Rockstar Ramblings: Gas Mask Gary

Canadian hard rockers Diemonds have released a new music video for the single "Get The Fuck Outta Here" from the album 'The Bad Pack', released on October 2nd through Underground Operations. Fans of horror movies and hard rock will enjoy this mini production.

We begin with a newspaper clipping that reads: MOVIE THEATER PRANK GOES HORRIBLY WRONG: JANITOR LOSES FACE IN GAS LEAK, VOWS REVENGE ON TEENAGERS. This is followed by THEATER JANITOR TOSSED INTO INSANE ASYLUM, and then finally, the payoff: GAS MASK GARY ON THE LOOSE! In case you haven’t figured it out I love the name. I’ve already written two chapters for my “Gas Mask Gary” fan fiction novel.

It’s a tall task to combine a music video with a horror film type story. To do so successfully you will need to have a recognizable slasher character (SEE: Gas Mask Gary), nudity, lots of blood, and a setup for a potential sequel. Let’s see how Diemonds do…

You can check off “recognizable slasher character”, I mean, Gas Mask Gary comes with a full back story (janitor with burned face comes back to haunt teens) and a great prop in a gas mask.

The band pulls up in a car and we know it’s the band because the license plate reads DIEMONDS. The rockers are dressed up as a bizarre breakfast club or it’s Halloween. There’s a “greaser”, nerd, and a couple of stoners. One of the stoners is wearing a knit hat with a marijuana leaf on it; you know the one because we all have had “that friend” one time or another in our life. The band is outside a movie theater, but they are locked out. The group does the first (and required) ‘No-No’ and splits up, trying to find a way inside.

Did I mention the “greaser” comes complete with a switchblade comb accessory? It’s the same one sold at “Crazy Ralph” stores nationwide and stupid.com. How surprised when he realizes his comb has been swapped for a knife and scalps off the top of his head? VERY, to say the least…and here we have our first kill. Now, let’s see who do you think is behind this? GAS MASK GARY! GAS MASK GARY! Bonus: The blood and nudity in this scene. Check and Check.

The bodies begin piling up quickly. A shocker for me was that the stoners didn’t “get it” until 4:45 in the video (just assumed they would be first). Finally, Gas Mask Gary is after the final band member, lead singer, Priya Panda. They have a Benny Hill type chase in a hallway and then at five minutes we get a “best of” Gas Mask Gary murder recap. The final scene shows Gas Mask Gary moving in for the kill, but then it appears Panda has taken him out and the gas mask drops to the floor. Stunning upset ending!

My idea for the sequel revolves around Priya trying on the mask only to turn into GAS MASK PRIYA! GAS MASK PRIYA! Stay tuned…
