Finland's OMNIUM GATHERUM have issued the following update:
"OMNIUM GATHERUM will begin to record the fourth magnum opus extravaganza in March and this time the album will be done in three different studios; recordings will be done at Sound Supreme Studios by Janne Saksa and at SouthEastSounds by Teemu Aalto and the mixing and mastering will be done at legendary Unisound Studio at Örebro, Sweden by Dan Swanö (NIGHTINGALE, ex-EDGE OF SANITY, BLOODBATH, etc.) who's produced the albums for OPETH, KATATONIA and DISSECTION, for example. So, we could say that we're really enthusiastic about this, surprise! First time the album composing process have been really easy task and this pure fresh spirit can really be heard from the songs. The next level have been entered, so beware folks — autumn 2008 will be time for THE OG INVASION!"
Indiana-based thrashers YEAR OF DESOLATION have issued the following update:
"We've been hard at work over the last few months writing a new record, and we've got about nine songs done and they are all expansive on our past works. The melodies are more melodious, the thrash is more hightop, and of course the death metal is still brutal! We're working on getting some touring lined up and hopefully be in the studio sometime late this year.
As far as the video for 'Suffer Thy Nemesis' goes, we're still going through 'red tape' to get it aired on some television channels that you might all be familiar with. But if worst comes to worst, we'll be releasing it on YouTube and MySpace shortly... stay tuned!" More...

Sweden's AEON have posted the following update:
"We have been working really hard on finding a temporary or permanent solution to our drummer situation. There are some interesting drummers out there that we have been talking to but we have not come to any conclusions just yet."
"And speaking of drummers, we have straightened a few things out with Nils [Fjellström; drums] under the last month. He contacted us and wanted to sort a couple of things out regarding to his earlier behaviors. He is very aware of the damage he caused us and he is just sorry for how things turned out. I believe there where some personal / private issues involved that caused him to get all burned / stressed out and that eventually made him to act the way he did. We are still very disappointed in how things where handled by him, but since Nils is a very good friend of ours, we just can't stay mad at him forever." More...

"Anyway we're obviously anxious to release the shite, hoping to death it will sound necro enough. I just finished up recording my guitar tracks for the upcoming JARBOE solo album (which Colin is recording here at the Menegroth studio in Queens). I’ve also started recording a solo guitar record which will be entirely acoustic. I’m hoping to have this out sometime later in the year and also play some shows/tour as well."

Author/journalist Joel McIver interviewed Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN AND HELL) last week for Total Guitar magazine. An excerpt from the chat follows:
Total Guitar: Is it true that HEAVEN AND HELL are writing songs for a new studio album?
Iommi: Yes, we will be. I'm just putting some riff ideas together now. Then Ronnie [James Dio, vocals] will come over to my house and off we go. We're really looking forward to it, I'm interested to see what will come up. When we've got the basic ideas for the songs ready, we'll probably go over to L.A. and rehearse with the other guys.
Total Guitar: You've been asked about the possibility of a new HEAVEN AND HELL album since the project was announced two years ago. Have you just recently made the decision to record again then?
Iommi: Yes. We talked about it on the last part of the tour. In Japan I said to Ronnie, "Are you up for doing a new album, or what?" and everybody seems really keen to do it.
Total Guitar: Presumably this new album pushes any new recordings from the Ozzy Osbourne-led lineup of BLACK SABBATH further into the future?
Iommi: It does, yes. This project will be a lot quicker, because it makes sense to go into a HEAVEN AND HELL album soon after the tour — while it's still remembered, really.
Total Guitar: Ten years ago I bet you wouldn't have predicted that you'd now be recording a new album as HEAVEN AND HELL, right?
Iommi: No! You just never know. It's been like that for our whole lives, to be honest with you. We do things because they seem like a good idea at the time.

According to The Pulse of Radio, MUDVAYNE's touring and album plans for 2008 have yet to be nailed down. The band was initially rumored as one of the big acts on this summer's Rockstar Mayhem tour, which is already confirmed to include DISTURBED and SLIPKNOT on the bill. MUDVAYNE drummer Matt McDonough told The Pulse of Radio that he heard the same rumors but can't say precisely what MUDVAYNE plans to do. "We almost assuredly will be touring this summer, and we're investigating options of what's gonna happen," he said. "You know, as far as the Mayhem tour, you know, that would be a great situation for us. We're great friends with SLIPKNOT and I believe DISTURBED is on it. God, I'd love to tour with all my bros, my friends, but I think it's just another possibility."
As for the new MUDVAYNE album, McDonough is hoping for a summer release. The band completed most of the recording last summer in New Orleans, but is working on additional material.
MUDVAYNE's plans could also be complicated by the touring schedule of HELLYEAH, the group launched last year that features MUDVAYNE singer Chad Gray and guitarist Greg Tribbett.
HELLYEAH kicked off a new North American tour on Friday (January 25) and plays Tuesday night (January 29) in Charleston, South Carolina.
MUDVAYNE issued a collection of fan-selected rarities late last year titled "By The People, For The People". It sold 22,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at Number 51 on the Billboard album chart.
The Pulse of Radio reports that DISTURBED is looking at a late May release for its fourth studio album, titled "Indestructible". A single is likely to surface at radio stations sometime in March, although the song itself has yet to be finalized. The group is reportedly working on a number of promotional ideas to support the record. Singer David Draiman, a strong proponent of making music a purely digital product, told The Pulse of Radio that the band will nevertheless add a lot of extra features to the CD. "I definitely am all for any record companies being as aggressive as they can about moving towards just completely digital-based media," he said. "But we will continue to try and do things, and we're still going to do things this record cycle as well, to try and make it where there's a reason to buy it that's beyond what we're doing just musically."
DISTURBED is unofficially confirmed to be touring this summer on the Rockstar Mayhem tour, along with SLIPKNOT and a number of other yet-to-be-announced acts.
The group may also play some smaller shows in the spring, including a special overseas event.
Draiman recently said that "Indestructible" will be a heavier, angrier, more aggressive record than either 2005's "Ten Thousand Fists" or 2002's "Believe".
THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER have lined up the following upcoming tour dates with ANIMOSITY and BRAINDRILL:
March 6 - Millvale, PA @ Mr. Small’s

