It has been widely reported across the Internet that Lou Reed passed away yesterday at the age of 71.

Reed was a member of Velvet Underground and also collaborated with metal icons Metallica for the "Lulu" album.

In 1999, Reed snagged a Grammy win for the documentary "Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart."

The cause of death was apparently due to problems with his liver transplant earlier this year. CNN.com reports:

Lou Reed, who took rock 'n' roll into dark corners as a songwriter, vocalist and guitarist for the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist, died Sunday, his publicist said.

The publicist, Peter Noble, confirmed Reed's death but released no details. Reed had undergone a liver transplant in May, his wife, the musician/performance artist Laurie Anderson, disclosed over the summer.

Reed's physician, Charles Miller of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, has confirmed now that the cause of death was liver disease.

He wasn't for everyone, but some of his stuff was outstanding. "Berlin" and "Blue Mask" are fantastic songs.

Tonight at 9, Lars Ulrich arrested for the murder of Lou Reed. Apparently, his weapon of choice was the sound of his snare drum.

lulu was not great but was not awful
it was challenging and difficult

or working out
coney island baby is my fav album from Reed
metallica deserves credit for the collaboration
