Chosen Completes Debut Album, Video Footage Available
Ireland’s Chosen has checked in with an update on the completion of its debut album:
“In psychology, there is a phenomenon known as the planning fallacy, whereby people tend to underestimate how long they will need to complete a task, even when they have experience of similar tasks over-running. Of course, the entire writing and recording process of any given album is not always a rigidly structured affair but, rather, is often subject to the whims of key individuals and the capricious vicissitudes of modern day human life.
“As realistic and level-headed as we considered ourselves to be, in forecasting how long it would take to get our debut album completed, we could never have foreseen the strange sequence of events that would befall us and cause the project to drag out for as long as it has. Such unlikely circumstances not only have the tendency to slow down the writing process, they have the habit of producing significantly long periods of time where little or no progress is made whatsoever.
“Since our previous update, over a year ago, an awful lot has happened within the CHOSEN camp. First off, we lost our rehearsal space which was located in the business suite of a seasonal hotel that got repossessed by NAMA at the end of last summer. Finding a new room took considerable time but we eventually settled on a suitable lock-up space in Dublin. We also parted ways with bassist Richie Brennan and vocalist Ray Scully at the beginning of 2012. In this particular instance, it was outside commitments that were the catalysts in both cases but we are extremely grateful for the time they put in and we wish them the very best of success in their future careers.
“Being slimmed down to a two-piece for a second time, we simply ignored any fatalistic conclusions and endeavoured to complete the album ourselves in some way, shape or form. With bass and vocals being needed to finish the album, we decided to fulfil these roles ourselves. Not everyone knows this, but prior to the formation of CHOSEN, Paul [Shields] was an active vocalist/guitarist. However, at that particular time, he wanted to focus more on guitar playing and opted to let someone else take on the vocal duties.
In hindsight, having him take up the microphone is, perhaps, something we probably should have done a long time ago, given our long history of being unable to find the right combination of members. In a way, it was inevitable. Then again, we’ve certainly no major regrets over having worked with various musicians in the past, as without their efforts we probably would have never gotten to where we are today. While completing the album in this particular way is not something we could have ever predicted, it has certainly been one of the best decisions we’ve made in the history of the band.
“As of this moment, we have just recently captured the bass and vocal tracks at Westland Studios and will be embarking upon the tumultuous mixing and mastering stage in the coming weeks. This is where everyone in the studio control room gets really particular and neurotic about how the final product ought to sound but we are confident that there will be no toys thrown out of the pram, no tantrums, nor any slammed doors, and if all goes according to plan, our debut album, entitled 'Resolution,' will be released in early 2013 (exact release date to be announced in our next newsletter).
“We would like to thank all of you for your utmost patience and for not giving up on us. Thank you for the positive emails, the enthusiastic enquiries and heartfelt words of encouragement, which helped us to keep going when, during times of uncertainty, it looked like the writing was on the wall. We hope that everything which was bound to go wrong with our project has, at this stage, gone wrong and so, going forward, we can get back to releasing music on a regular basis once again.
“For now, we will leave you with a short video documenting the various stages of the album recording process. The footage is taken from our initial sessions at Komodo Studios and, more recently, at Westland Studios with producer Alwyn Walker who really has gone above and beyond the call of duty for this album.”
The track listing for "Resolution" is as follows:
1. Engines of Belief
2. Defective Prospection
3. The Narcissism Epidemic
4. Mental Clarity
7. Asch’s Paradigm
8. Metaphysical Contradiction
9. The Departure Lounge
"Resolution" is slated to be released in February 2013 and will be available for free download from chosen.ie. In addition to MP3s, the album will also be available in two exclusive limited edition hardcopy formats.
The two-disc, deluxe special edition will feature a bonus disc of unreleased songs taken from the album sessions, alternative mixes, as well as some drum and bass tracks. This set will come packaged in a double-disc jewel case and accompanied by a 12-page booklet.
The collector’s art-book edition will be a 50-page, full-colour hardcover book, bundled with extensive liner notes, lyrical themes for each song, rare photos, studio diaries and much more, all exhibited within the exquisite tapestry of artwork courtesy of Fiaz Farrelly.
