Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles today offers up Stratovarius’ “Halcyon Days” for your streaming enjoyment. The tune comes off the melodic metal legends’ forthcoming offering, "Nemesis."
Among Kotipelto’s favorite songs on the record, “Halcyon Days,” is about finding peace in the increasingly hectic landscape of daily life. Listen to the song at this location.
Produced and mixed by guitarist Matias Kupiainen and mastered by Mika Jussila (Finnvox Studios), the 11-track "Nemesis" will be released in North America via Armoury Records on February 26th, 2013. Notes vocalist Timo Kotipelto of the album:
“It has a darker more modern sound. We, as a band, have gone through a lot and have matured as songwriters. We have worked our asses off to make this and we hope the fans will like it.”
In celebration of its release, Manhattan’s Idle Hands Bar will be hosting a special "Nemesis" listening party on the evening of January 21st where both Kotipelto and keyboardist Jens Johansson will be in attendance. More...
Sweden's Morker has checked in with the following update about releasing a new EP instead of a full-length album:
"There has been a drastic change of plans. Instead of releasing the full-length album that was planned from the beginning, we will release a 7" EP with 2 songs called Ensamhet, with Jani on drums.
"For the full-length album we will have to find another drummer, but that won't be a problem since we are working on that as we speak.
"This EP will be limited to 250 copies. More info about this release later. B-side is exclusive for this EP and won't be released anywhere else.
"We have started the recordings a while back. Drums, guitars, and bass has been recorded for the A-side, keys/piano and vocals left. B-side was recorded earlier this year."
You can also check out Morker's music by heading over to the band's MySpace page here.

Each Tuesday we have metal musicians check in with their most memorable mosh pit stories from live shows.
This week vocalist Tom Emmans of Odium shares the following story of a truly dedicated (or perhaps just overly drunk) fan fighting through the pain to see the end of a show:
One time at a show in our home town a fan broke a beer bottle in the pit and it sliced his whole arm down to the bone. Everyone was freaking out cause they thought someone had knifed him. Turns out he was just partying and having a good time, not even realizing he was bleeding all over the place. When the ambulance arrived he was trying to convince them to let him stay until we were done. They were like "Uh no. You could bleed out. Your entire arm is cut to the bone." So they raced him to the hospital and stitched him up. He showed up for our last song drunk as fuck, smiling from ear to ear. See you at the next one brother!
You can check out Odium's music by downloading the track "No Way Out" on the free "Happy Metal Annihilation Volume 2" compilation over here, or watch a music video for the track below.
French industrial/ambient black metal band Spektr has revealed a preview of "Cypher," the band's 3rd album that is coming out on the February 5th in Europe/UK and February 19th in North America via Agonia Records. Check out the album preview through the SoundCloud player below. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"Cypher is an experimental black metal album, recorded entirely without vocals except sampling. The album introduces industrial and ambient elements and, as a whole, should be considered as a strongly psychedelic release; it produces a feeling, as if the mind of the listener, dragged into the music, were unable of concentrate itself or were experiencing a powerful hallucinogenic effect. This successor to 'Near Death Experience' (from 2006) will be made available as CD, Vinyl (150 on white & 150 on black vinyl) and digital download."
The "Cypher" track listing is as follows:
3. The Singularity
6. Solve Et Coagula
9. Le Vitriol du Philosophe More...
This week, underground music juggernaut Relapse Records reveals the release info, cover art, and more for Inter Arma’s second LP, "Sky Burial." The label comments:
"A highly anticipated release for fans of all extreme genres, Virginia’s crushing quintet Inter Arma merges elements of doom, psychedelic sludge, grind, black metal and more through massive, mighty riffs to create a sound wholly their own.
"Following several solid demos, splits and an LP via Forcefield Records, this volatile act now delivers their Relapse debut, Sky Burial, an album easily considered an early contender for heavy music record of the year, even making Decibel Magazine’s 20 Most Anticipated Albums Of 2013 list. Emerging from the ever-fertile metal breeding grounds of Richmond, Virginia, Inter Arma has spent the last few years touring relentlessly, perfecting a hypnotically punishing live show.
"Sky Burial brings that focus onto record, an album truly heavy in all senses of the word, invoking a spiritually intense journey through the halls of extreme metal. Inter Arma has made a decisively loud proclamation with Sky Burial -- this is a band that could very well be the next crown-holder in a regal line of iconic Relapse bands."
The "Sky Burial" album will see digital, CD and 2xLP North American release on March 19th, 2013, preceded by European release dates of March 15th in Germany, Benelux and Finland, and March 18th in the UK and all other territories. More...

