Boasting the versatile, multi-dimensional voice of Helena Iren Michaelsen, Imperia has given birth to “Queen of Light.” While often put in the “atmospheric metal” realm, Imperia truly defies simple categorization. Its keyboard-laden music lends itself to a sense of grandiosity, while the guitars anchor the group’s music into a strong rock/metal base.
“I believe we have a lot of different elements in our music and that makes it hard to categorize,” said guitarist Jan “Örkki” Yrlund. “Quite often bands with female singers are described as ‘gothic metal’ but I don't believe that does any justice. In our music we do have fast and slow songs, atmospheric songs, but also fast up-tempo songs. The most recognizable part is the voice of Helena, which is truly remarkable. She can do everything from high soprano voice to deep grunts.”
During the recording of the album Michaelsen gave birth to a daughter, giving the title of the album a deeper meaning. “For Helena the album title has a symbolic meaning and refers to the birth of her daughter Angel,” said Yrlund. “Helena was pregnant while we were doing the first vocal parts, and later when finishing her parts she had already given birth. She wanted to record a piece of the crying of her daughter as well, so you can hear her on the intro to the song ‘Queen of Light.’”
Spread out through Europe – Michaelsen and keyboardist Audun Gronnestad in Norway, Yrlund in Finland, guitarist John Stam in Holland, drummer Steve Wolz in Germany, and bassist Gerry Verstreken in Belgium – the group does its songwriting in home studios.
“We send a lot of files around through the internet,” Yrlund said. “When we have decided which songs we will record, we get together and head for the studio. The songs on the latest album are written by me and our keyboard wizard Audun but everybody’s role is equally important in the recording process.”
“Queen of Light” is available through Locomotive Music.
UK black/death metallers SCYTHIAN have inked a deal with Galactic Records. The group will enter the studio mid-February to record its first full-length album for a summer release.
"Whelped on the teachings of BATHORY and SODOM, SCYTHIAN formed in 2004, following the fated meeting of A. Satyrus (guitar) and J. Volgaard (drums)," reads a press release. "In brotherhood, the visionary and the master-craftsman were unified, working tirelessly towards an individual musical identity, which was not only true to them but to the heroes who had first inspired them to take up arms and march on the world. Cursed in the beginning by defeat and dishonour, the pair would find strength, symbolic purpose and a staunch ally in S. Vrath (vocals/bass), a warlord of some small renown who would lead the three across bloodied fields to undiscovered lands and the recording of their first demo, 'Suffering To The Conquered'."

Swedish, old-school death metallers PAGANIZER have posted two songs from their upcoming album, "Carnage Junkie", on their MySpace page. Check out the tracks "The Cadaverous" and "Alone in the Morgue" at this location.
"Carnage Junkie" will be released later in the year via Vic Records. Te CD was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö and contains "a shitload of crusty death metal songs [performed by] Rogga Johansson," the group previously stated. "However, this time bass player Patrik Myrén didn't just write half a song but two of his own and they are fuckin' killer too. So if you guys hate PAGANIZER chances are you might hate two of the songs a bit less this time around. Those chances are quite slim though as they sound PAGANIZER through and through (maybe a slight bit better though) and are as usual simple and catchy enough to for beer-drinking/hog-mounting. The artwork for the new album was done by Ivan Bragin." More...

North Carolina-based metallers DAYLIGHT DIES have issued the following update:
"The end of the recording sessions for our new album, 'Lost to the Living', draws near. Atmospherics such as subtle keys are also finished, leaving only a few bowed bass sections and Nathan's [Ellis] vocals remaining. Shortly after we'll send the material to Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden who will spend about eight days mixing and mastering the material.
"Everyone is pleased to hear the album finally coming closer to the final form. View a short video containing odds and ends from recent studio sessions below.

OBITUARY vocalist John Tardy has posted this message on the band's official website:
"The show last night in Glauchau (Germany) was totally sick and packed! We really appreciate all the support from our German fans. I think we have played like six shows in Germany and all the shows there were awesome. We will be back for one more show on (January) 30 in Munich. Today, we are in Prague, Czech Republic and it looks like from the presales that the show at Abaton may end up sold out! I am sure it is going to be crazy in here tonight! Tomorrow is a day off, and after seven consecutive shows I think we are all ready for that. The plan is to spend the day in Budapest, Hungary, which is also the city where the next show will be! A38 is the club we will be at."
Guitarist Ralph Santolla also posted this message yesterday:
"Yesterday was Langenprozelten, Germany. It's a small village near the site of the Up From The Ground Festival. The venue was right next to a river and mountains, so it was a better vibe than the usual industrial scenery. Another day of sitting around with not much to do, so we started working out our set list for the summer festivals. We've got some surprises for you guys, you should be happy with what we've come up with. Thanks to all the people who came out last night. Tonight we're in Eastern Germany, a town called Glauchau. It's cold as hell, but it looks like a sold out show."

