Last Year's Tragedy, which was covered in the Kenyan edition of our "Unearthing the Metal Underground" column, has released a new song online for streaming and download.
It's Tuesday again, which means we've got a new metal show story taken from the underground musicians themselves who keep the scene running. This week guitarist/vocalist Spencer Le Von from Canadian thrash act Fatality shares the following tale of the band's first show going horribly wrong:
My pit story was actually from Fatality’s first-ever live show when I was at the supple age of 15. We were performing at a dive called Club Rockit in Downtown Toronto back in 2004. I will never forget this story because it incorporates all of the elements that make up a nightmare gig, and how I handled it as a confused 15-year-old zilch. First of all, it was in the middle of January, and there was a massive storm that hit Toronto and we barely made it to the gig as we slid up and down the highway. Also, right before we hit the stage, I opened my guitar case and to my complete chagrin: my fuckin’ ax was smashed in 2 pieces.
So, up we went. There was me with no guitar and no sense of what to do with my hands as I clumsily sang through our songs like a mush-mouthed buffoon. Boy, we (I) stank up the joint good. As we got closer to the end of the set, I realized I had a decision to make: play out the last of our songs half heartedly, and then pack up and go home for a good cry, or do something so fuckin’ stupid that even though we were playing mediocre at best, the crowd would still go home and remember us. I chose the latter. In one foul swoop, I pulled of my pants and shirt reveling a tainted, ripe, skid-marked pair of tighty-whities and a matching pasty white stomach. I then proceeded to jump into the mosh pit and clobbered the shit out of people as my band riffed on the stage above.
It was this night that I learned a major lesson. There is no such thing as the perfect gig, and each night has a different obstacle to overcome. What makes a good performer is not just in how well he can play; it’s all in his capacity to deal with the bullshit!

"Treason, Politics & Death," the new video from Mexico's Acrania, can be seen below. Acrania collaborated with the young filmmaker Armando Salomo and King Bong Entertainment to premier this first video clip. The band also commented:
"The performance portion of the clip was shot on the Film Training Center in Mexico City, with state of the art video equipment and an excellent crew, 'Treason, Politics & Death' shows us the power of death metal with quick shots and excellent dynamic lighting, as well as the Latin touch of non-metal instruments such as percussion, trumpet and saxophone, showing the excellent performance of Mexican musicians.
"The song is about the social conflict in Managua, so we used stock images of conflicts in Latin America, interleaved with footage of the band playing to reinforce the overall protest feel of the song." More...

Ohio's The Approach and The Execution has checked in with the following announcement about continuing on as a five piece after lineup changes last year:
"Hello Friends, Fans, and Fellow Metalheads!! We are very pleased to finally be able to formally announce that The Approach & The Execution will be moving on as a 5 piece, instead of hiring a replacement for Mr. Jeremy Langham. Sam will be taking on all the growls and screams from this point forward and Mikey will be holding it down solo on the clean vocals.
"We wanted to take this time to thank everyone for their support, patience, and advice as we were making our final decision. The words of wisdom, encouragement, and urgency have been a big guiding light in some of the decisions we've made, and without them, we might be in a different position. So thank you all very much!
"Also, we are working very diligently on writing new material and have a great start on the next album. After speaking this past weekend, we are hoping for a Summer release date. In the meantime, we are slated to record the first single, 'The Warrior's Psalm' at the end of March and will be released in early April. But you won't have to wait that long to hear it!
"There are very serious and urgent talks in The Approach camp about a comeback show in early March! No details have been figured out yet, but that is the time frame we are hoping for. More details will be announced in the upcoming weeks, so stay tuned! Thanks again for your support and we look forward to seeing you at a show very soon!"