"As Known Flood," the debut LP from instrumental Brooklyn trio Sannhet draws closer, and today another new track from the expansive album has been made available.
Infiltrated by static-filled radio broadcast samples and white noise, the booming, ethereal buildup of the "Known Flood" fifth track, “Moral,” can be streamed via Pitchfork.com here. The following press release was issued about the album:
"Sannhet’s sprawling debut LP, 'Known Flood' features nearly forty-five minutes of electrified post-metal, fueled with domineering riff-building movements and intense percussive hostility, unifying in a slightly blackened and trance-inducing atmospheric style, captured by Colin Marston (Krallice, Behold… The Arctopus, Dysrhythmia) and mastered by Carl Saff. Belgian progressive death metallers In-Quest have set "8 - The Odyssey Of Eternity" as the title of their new album, scheduled for a late spring release. The follow-up to 2009’s “Made Out of Negative Matter” was recorded at Split Second Sound studio with producer Jochem Jacobs (ex-Textures).
Commented In-Quest guitarist Douglas Verhoeven: "As the world didn't perish in 2012, we are back celebrating our existence' eternity with a massive concept album. For over a year, these songs and themes have been distilled and purified into perfection where everything is connected. I am proud to finally come out with the first of news about our new album. A dense, catchy, polyrhythmic 8 string cyclic opus which will for sure surprise a lot of our fans. A new sound, a redefinition or our core elements, and for sure a new form of aggression. Technical, rich and thick with typical IQ bombastic riffing, lyrical insanity and hypnotic melody work. Think heavy... beyond heavy! Insiders have claimed the new album to be the missing link between 'The Comatose Quandaries' groove and 'Made Out of Negative Matter' compositional/technical prowess, all wrapped into one big insane ride."
The track listing is as follows:
01. Enter Eternity of Lethargy
02. Taedium Vitae
03. Elliptical Orbits in Disbelief
04. Reiterated Cycles of Celestial Spheres
05. Neo-Pseudo Existence
06. Infinite Sleep for the Hollow
07. The Algorhythmic Alignments
08. Yearn to Return [liquidation fails]

New Jersey metallers Dark Empire are happy to announce that Christian Colabelli has stepped in as their new permanent 2nd guitarist. Christian replaces Andrew Atwood, who split from the band just prior to the recording of last year's album, "From Refuge to Ruin."
Video can be viewed below of Christian and co-guitarist Matt Moliti running through some new riffs the band is preparing for a 5-track free download EP for later this year. Christian had this to say about joining Dark Empire:
"It's an honor to be an official member of Dark Empire. Since I've known Matt, we've had a mutual respect and admiration for each other's playing. When he initially asked me to fill in on guitar for live performances, I quickly recognized the chemistry, power, and potential of the lineup and was amazed at how natural it felt. I know Matt and I will challenge each other as guitarists and I expect huge accomplishments for Dark Empire in 2013."
Guitarist/death vocalist Matt Moliti also had this to say: "I'm really excited to have Christian a part of Dark Empire. His technical ability and songwriting skills are definitely going to take things to the next level, and fans can now expect a dual lead guitar attack reminiscent of bands like Racer X and Cacophony on the new material. Yes, we have already started writing some new riffs with the intention of releasing a free 5-track EP by the end of 2013. Stay tuned to the Dark Empire Facebook Page as we will be periodically updating with videos of the writing, rehearsal and recording process!" More...

“Deftones have been one of my favorite bands of all time since I discovered them when I was about 14 or so. That was around when I first started playing drums and guitar, and they were such a huge influence on my approach to music, writing and even the kinds of tones and sounds I was after. What is even more amazing is that in the 14 years since, they have consistently put out some of my favorite albums of all time, with Koi No Yokan being no exception to that. I can't even put into words how excited I am that Periphery is going to be touring with them in March. This is a bucket list tour for me.”
Matt Halpern (drums) further comments: “We couldn't be more excited to be direct support for the Deftones. As a band, they have inspired each one of us and it's truly an honor to be able to share the stage with them. We can't wait to get back out and see our current fans and hopefully make some new ones with on of our absolute favorite bands!" More...