German melodic metallers DOMAIN are currently in the studio recording their ninth album, entitled "The Chronicles of Love, Hate and Sorrow". According to the band, the CD will be a concept album along the lines of the "Last Days of Utopia" LP, but this time it will be arranged and conceived as a "metal opera."
Last week, DOMAIN's Steven Wussow entered Meadow Studios to lay down the bass tracks for the group's upcoming CD under the watchful eye of producer and guitarist Axel Ritt.
Vocalist Nick Ruhnow created a 12-chapter unfolding drama based on the legendary epistolary novel "Die Leiden Des Jungen Werther" by the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The opus will be performed by guitarist Axel Ritt, keyboardist Erdmann Lange, bassist Steven Wussow and Ruhnow himself, enriched with hard and anthem metal, epic heavy rock and ballad elements.
Released for the first time in 1774, the story "Die Leiden Des Jungen Werther" became a key work in German literature during the "Storm And Stress" period and describes an impossible love against all moral concepts, which provokes extreme emotional reactions up to the point of a spate of suicides among young readers of the novel.
"The Chronicles of Love, Hate and Sorrow" will be released in the fall.
Wausau, Wisconsin's Wausau Daily Herald reports: When eight area heavy metal/punk/rock bands from north central Wisconsin performed as part of a fundraiser at Coral Lanes last weekend, they had hoped to raise about $1,000, maybe $1,500.
The bands were playing for 1-year-old Keyshon Ivey and his family. Born with short-gut syndrome, Keyshon has been in and out of hospitals since birth. More recently, he has been in Omaha to treat the syndrome. Doctors have been working at Nebraska Medical Center to prevent the need for a bowel transplant.
Keyshon is the son of Holly Mecikalski and her boyfriend, Randal Ivey. Mecikalski really isn't a fan of heavy metal music, but her brother, Nate Toschner, 30, is a guitarist for the Wausau chunk metal band ALL FEAR ASIDE.
When word got out in the metal community about Toschner's nephew, they banded together to do something about it. That's when the "Save Baby Keyshon" fundraiser took off. The lead organizer of the event was Aric "Sheek" Chil'-Cote. In addition to ALL FEAR ASIDE, the bands REPEATED TRAUMA, PREY ON HOPE, BEYOND THERAPY, X YOUR EYES, LOWER CLASS CITIZENS, SOLANUM PLAGUE and PONEY took the stage.
It all went so much better than Sheek and others had imagined. They raised about $3,100 to help offset medical costs and to help pay living expenses for the family.
PILEDRIVER mainman The Exalted Piledriver has issued the following update:
"I walked into Long & McQuade, not even remotely looking for a sister for my trusty 'standard', and ended up falling spiked-head over leather-heels for one of her ugliest cousins, a stanky BFG in trans-black!!!"
"RIGHT UP MY GROTTY DIRT-METAL ALLEY!!! Thanks for creating the perfect Gibby for me, The Exalted Piledriver!!! All that I love from my standard lp, with a lowdown unpretentious grunt and greasery in execution of errant-aesthetics... these guitars have no time to hang around the factory getting 'finished'... they're born to burn riffs hot, fast, and loud ASAP!!! Ugliness in urgency!!!" More...
Belgium metallers, Inocculta, issue the following update:
"As a matter of urgency, Inocculta is looking for a guitarist with experience, with its own equipment, open-minded and who can practise rock and metal in general. If you are interested, or if you know someone who might be, please contact us."
Charleston, West Virginia metal band Byzantine has called it quits. Formed in 2000, the group has released three full-length albums with Prosthetic Records. The following statement has been issued:
"As of today Byzantine is no longer a functioning band. Due to various circumstances the band will not be touring or performing together. We would like to first thank everyone that has supported this band throughout the years. You are the people that really made everything worthwhile and we are amazed at the wonderful response we have had from all of you. Because of you, we were part of something special and without you none of this would have been possible. Next, we would like to thank all the kickass bands that we have played shows with and hung out with. These were good times that we won't soon forget. It's with heavy hearts that we move on from this. Sincerely, from all of us in Byzantine, thank you so very much for the great experience that this was. Stay metal everyone. Montani Semper Liberi."
UK's Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott (HELLYEAH, PANTERA, DAMAGEPLAN) for its January 2008 issue, which celebrates the life of Vinnie's brother, late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Metal Hammer: Do you think [Dimebag] gets the recognition he deserves? That people were too quick to merely see him as Dimebag the party animal and not the talented guitarist?
Vinnie: No, he knew those things went hand in hand. He knew he was the life of the party and a character and that kind of came along with everything he did. That was okay with him and okay with us.
Metal Hammer: Did the pair of you turn to each other for support when Phil Anselmo [PANTERA singer] started encountering his various problems whilst in PANTERA?
Vinnie: Oh, yeah, we spoke to each other about it all the time. We'd made several attempts to reach out to Phil. In the end, we felt it had gone too far and we really needed to do something. I remember, Dime had made some demos, and Jerry Cantrell [ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist] was over. We were just hanging out, pretty depressed. Dime took Jerry out in the car and played him the demos — which later became DAMAGEPLAN — and Jerry said, "You need to move on and do your own thing." Dime came back into the house and said, "Fuck this shit, we're not waiting around anymore. Let's just start our own band and do our own thing." And that's how DAMAGEPLAN came about.
Metal Hammer: Much has been made of the interview Phil did with Metal Hammer in 2004, just prior to Dimebag's tragic death, to the extent that you actually requested a tape of that interview to confirm its veracity, which we supplied. Since then, Phil has said a lot online and in the press about wanting to make amends. Has he ever tried to make contact with you?
Vinnie: No, man. I don't want to talk to him. I don't believe anything he says. He's the master of lies. He says that shit because he wants the fans to believe what he has to say and follow what he does. And they're like sheep and they will. I don't want to elaborate on it any further apart from to say: listen to the Metal Hammer interview and you'll know exactly how he felt about my brother. He can say anything he wants, now on the backside.
Metal Hammer: This is obviously a very sensitive area, and I hope you don't mind me asking the question, and you don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but what memories do you have of that tragic night?
Vinnie: Ah, man, the last thing that really matters to me is the last thing we said to each other before we went on stage. We were warming up on the side of the stage like we always did and we were both really excited — we only had two shows left and we were gonna be going home for Christmas and to begin work on the second [DAMAGEPLAN] record. Our code word to let it all hang out and have a good time was "Van Halen," man. And that's the last two words we ever said to each other. I said "Van Halen" and he said "Van Halen" and we high-fived each other and went on the deck to do our thing… and a minute and a half later I'll never see him again.