Having raided the death/doom underworld since 1996, Tokyo's brutal doom metal eradicators Coffins have once again entered their local Noise Room Studio, and are currently laying down vocals for new LP "The Fleshland."
Although Coffins seemingly always have a new release out -- with a plethora of splits, EP’s, singles and a recent track released as part of Decibel Magazine’s Flexi Series having been released in the past few years alone -- the band’s upcoming fourth album "The Fleshland" will be the first new full-length from the outfit since 2008's "Buried Death" album.
The band's first official release for Relapse Records, Coffins will wrap-up studio work on "The Fleshland" by the end of January, with the album set for release later this year.
For now, ravenous fans of Coffins can get a bit of insight into the new album’s cacophony with a pre-production demo track of “Colossal Hole” -- which will reappear on "The Fleshland" in its finished state -- via Cvlt Nation right here or in the player below. More...
After the maiden voyage in 2012, Decibel Magazine is doubling down on veteran star power for a second annual national tour.
This spring, the plague spreads as Decibel brings you three living legends of death metal and grindcore: the preeminent gore institution Cannibal Corpse; rabble-rousing U.K. grind icons Napalm Death, and NYDM stalwarts Immolation. The following press release was issued about the tour:
"While occultism permeated last spring's inaugural dB tour—featuring exclusively European headliners in Behemoth, Watain, the Devil's Blood and In Solitude—they looked (mostly) to North America for this year's unholy assemblage. Three of Decibel's favorite underground powerhouses will take on this year's rotating opening slot: demented Bay Area death-grinders Cretin, Canadian tech-prog upstarts Beyond Creation and Beltway grind/powerviolence crushers Magrudergrind. And the time is ripe to see the new bleed into the old: three of the six artists performing are expected to have new records detonating during the tour.
"Kicking off in May, this year's Decibel Magazine Tour gauntlet will last a full week longer than its 2012 counterpart, spanning over 30 North American dates. Presented by Metal Blade, Indiemerchstore.com, Nuclear Blast, Lace Pickups, Century Media and Season of Mist, the 2013 Decibel Magazine Tour will bring together the kind of globally-renowned, boundary-pushing innovators that have made it possible for the magazine to continue thriving for over 100 issues. Coming off a tour noted for Behemoth frontman Nergal's triumphant return to the States following his battle with leukemia—which culiminated in an explosive sold-out closing gig in New York City—Decibel had no choice but to go bigger and even more badass." Bring Me The Horizon has released a new music video for “Shadow Moses,” which is taken from the band's new album "Sempiternal," due out April 30th via Epitaph Records. Check out the video clip below. The following press release was also issued about the video:
"Shot on the snowy and foggy shoreline of Germany’s largest island, Rugen, the performance video for 'Shadow Moses' takes from the song’s lyrical theme of 'going nowhere' and creates an abstract and fragmented narrative that cues fans about to what’s to come in the next BMTH video. On a technical side, the video was shot with a 'camera – shift technique' developed by director, Fabian Röttger, that gives the viewer a 3D like experience without the need of special screen or glasses." Season of Mist has issued the following announcement about welcoming back Seth to the label's roster:
"The French black metallers' debut album 'Les Blessures de l’Ame’ (1998) was one of the label’s very first releases and it’s great to have the band back in the family. Seth's upcoming fifth album is entitled ‘The Howling Spirit’ and has been scheduled for release on June 7th (June 11th in North America)."
Band leader Heimoth issued the following statement: “This is some exceptional moment for us as we are now officially back on the very same label that released our first album in 98’ and I guess this truly makes our recent comeback even more worthwhile. Both parts have taken different directions for more than 10 years but we are thrilled to unveil ‘The Howling Spirit’ together. I personally feel this is a significant step forward born from the special relationship the band and SOM have had through the years.”
"Les Blessures de l’Ame" was re-released last year in a remastered edition including two bonus tracks and brand new artwork.
French hardcore outfit Vera Cruz is streaming new album "Skinandteethandnails" in its entirety at AMPMagazine.com here. The band’s Season of Mist debut features eleven tracks of pulse pounding, relentless hardcore/metal and is out in North America now. Season of Mist comments on the album:
"Vera Cruz embraces the fine art of serious ass kicking with 'Skinandteethandnails.' Balancing melodic hardcore with rock influences, the French display astonishing mastery for such a young band. 'Skinandteethandnails' captures the explosive energy Vera Cruz unleash during their live shows."
On the album, the band states: "There's an overall theme about this album and the way it has been thought and composed. We always try to reach a sort of 'Holy Grail' in every song but like the latter, whatever is Holy doesn't lie in front of your eyes for everyone to see. It’s rather a kind of quest to find it. We would like people to be able to find what they've been seeking with our music. It's for everyone to decipher it and find what's under the surface." More...

