On Saturday night, January 7th, 2012, the metal community took another step in dealing with the tragic death of long-time GWAR guitarist Cory Smoot by holding the first of two events in a three-show schedule of shows designed to support the Smoot Family Foundation and honor the life of this prolific artist, who died of a heart attack this past November at the age of only 34.
Cory had played the role of Flattus Maximus in the world's most infamous band for eleven years, as well as participated in many side projects, while at the same time producing and engineering tons of records at his always busy Karma Studios. In doing so he had become a treasured part of the local and national metal scene, and they turned out in force to both events, opening their hearts to Cory's family in a completely selfless display of solidarity, respect, and generosity.
Cory's widow, Jaime, who is pregnant with Cory's child, had this message for the fans: "I want to sincerely thank ALL the friends and fans for their amazing donations and support!! Thanks to Eve and Brent for organizing the events, to the businesses that contributed raffle prizes, and to the venues and bands for making the shows awesome!! You guys made Cory, the baby and me very proud!" More...

Society 1 vocalist Lord Zane has checked in with the following announcement about the band's upcoming activity:
"Lord Zane here. For the twelve people who were wondering what I was going to do regarding music and performing I can say after four months of reflection and rehabilitation that I am not prepared at this time to sit on the couch and watch television for the rest of my life. I’ve missed being involved with creating and performing music and while I truly enjoy directing and will continue to do so I feel it’s time to begin getting back out there with my own material…slowly.
"Is my neck healed? A simple answer is no but I’ve learned and implemented a plethora of new practices which are yielding amazing results thus far. Perhaps the key to performing and creating once again is a modified outlook that doesn’t require or expect me to immediately excel to the level of previous accomplishments.
"Here is the plan. One song, one video and one show at a time. No major tours. No big press releases. No interviews. No lofty claims of taking over the world. I’m not committing to anything except my desire to create and perform for myself at whatever pace I feel acceptable. I will have an attitude of whatever happens…happens. As long as I am being true to my sinister and controversial aspects of creation then I am fulfilling what my soul requires to thrive.
"I’m returning to my industrial metal roots. I know that last album made more than a few people scratch their heads with confusion but I can tell you this new material will be reminiscent of what most associate with my sound.
"So any bass players and drummers out there who live in Los Angeles that want to get involved in this next portion of the never ending saga of Society 1 let me know. Creative times ahead."

Opera Diabolicus will be releasing "+ 1614" on February 28th via Metalville Records. The band commented on its history and sound:
"Opera Diabolicus is the brainchild of composer/musician David Grimoire and lyricist Adrian de Crow. The idea sprung to life when the two of them met randomly at a stage play of Umberto Eco's book The Name of the Rose at a theatre in Gothenburg in 2006. Both of them were very intrigued by the story and they ended up talking about how interesting it would be to make a theatrical and dark metal musical based on that kind of a story. The conversation between them that took place in Gothenburg that bleak December night planted the seed that soon should grow to be the concept of Opera Diabolicus - The concept of combining the dark elements of music and theatre in alliance with musical excellency.
"The music could be described as dramatic and dark doom metal with atmospheric, epic and progressive elements. If you're into bands like Candlemass, King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Memento Mori, Therion, Notre Dame, Dimmu Borgir and Kamelot this is definitely the band for you to keep your eye on.
"The upcoming album features among others; Snowy Shaw, Mats Levén, and Niklas Isfeldt on vocals, daemonic voices and ghoulish sounds. Snowy Shaw has also contributed with his well known drums of doom which gives yet another warranty of quality to the music. The album is produced and mixed by none other than Andy LaRocque at his Sonic Train Studio." More...
I The Breather kicks off a massive North American tour alongside August Burns Red, Silverstein, Texas In July and letlive! on January 13th in support of the new album, "Truth and Purpose," which is set for a February 28th release. The group just posted a new track titled "Bruised and Broken," which can be heard via the player below.
Morgan (drums) states: "We recorded the new album with producers Paul Leavitt and Taylor Larson. We are beyond happy with the direction of the new material as it features a lot of technical drumming and dual guitar work, but it's very listenable at the same time. This disc offers a lot to the listener musically and vocally. On the last album we stuck to using one tempo and it was very one-dimensional. This new one features a ton more and I'm proud of that. It captures our choppy chugs in parts, our melodic choruses and our off-time breakdowns. I feel as though it's a huge progression." More...