Firewind has announced that vocalist Apollo Papathanasio has quit the band and Adagio vocalist Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Beyond Twilight) has been named his replacement for the upcoming tour in North America with Turisas whcih starts in Jacksonville this February.
The announcement reads as follows:
"FIREWIND have announced Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Adagio, Beyond Twilight, etc.) as new vocalist for their upcoming North American touring activities, after longterm vocalist Apollo Papathanasio parted ways with the band."
"FIREWIND commented: 'Today we are in the unfortunate position to announce that Apollo has decided to step down permanently from the vocal duties in FIREWIND. For the past few years it was evident that Apollo could not keep up with FIREWIND’s ever growing and demanding touring & promotional schedule. Several times we've had to recruit replacements in order to continue touring the world and keep playing for our fans. We're lucky enough to have worked with some of the best Metal singers out there!'
"Although we're sad to announce Apollo's departure and we sure will miss him, at the same time we feel that the show must go on! FIREWIND is a band that has gone thru lots of ups and downs the past 10 years, but is still going strong!
"With that said, we're happy to announce that Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Adagio, Beyond Twilight, Darkology) will be singing for us on the upcoming N. American tour with Turisas! This guy's a phenomenal singer and we can't wait to get out there and Rock! We're looking forward to our return in America. See you all soon!" More...

Ottawa act Deformatory has checked in with the following update about working on a new album:
"We've been writing tons of new music for the upcoming full-length album that we're positive you're going to dig. Lots of chaotic, technical bro0otality with a hefty dose of old-school riffs to bring it back; these new tracks are wicked.
"We have chosen an album title (which we'll release soon enough), and are working towards getting some killer artwork drawn up.
"Pre-production recordings are going well, and we're tightening up these technical beasts and who knows, maybe we'll launch a track or two for ya'll to hear and comment on.
"We'll be posting some videos in the upcoming weeks and will be looking for YOUR feedback.
"Until then, Stay Deformed."
Danish hard rock/traditional metal act Pretty Maids posted a preview clip for the new track "Mother of All Lies." The song, which will be released as a single and video on January 22, 2013, appears on the band's forthcoming new LP "Motherland," due out on Frontiers Records on March 22, 2013 (EU) and March 26, 2012 in North America.
After their successful and highly acclaimed 2010 album “Pandemonium”, Danish melodic Hard Rockers, Pretty Maids celebrated their 30th anniversary with their debut visual release “It Comes Alive (Maid in Switzerland)” in 2012. “Pandemonium” showed the world that Pretty Maids were in a creative spring again, with the band in their finest moment. The melodic approach brought a return to the “Future World / Red Hot and Heavy” era of the eighties, but with an updated sound and freshness that consolidated Pretty Maids as strong as ever.
In late spring 2012, the band gathered to finally write the follow up album. Singer Ronnie Atkins tells: “We knew it was going to be a tough one to follow ! I remember back in the day when we had to follow up albums like 'Future World,' we tried more or less to copy the songs from the previous album to keep the same kind of balance. But this time we just wrote what came natural to us and that’s what became 'Motherland'."
The band teamed up again with producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe) for the new album. Ronnie says: “Jacob was a natural choice since we had a great experience with him producing the “Pandemonium” album. The recordings went smooth to begin with, but then we had to start touring again during the weekends and this created some stress. Though I really feel strongly about “Motherland”. In my view it has all the ingredients of a good Pretty Maids album, maybe even more melodic than “Pandemonium” and absolutely, as far as I’m concerned a worthy follow up”. More...

We've hooked up with some great people - we've got new management, a great album, a great label. We just feel like everything is coming together, and hopefully some big things are to follow."
After a sabbatical for much of the 1990's, Stryper returned strong in the early 21st century. To date, the band has sold upwards of 8 million records worldwide and is a Dove Award-winner and Grammy nominee. More...
Metal Blade Records is pleased to announce the signing of Slough Feg, who's style is an eclectic mix of Celtic folk and traditional metal peppered with buckets of energy and lyrical depth.
On February 5th the label will be releasing three of the band's early releases that, until now, were only available as imports. "Twilight of the Idols" (1999), "Down Among the Deadmen" (2000), and "Traveller" (2003) will be packaged as a 3CD box set will also be made available on their own, digitally, via iTunes, Amazon, or your favorite digital retailer. Check out samples from these albums and preorder your copy right here.
Guitarist/vocalist Mike Scalzi comments: "We are very excited to announce that we have signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records for a new album, which we are beginning to record this month. The new material will be standard Feg-Fare--- that is, totally non-standard!! Of course there will be some galloping, rollicking, bouncing buccaneer riffs unearthed from the Voi-Vaudevillian vaults, and a touch of good-'ol misery and madness (not to mention more peevishly punctuated puns) in the lyrics. But this time there will also be a cavalcade of cacophonous crooning to add to the caterwaul, as well as the lavishly-landscaped luster of some majestic Morricone-esque riffs at which to marvel---perhaps a slight proto-American-West feel. So as usual, you'll just have to wait to hear it yourself!!!
"We are also equally excited (if not more excited!!) to announce that Metal Blade is re-releasing our second, third and fourth albums in the form of a bad-ass box set!! It's about time these albums were made available in the USA!!! They've always been imports in the past, but now you can get them all at once!!" More...