Irish Celtic Doom act Mael Mordha has signed on with Candlelight Records. The band has written the follow up LP to the 2010 release "Manannán," which will be the fourth full length release. No details or release date for the new album have been announced.
The press release reads as follows:
"Candlelight Records is proud to announce the signing of Celtic Doom Metal masters Mael Mordha (pronounced MAIL MOOR-AH)
"Mael Mórdha’s sound is a unique fusion of traditional Irish folk laments and elegies with the crushing power of doom metal. The band views its music as conduit between this world and the spirit world and its songs provide a dark, melancholy and epic soundtrack to historical and mythological tales of ancient Ireland.
"Formed in Dublin in 1998 by Roibéard Ó Bogail, whose unusual ‘Sean-nós’ inspired traditional Irish vocal style gives the band its distinctive sound, Mael Mórdha takes its name from a former King of Leinster, who met a bloody end in battle in the year 1014 A.D.
"The band endured a number of line-up changes while self-releasing three EP’s between 1999 and 2003, before signing to Hammerheart Records/Karmageddon Media who released the band’s debut full-length album ‘Cluain Tarbh’ in 2005.
"Later that year the band moved to ‘Grau Records’ and went on to release two new album’s; 2007’s ‘Gealtacht Mael Mórdha’, and 2010’s ‘Manannán’ through the German label which also re-released an extended version of ‘Cluain Tarbh’ in 2008. More...

Australian melodic metallers LORD have set the Australian release date of their forthcoming album "Digital Lies" as February 22, 2013. Dates for New Zealand and Japan to follow, along with announcements for distribution partners for the rest of the world.
LORD mainman LT commented: “Finally! It seems like a lifetime since we started this album until this point, but we’re finally here. For this release, we thought long and hard about other options regarding labels and, frankly, it’s a mess out there. The larger labels are doing everything they can to protect their revenue and are being very cautious about who they deal with, and the smaller labels are at the mercy of a very volatile and changing market, and you can never be sure they’ll be still in business once the time to pay up comes around – we’ve unfortunately had to wear the consequences of that in the past.
"We’ve chosen once again to distribute this release via Riot! Entertainment for Australia and New Zealand and Rubicon Music for Japan since we had such a great experience with them for our previous album ‘Set In Stone‘. For the rest of the world, however, we’ve chosen this time to keep as much control over our product as we can by planning to export to stores around the globe and sell directly from our own web store. As I mentioned before, the market is so fickle now, trusting a label to even be there let alone pay up is a risk we just can’t afford to take if we want to keep touring and releasing albums – simple as that."
"Pre-sales from our online store begin from Monday, January 28 and the album will be available both as a physical product in Australia from February 22 as well as a digital download which will be available worldwide. More...

Texas based act Scorpion Child posted a lyric video for the track "Polygon of Eyes." The song will appear on the band's self-titled debut LP expected in May from Nuclear Blast Records.
"Scorpion Child's sound invokes a time when guitar-driven rock ruled radio's airwaves, when being hypnotized by a frontman and his bandmates in a concert arena was one of life's ultimate main events. A five-piece from Austin, Texas, Scorpion Child have spent the last few years perfecting both their songwriting and stage show. Guitarists Chris Cowart and David Finner deliver their finessed twin guitar attack with experience older than their years; bassist Shaun Avants and drummer Shawn Alvear are steadfast sentinels of their driving rhythm section; and lead singer Aryn Jonathan Black fronts the psychedelic rock cavalry with a passion & voice reminiscent of the early eras of Robert Plant and Ronnie James Dio.
"This May, Nuclear Blast Entertainment will release Scorpion Child's self-titled, full-length debut. Produced and arranged by Chris "Frenchie" Smith (The Answer, Jet, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, The Toadies, Dax Riggs), the album uses analog recording technology to organically capture a hybrid of nine, hook-filled chapters of heavy psych rock. The goal? To breathe new life into a neglected yet still important musical heritage."
