The hopes on 'Operation Zitadelle' were high to regain the initiative back and turn the tide for the Axis' favor once again; but eventually it resulted in a failure for the Wehrmacht, and marked a major turning point in the course of the war.
"The battle is known as the largest tank engagement thus far: Wehrmacht's panzer battalions destroyed Russian tanks with a overwhelming ratio; only the sheer amount of Soviet armor, especially T-34s, arriving into the battlefield almost straight-from-the-factory, sometimes even totally unpainted - and the fact that the Russians managed to set up very good anti-tank defences in advance due to good intelligence - resulted in the Axis' downfall."
