Black Sabbath Recording New Album

Band Photo: Black Sabbath (?)

Metal Injection is reporting that Black Sabbath is currently in the studio recording vocals with Rick Rubin.

According to the news story, the band has 15 songs written and 12 are projected to be included on the new album. Further details on the upcoming songs will be announced as they are made available.

The album will presumably not feature Bill Ward, who has publically been in dispute with Black Sabbath (including having his photos removed from the band's website) as the will they/won't they of the band's reunion unfolded earlier this year, even prompting Geezer Butler to issue a statement on the inter-band drama.

Interested, for sure. Just no sure how well this is going to turn out. ACDC, KISS and Guns 'N Roses all attempted to recreacte their glory days in the modern scene and failed quite miserably. Still...Sabbath could not do any worse, could they?

Ozzy is a question mark, but Iommi is an invincible riff master. Heaven and Hell proved he's pretty much never gonna lose it, and I bet he's pulling out all the stops if it has the name Sabbath on it.

@ Cynic: No doubt about it. Furthermore, if the songs are already written it's more than what they had going for them on their first albums. Lol. It's a cakewalk from here.

@ Spiral: It's my guess that since they're doing vocal tracks now, that the drum tracks are already laid down. Vocals are usually the last tracks recorded barring a few lead fills and do-overs.

@ BLINDGREED: YEAH, I'LL AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT. IT'S JUST A SHAME THAT SHARON OSBOURNE AND CO. FELT THE NEED TO SCREW BILL WARD OVER. AM I STILL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE ALBUM? YES, BUT NOT AS MUCH AS IF IT WAS A FULL-FLEDGED REUNION.

IT COULD STILL BE THAT BILL WARD COULD COME IN AT THE LAST MINUTE AND RECORD OVER THE BASIC DRUMMING TEMPLATE THAT WAS LAID DOWN.

Actually, as I remember it, Bill kinda screwed himself on the first contract. That's why he's vying for a new one. Yeah, he could, but I don't know... Seems like they would have reached an agreement by now if it was going to happen.

I don't have my hopes up for this anymore. It's been nearly a year after their 11.11.11 announcement. Yet, the drama and inability for these once mighty iron men to tell their lawyers to fvck off, smooth out their differences and make some classic metal together has spoiled it for me. It's not the classic line-up. That was the 'sales pitch'.

FYI, Rubin reportedly owns Shangri-La studios in Malibu, CA, where 3/4 of the SAB are at.

I just can't expect any greatness to come from this. There is no challenge for them anymore. They're too comfortable to be convincing.
They should have rented a castle like they did for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, cut ties for a few months and recorded there. The adversity and oppression is a key ingredient in channeling an angst ridden tone. Based on the circumstances of this recording, I'm expecting Technical Exstacy II or Born Again (again).

I'm sure it will slay. Iommi is a riff BEAST and as long as Geezer's in the fold it will be heavy and tasty. Book it.

Iommi is the one of few that have never lost it. He won't let any Bullsh** slide. I hope he's their with Oz making sure he sings the best he can. Unlike the past few albums Oz has put out. The riffs will def not be a let down i can gaurentee that.

I have no doubt that Iommi is the Riff Master. His solo self titled album is awesome! However on that same album, one of the weaker songs was Who's Fooling Who. Not sure you could blame Bob Marlette (Producer & Bass player) for that one. I'm also a fan of Geezer's solo stuff, too.
What their solo albums prove to me is that they don't need Ozzy (or even Ward) to put out good music. BUT, Black Sabbath is more than Iommi and Geezer. Ozzy just doesn't have the fire in his gut like he used to, and without Ward, it's just not classic Black Sabbath.
That's what they hyped. The original line-up. I just don't have a good feeling for the package as a whole. Iommi and Geezer can't make up for a phoned in drum performance, over-processed vocals, and/or if Rubin screws up the production.
