This is a pretty solid Bathory tribute. From many fairly straight forward interpretations to the bizarre Sigh cover, the two sides of the band are covered with varied and well crafted results.

Your grave-dwelling ghoul will find much to love (if that's in his system) on disc 1, while the valhalla-bound set will brandish his sword to the tracks from Hammerheart, Twilight, Blood on Ice and the Nordlands.

Personally, enjoying most of Bathory's run, I like the whole thing. It is nicely sequenced in order of albums, so you get a bit of a historical tour of band's transition--even if not the pivotal epic tracks on BFD which signaled the change to come. It is housed in a handsome package, giving information on each band as well as some thoughts on the impact of Bathory from the tribute's organizer. This is a case where I am glad I went for the actual discs and not settled for purchasing a download.

As a fine bonus, included is a previously unheard half hour phone interview with Quorthon from 1996 upon the release of Blood on Ice.

Horns/mead raised to all involved in this fine tribute. Without a doubt worth getting if you're a Bathory fan. Especially so if you aren't too staunchly rooted in one phase of Quorthon's career to fully enjoy both sides.

last thought: if there is to be a volume 2, which I pray to both old splitfoot and odin both that there will be, I hope someone finally tackles Shores in Flames. Maybe it's time for the live tribute act Twilight of the Gods to put a track to disc? And another weird track by Sigh, please.