Legion of the Damned is going to re-release the band's debut album "Malevolent Rapture" in memory of former bassist and friend Twan Fleuren, who unfortunately decided to take his own life last year. Legion of the Damned commented:
"May 20th, 2011 was a very sad day for us. Ex bass player and friend Twan Fleuren committed suicide. Twan was recruited by at that time second guitar player Leon Pennings, who served in the band Occult from 1992 until 1999. Twan Fleuren took place in the band Occult in late 1998. When Leon was thrown out of the band in 1999 right before we would leave for the Morbid Angel tour, Twan stayed in the band!
"A lot of struggle in the last Occult years we finally decided to take action: we changed the name Occult into Legion of the Damned, changed from record label Hammerheart to Boomer Entertainment & Massacre Records, and from then on, the band's career took a rocket flight.
"Twan Fleuren contributed on the most popular Legion of the Damned songs such as 'Werewolf Corpse,' 'Death's Head March,' 'Bleed For Me,' 'Malevolent Rapture' and of course our own hymn 'Legion Of The Damned.' More...

Thunderous post-instrumental outfit Pelican has announced the follow-up to the sprawling 2009 full length "What We All Come To Need," a new four song EP "Ataraxia/Taraxis" to be released via Southern Lord on April 10th.
With members now residing in separate cities, the EP represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution with a reenergized focus on composition and the utilization of the recording studio as a creative tool in the songwriting process, yielding one of the most diverse efforts in the band’s prolific discography. The band issued the following press release:
"The four new songs highlight the manifold sonic strengths of the band by delving into moments of triumphant melodic rock, smokey doom, ambient soundscape, acoustic desert-folk, and minimalist electronics. In contrast to the EP’s origin as the product of four different recording studios, including stints with engineers Sanford Parker (Twilight, Circle of Animals, Nachtmystium) and Aaron Harris (ISIS), the carefully crafted track listing boasts a cohesive narrative flow, lending the release an epic feel worthy of a full album."

The track, titled “Suffer in Silence,” sees several guest artists joining the band’s two-man line up, with Shining’s Niklas Kvarforth providing additional lyrics and vocals, Pantheon I’s Live Julianne Kostøl on the cello, Trollfest’s Martin Storm-Olsen on acoustic guitar, and Ingvild Sareeta Kaare, formerly of Ram-Zet on violin. “Suffer in Silence” can be heard on the band’s MySpace page or Facebook profile.
Aside from Unsgaard himself on guitars and vocals, the nucleus of the band includes Urgehal drummer Uruz who joined the band in 2009 when, having written eight songs, Unsgaard realised that he was ready to take the first steps to expand the band from what was initially a solo project. Drawing inspiration from the general decadence that has seeped into society over the years, So Much For Nothing's sound is a mix of brooding black metal and dark melodies, which together perfectly creates the decadent atmosphere that Unsgaard seeks to express through his music. Says mainman/founder Steve Gaines: "Hank! That's about all you need to know. Henry was at the top of all of our lists of guys we wanted to talk to. He has been in bands with both Dan and Rob - and I have been onstage and jammed with him many times over the years. Musically, he's a monster. Influences? The same. He knows the history of AAA. But most important was 'the hang'. The chemistry. We were facing a big unknown going forward without Angelo – and needed to know that the new person would not just fill the space, but make it his own. Intangibles. Henry is that guy."

Swedish black metal band Shining has updated its studio blog (which can be followed by heading over to this location), including video studio updates. The band are currently recording an eighth studio effort and the follow up to the 2011 release "VII: Född Förlorare."
The band's latest diary entry reads:
"Yup, we have reached our first milestone - all album track drums have now been recorded!
"Yesterday was a cheerful day compared to the somewhat gloomy Tuesday. The final drum recordings went extremely well (which was of course to be expected from a real pro such as Ludwig!), and once everything was in the can Niklas took Witt out for a well deserved dinner to celebrate.
"It is not time for Ludwig to go home just yet though, Thursday will start the drum recordings for some extra tracks and surprises that Shining has in store for all...
"On a slightly sadder note it seems that Shining's not-so-new-anymore bassist Christian has fallen victim to a throat virus that has been circling around in Sweden, which forced him to stay in bed whilst all others went to town. By the powers invested us by paracetamol and vitamin supplements, we wish that he would become a healthy young man very soon again...
"Things were cheerful enough for all after the dinner though as the guys bought some new movies and all spent the evening watching such gloomy classics as 'Get Him to the Greek' and 'The Naked Gun'.
"I cannot emphasize enough how good "Get Him to the Greek" is - but you'll probably get the idea after I post up Wednesday's video blog today.