Commented the group: "We shot our new video some time ago and it is starting to be ready. It's looking damn good and will be something a way cooler than we've ever done before. Guitarist Bill Hudson has quit the Nebraska-based extreme power metal babd CELLADOR. His statement on the matter reads as follows:
"After thinking about it for a long time and after a very relaxing holiday season, which included appearances at the NAMM show in Anaheim, I have decided that it's best for me if I part ways with CELLADOR.
"I'll be flying back to Omaha tomorrow, but the band is already aware of my decision. I'm really only going back to take care of the last details, before I move to L.A. permanently.
"CELLADOR and I did great things together, and a good fan-base was built. I played some of the most insane shows of my life with this band, including our recent appearance at Loudpark 07 in Japan in front of 12,000 crazy fans, and one at ProgPower USA, which was a dream I had since I was a teenager. Not to mention the great tours we were in during 2006.
"As far as my career goes, I'm starting a new band with a lineup that features some well-known names, but that info will be released at a later time. Look forward to some kick-ass metal!
"CELLADOR was a great experience which I'll remember for a long time.
"I want to thank everybody in and involved with CELLADOR, our record label Metal Blade Records and all of our fans from all over the world for the support!
"Trust me; I will NOT let you down with my new material! It's already writen and most of it is demoed. It'll be posted before you think!"
CELLADOR's debut CD, "Enter Deception", was released in June 2006 via Metal Blade.
UK's Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with late PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott's girlfriend of 20 years, Rita Haney, for its January 2008 issue, which celebrates Dimebag's life and musical accomplishments. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
Metal Hammer: How are thing with Phil [Anselmo, former PANTERA singer] and Rex [Brown, former PANTERA bassist] and you?
Rita: I loved both of those boys with all my heart and soul, but I can't love them now. When Darrell forgives them, then I can. It hurts me to have to say that and to know that.
Metal Hammer: How badly did Phil pulling himself away from PANTERA affect Darrell on a personal level? And also the feud that exploded in the press between Phil and the others [see previous BLABBERMOUTH.NET stories containing quotes from Phil and the other guys — Ed.]?
Rita: I have a two-page letter where [Dimebag] wrote Philip. And it says, "I am done with him. I will never stand on stage with him and I will never give him the recognition he thinks he deserves because I know I never did anything wrong to him." And it says, "No longer will he trample through my peaceful mind." When I found that in [Dimebag's] bunk [after he was murdered], I cried.
Metal Hammer: Do you think that had Darrell not been murdered that he and Vinnie might have eventually made their peace with Phil, and PANTERA might have gotten back together?
Rita: I know Darrell had thoughts about it. He was having problems with Patrick [Lachman, DAMAGEPLAN singer], who turned out totally not to be the person we thought he was. He started trying to give ultimatums about not singing PANTERA songs and Darrell goes, "Let me tell you something: this is who I am. Whether I'm called that or not, that's my heart and soul, and yes, you will sing them. You knew it when you joined this band."
Metal Hammer: And things with Rex [Brown, former PANTERA bassist]?
Rita: Darrell talked to Rex on [Dimebag's 38th] birthday — August 20, 2004 — and he told Rex straight-up, "Dude, I'm not going to go out and have a steak with you today. Maybe I will in the future. The reason I'm talking to you right now is because we have a history. You lived on my couch, my mother was your mother, you were my brother. But you are just as much to blame for this whole thing, and quit blaming it all on Phil. You need to answer for yourself." And Rex kept saying, "Well, Phil was gonna do it anyway," and Darrell says, "I don't care — answer for yourself. Because you know what, motherfucker? You got a free ride through this PANTERA thing. So don't tell me it's all Phil's fault — you were along for the full-meal deal!" That's why there's a credit on "DimeVision" [the "DimeVision - Vol 1: That's The Fun I Have" 2006 DVD tribute to Dimebag compiled largely by Rita Haney] that says, "Rex Rocker — Full Meal Deal."