Billboard.com reports: Don’t expect to see LED ZEPPELIN on the road near you this summer. The current incarnation of the veteran rock act, which reunited for a triumphant Dec. 10 concert at London’s 02 Arena, has no plans to play live — until at least after September, says guitarist Jimmy Page.
Speaking in Tokyo today (Jan. 28), Page said, “The amount of work that we put into the 02, both for ourselves rehearsing and also for the staging of it, was probably what you’d put into a world tour anyway.”
He noted that ZEPPELIN vocalist Robert Plant “also has a parallel project running [with Alison Krauss], and he’s really busy with that project, certainly until September. So I can’t give you any news on anything at the moment.” Page and Krauss released their album “Raising Sand” on Rounder late last year and begin a world tour in Louisville on April 20.
Page admitted that the scale of media interest about LED ZEPPELIN’s O2 performance put the band under a certain amount of pressure during rehearsals, but insisted the LED ZEP chemistry was still there.
“We’d all agreed to take it very, very seriously and have a really good time at the same time,” Page said. “We worked out the songs we were going to play, and it was exhilarating, it was fantastic. Every week was a week to look forward to.”
Norwegian prog/death/black metallers IN VAIN have issued the following update:
"For the first half of this year In Vain will focus on writing new material.
Depending on how the song writing is progressing, we hope to enter the studio this summer to record a new album. Quite a few songs are already finished."

According to the The Metal Report, the two most anticipated summer tours for US hard rock and metal fans for 2008 are taking shape. From the creators of the Vans-Warped tour, we will see the debut of the Rockstar Mayhem tour, sponsored by Rockstar Energy drink which will compete against metal juggernaut, Ozzfest.
The Metal Report can confirm that SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED, and 5 FINGER DEATH PUNCH will in fact be apart of the Rockstar Mayhem tour line up.
As for Ozzfest, OZZY OSBOURNE stated he will headline each show with his solo band, featuring legendary guitarist ZAKK WYLDE. JUDAS PRIEST has been rumored to co-headline in 2008, however new rumors are now suggesting the band may tour with HEAVEN & HELL instead of Ozzfest. More news as it develops.
Nottingham black metal solo artists Aethelred (of Sherwoode) and Anacreon (Of Blaencathra) are currently working on a split release. It will contain twelve tracks in its entirety, five from each artist and two collaboration tracks. Work is close to completion and the full works should be ready by late spring of this year.
Compression's long-awaited upcoming album "Battle of the Ants" is going to production this week. The Baltimore experimental metal band will release "Battle of the Ants" later this year on Hard Volume Records.
Artists Sam Korvus, creator and front man of UK Black Metal band KORVUS, has made a guest appearance on “Opaque Liquid Soul”, the debut track from EVERLASTING DESCENT. Formed in 2006, EVERLASTING DESCENT is the side project of Elle Torry (WORMS OF SABNOCK, MEADS OF ASPHODEL) and Sander Wessels (THE WOUNDED). The track, “Opaque Liquid Soul” was originally recorded in December of that year, but due to location, Torry is UK based, while Wessels is based in Holland, and some technical difficulties, completion had to be delayed until recently. The track can be heard on Everlasting Descent's MySpace page.
In addition to providing the vocals, Korvus, who as well as being an artist, is also a producer specialising in extreme music, mixed and mastered the track and handled the drum programming. Unlike his own project KORVUS, which is one of the innovators in the current resurgence of UK Black Metal, EVERLASTING DESCENT play a unique blend of progressive Death Metal.
KORVUS’ debut album, “In the Name of Lucifer” was released in September 2007 on his own independent label, Korvus Productions. Commenting on why he chose to release and produce the album himself, as well as record all the instruments and vocals, Sam Korvus says: “Working as an independent artist creates a great advantage in that it allows me to have complete control over every aspect of my music, rather than trying to describe to someone else how I want it to sound. Production plays a huge role in creating the right atmosphere on any piece, so it is important for me to be in control of that side of the music, as well as the performance and composition. This is also one of the reasons I chose to set up my own label rather than sign my music away to someone else. I have heard too many cases of labels forcing their artists to compromise their music in a way that results in its losing the most important elements, and I am not willing to make that compromise”.
The band’s live line up is augmented by Liam Peaston on rhythm guitars, James Dickenson on bass, and Sam Curtis on drums. Tracks from KORVUS’ “In the Name of Lucifer” can be heard on the band’s official MySpace page.

New York metallers, Severed, issue the following update on their Myspace page:
"I put up some extremely rough, unmixed clips from our upcoming EP, just to give you a taste of what we've been working on. Enjoy them now, before these guys decide that they don't like where I made the cuts"
