping. It can be very difficult to define what black metal really is.”
He explained that black metal usually had a very fast beat and darker lyrics.
"The term itself was actually taken from the band VENOM's album called 'Black Metal' in the 1980s. And in it, they actually poked fun at satanism. To link satanism and black metal, to me, is just absurd," said Prabagar.
Student Mohd Khairul Idzham, 25, who plays in a band said: "Music is like a knife. It's up to the person holding it to decide what he wants to do with it.
"It really depends on how you use it, but black metal music is just another genre of music."

Former 40 BELOW SUMMER bassist Hector "Hook" Graziani has been forced to leave his new band BLACK MARKET HERO after losing "a big percentage" of his hearing through years of rehearsing and performing. His official statement on the matter reads as follows:
"I never thought that this day would ever come, but what I'm about to say is one of the most hardest and most difficult things to do; so, I'll do it very short and sincerely...
"After thirteen years of non-stop playing, recording, performing music, touring and everything with it, I have to stop doing what I love doing the most... Why? Because I really never took care of my ears, I now have lost a big percentage of my hearing. I always took care and only thought about music, my bandmates, my fans and rock n' roll; but right now I have to take care of myself. So, I'm leaving my new band BLACK MARKET HERO. I wish my brothers in that band the best because they are the best and most dedicated muscians I've ever known. I also want to take this time to deeply thank 40 BELOW SUMMER (Max, Joey, Carlos and Jordan) for rescuing me, bringing me back to music and giving me the best years of my life. Also part of those amazing years have been made possible because of all the dedicated, loyal and undying supportive fans — you all know who you are and you are all the best! I also want to thank all the bands I shared the stage with... the tours, the backstage and onstage moments, as well as all those crazy Jager nights, will always live in my heart.
"To my family, gracias de todo corazon. Thanks for always supporting and accepting my absence all these years.
"To all my fellow muscians, please protect your ears don't wait until it's too late to do so.
"ROCK N' ROLL will always live in me and I will alway live in ROCK N' ROLL."
40 Below Summer played their final show at the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on September 17th with all of the bands original members. It was filmed for a DVD to be sold at a later date. The remaining members of the band, frontman Max Illidge, guitarist Joe D'Amico and bassist Hector Graziani, continued on together under the moniker of Black Market Hero.