SYMPHONY X's online administrator has checked in with the following update:
"I spoke to (guitarist) MJR yesterday, and he actually asked me about the poll before I had a chance to tell him about it; he was very interested to hear what the results were. He was on his way out the door to meet up with some of the other guys, and took a few minutes to write down the top fives so that they could discuss them; just like the last poll, he was surprised by some of the songs you all asked to hear. You'll be happy to hear that he said that they will definitely be using some of the songs that ya'll asked for. He also asked me to pass on the band's thanks to all of you for participating, so thank you from the band!
One more thing: Fan club members, stay tuned for an e-mail regarding the new membership structure, renewals, and the next fan club CD (which is going to be AWESOME)!"

Finnish rock legends HANOI ROCKS have issued the update:
"Hanoi Rocks will end their working relationship with their current drummer Lacu. Lacu will leave the band after Hanoi Rocks’ European tour, which will start from Stockholm on February 14th and will finish at the Astoria Club in London on March 7th. The change behind the drumkit will not affect the forthcoming Hanoi Rocks gigs or tours. The new drummer will be announced soon."
CELTIC FROST mainman Tom Gabriel Fischer has issued the following update:
"Only a few hours until I am to depart to Norway for a few weeks to participate in the production of a black metal project with close friends and peers. In early March I shall return to Switzerland to take further steps towards the realization of my own black metal/doom side project, the idea for which has taken an increasingly defined shape during the past months."
Fischer spoke to Spanish metal webizne Hall Of Metal recently about new material: "I’m actually working on a new album of Celtic Frost and I think it’s going to be really extreme and dark. Celtic Frost has its own style, its own sound and it expresses a lot of emotions. The music I write shows the state of my life, and now I feel very comfortable with such dark music."
The Unholy Norwegian Black Metal band THRONE OF KATARSIS have started the recording of their next album to be entitled "Det Iskalde Moerket".
