Doro Talks New Album "Raise Your Fist" And Upcoming Tour
The metal queen Doro Pesch has kept busy this year, releasing an EP, a compilation, and the new full-length album "Raise Your Fist," which is an old school look at anthemic, fist-pumping metal meant to keep the energy running high.
Doro is gearing up to rock the sea-bound metal legions on the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise, which will then be followed by a U.S. tour in February with Sister Sin. As the year is ending and the festivities are just about to kick off, Doro got in touch with us to chat about the new album and upcoming live activity.
Check out a transcript of our talk below, in which she shares her excitement for new live shows, discusses a track dedicated to the late Ronnie James Dio, and gushes with love for all things '80s metal.
xFiruath: Thanks for the interview, how’s it going for you right now?
Doro: I just came back from the European tour and we finished in Paris, which went great and now I’m all excited for the American tour. There’s the holidays and then we’re headed back to America and doing the 70,000 Tons of Metal.
xFiruath: This is your first time on the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, right?
Doro: It’s my first time on that yeah, and I’m so excited. I’ve heard so much from other bands that it’s awesome. I did the Sweden Rock cruise, but I can’t wait for this one.
xFiruath: Coming up in February you’ve also got new tour dates with Sister Sin.
Doro: Yes, that’s right. We’ve toured together before and we know each other really well so I think it’s a great package. Liv is a great singer and on that last album we did a duet for the song “Rock ‘N’ Roll” the Motorhead classic and there’s a video that’s pretty cool, you can check it out on YouTube. I think that’s 21 dates and now I know what songs we’re doing. On this European tour we tried out some of the songs from “Raise Your Fist” and it’s going great. And of course we’ll play old classics, but it will be new and exciting and surprising.
xFiruath: Awhile back I had the opportunity to interview Lita Ford about her new album. Have you considered touring with her or doing something like that with an all female-fronted lineup?
Doro: That would have been great. My guys in the band went to Lita awhile ago and said we needed somebody to play with, but in October we already had all the dates booked in Europe so we couldn’t do it. But yeah we thought about it and I’m sure one of these days something will happen. That would be great. It’s about time.
xFiruath: Tell me about what went into writing and recording this new album “Raise Your Fist.”
Doro: Yeah I’d love to. It has 15 songs on it and lots of anthems. I love “Raise Your Fist in the Air” and “Revenge” and head banging songs like “Little Headbanger” and “Take No Prisoners.” Its pretty old school metal and I think it was great balance. One has a duet with Lemmy from Motorhead. It’s so full, I love it. There’s another special guest, Gus G. from Firewind. It sounds like a good old ‘80s record in 2012. One of my favorite songs, actually one of the first I wrote for this album, is called “Hero” and it’s gives thanks and honor to Ronnie James Dio. It’s an emotional song, on the one hand sad but on the other uplifting.
xFiruath: You put out a music video for the track “Raise Your Fist.” Where did you shoot that and how did that go?
Doro: It was shot in New York and we went to this neighborhood that was really dirty and dark and we rented out a truck to check out places that looked good. Then we jumped out, because it’s hard to get permission for this in New York city, and these gang members or something came out and said “What are you guys doing?” We though oh gosh, hopefully we don’t get shot. So we said we were sorry to invade their territory but it looked great for our video shoot. So they wanted to hear the track, and we played the song and they wanted to do it all together. All these people walked up, all these people who probably aren’t really metal heads. One guy was a homeless guy who was like 78, but he was super cool because he loved jazz but he liked our song too. From all over they joined the video so that was cool. We had a lot of fun. It’s a song about the injustice and raising your fist to fight, and that’s actually the message of the whole album, but its fun too and I think it’s uplifting and has positive energy. That’s what I want to accomplish, I want people to listen to it and feel really good and get energy and power.
xFiruath: You’ve actually got several releases out this year. There’s the album, the EP, and then the retrospective “Under My Skin.” What led to that coming around and did you choose the songs or is that something the label did?
Doro: It was my old label AFM, and they were really good to me. They wanted to do a best of, and I said that’s great but can I get in on it? So I wrote all the liner notes and I think it came out really nice. Now we’ve changed to Nuclear Blast. So the compilation is a best-of from the last several years and there all songs I still love.
xFiruath: What are you listening to lately and what bands do you like to hear while on the road?
Doro: I must say I still love all the stuff I used to love in the ‘80s. I love WASP and Megadeth and KISS and Motorhead and Saxon. I love so much stuff. I love Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Rammstein. They have great stage performances that are unbelievable live. Sometimes when I’m not in a metal mood I love Pink Floyd. Anything that makes me feel good, as long as it’s not like commercial pop music, I’m not so into that, but anything’s that real and makes you feel good.
xFiruath: Anything else you’d like to say?
Doro: Thanks to everyone for the great support. Next year we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary and I owe it all to the fans. I love them more than anything else and it will always stay that way. Happy holidays to everyone and have a great new year.
