Unearthing the Brutal Davao Underground

There must be something in the water down in Davao in the southern Philippines, because the sprawling city has produced some of the most brutal, slamming, and at times technical death metal in all of Southeast Asia in recent years. The global brutal death community is beginning to take notice of the Davao scene, as some of the bands are starting to get signed by labels of note in the sub-genre, such as Coyote Records and Sevared Records. Here are a few bands making more than their fair share of gurgling, putrid noise in Davao City, Philippines.

Human Mastication

Human Mastication has been blasting out slamming sickness since 2002, and in that time has developed a rock solid international reputation as one of the top slam bands in the business. The early years of the band saw the release of a collection of splits and demos before Human Mastication was picked up by Sevared Records for its debut full length release in 2008, “Grotesque Mastication of Putrid Innards.” Sevared also put out the band’s latest EP, “Persecute to Bloodbath,” last year. Chugging, slamming riffs, disgustingly guttural vocals, liberal use of pinch harmonics, and some combustible groove are all key elements of the Human Mastication formula. This band is currently top of the heap in the Davao brutal scene, and 2012 marks a decade of dedication to unholy slam for vocalist Gee and his comrades in gore. Expect more trademark slamming groove from Human Mastication in the near future.

Held in Asbury Park, NJ, Tesseract will perform on May 20th, appearing alongside a number of impressive performers. The band commented:

"Festivals are always great to do, but for our first US festival to be Bamboozle is crazy. To be on the same bill as Incubus, Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi is a great boost for us. Bamboozle has a great tradition of mixing things up, and the bill for the 10 year anniversary festival looks to be adhering firmly to this, with bands like TesseracT, Periphery and Whitechapel sharing the stage with Skrillex, Jimmy Eat World and All American Rejects. It looks like it's going to be great fun!"

Vendlus Records has confirmed the upcoming debut from Oakland, California based abstract metal act, Dimesland. The following press release was issued about the band:

"The eclectic act has a strong interest in tension, mutation and fracture, in evidence not only harmonically and rhythmically but also within blurred tales of psychological havoc. Featuring members of The Residents and Wild Hunt, Dimesland was formed in 2006 by guitarists Nolan Cook and Drew Cook, and after several incarnations the lineup was solidified with the addition of drummer Harland Burkhart and bassist/vocalist Greg Brace.

"The band’s live shows are frantic and dense and feature songs woven together with shorter pieces and soundscapes for an almost nonstop presentation of sound. Dimesland’s debut EP, Creepmoon, will see release via Vendlus Records on February 14, 2012."

The track listing is as follows:

1. Trophy Wives Under the Influence
2. Architect
3. Revlev
4. Degradation Suite
5. Ghastly Maneuvering
6. Burnt Orange

Bevar Sea Reveals New Album Details

Bevar Sea has issued the following statement about the band's upcoming self-titled, debut album:

"2011 was a good year for Bevar Sea, with several gigs in the bag and great response from the local audience to their take on slow and heavy music. 2012 threatens to up the ante, with the impending release of the self-titled debut album, featuring the best-known songs from their live set. Track list:

1. Universal Sleeper
2. Abishtu
3. The Smiler
4. Mono Gnome

"We've had a great time performing these songs since we made our stage debut. After a year of playing them out and getting better, we thought it was the right time to hit the studio and put out our first album. On the one hand, it's been a challenge to capture the live vibe on the recordings, and on the other, being in the studio and listening to the songs over and over has allowed us to fine-tune the arrangements. One of our favourite engineers/producers is going to be mixing this, so this is going to be a mindblowing experience for us." More...

Axemaster Issues Album Update

Axemaster has checked in with the following progress report on the band's upcoming new album:

"Axemaster is making good steady progress on the final writing and the recording/production of their new CD. Guitarist Joe Sims is producing the album and has done early mixes of the guitar and drums for 5 songs which so far sound 100% better than any of the band's previous releases.

"The response from the few people who have listened to them has been outstanding. A contact of the band who writes for several European metal publications (including a major magazine) listened to a couple of the advance mixes and said this about one of the songs: 'The riffing is so supreme! The main riff in the song is almost killing me. Fuck yes! And killer lead-fills too. The song has a mean drive to it and makes the listener headbang automatically. What a great song! I love it!!! I am so curious how it will sound with lyrics (although I could also live with a pure instrumental).'"

Guitarist Joe Sims also said about the recording, "This is the first release I have produced on my own and the result so far is much better than even I expected. I have been taking my time and paying attention to every small detail and it's DEFINITELY paying off. This material is by far the best stuff I have ever done and the CD has to have the sound quality to match. So far so good, the sound's there and the performances have been top notch!" More...

Matt Johnsen Of Pharaoh Talks About The New Album

As Pharaoh's fourth album, "Bury the Light," will be unveiled on March 6th in the U.S. (February 24th in Europe), it is hard to fathom that this Philadelphia power metal band is going on seventeen years of existence. But much can be attributed to all of the members of Pharaoh being vocal about creating quality power metal for the sake of doing so, trudging on all these years for the love of what they do despite not achieving great commercial success. "Bury the Light" is the logical progression from Pharaoh's last one, "Be Gone," and unleashes ten tracks of epic power metal that will further cement this band's status as one of the best traditional metal bands currently out there. Streaming the new track "Castles in the Sky" here on Metal Underground recently, we also caught up with cerebral and quirky Pharaoh guitarist Matt Johnsen to get his take on the new album, the band and the metal community as a whole.
