Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Passes Away

Photo of Slayer

Band Photo: Slayer (?)

Slayer has posted the following message online via Facebook about guitarist Jeff Hanneman dying earlier today:

"Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home.

"Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

"Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)."

Hanneman had also been hospitalized back in 2011 when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, and underwent surgeries, skin grafts, and intense rehab.

Hanneman was replaced on Slayer's subsequent live shows by Gary Holt of Exodus and Pat O'Brien from Cannibal Corpse.

Heart broken....but not surprised given the bands lack of communication about Jeff.
Got into Slayer in 86 with Reign....I was 12.
This band was the soundtrack to my youth and sadly the soundtrack to 9/11 with GHUA.
I don't even know what to say......thank you.
Thank you for everything you've given us.
Thank you for the Season's tour with Testament.
Thank you for Clash of the Titans 91.
Thank you for giving me the inspiration to pick up a guitar.

Ironically, I've had one of my Slayer shirts on all day, even before I heard this news.

Slayer was one of the pivotal bands in my evolution as a metalhead. They were one of my firsts, and they are, to this day, one of my favorites. I would not be the banger I am today if not for this band. That being said, Jeff's passing is devastating to me. I can only imagine what his family and friends, including Slayer themselves, are going through.

RIP Brother Hanneman. Thank you for everything. You will never be forgotten. May your music echo throughout eternity.

I just saw an abbreviated headline that "Slayer guitarist dies" and just knew it was Hanneman after his recovery issues. I've never read a report that he was an alcoholic (he would have emploded long ago, never being able to play as many shows as he did) but believe it's due to all the meds he had to take, they are hard on the liver. I just hope that Kerry let's the band Slayer rest in peace along with Jeff.
