The Rockstar Ramblings: Sister Act
This week a look at two new videos: A classic head to head video showdown between Sister and Electric Sister. As always the rules are made up as we go along, except of course dancers and pole usage: both matter and both score well!
First up is “Spit on Me”, the new single from Swedish rockers Sister. The song is from the album titled Hated. It doesn’t take long to see that this isn’t your typical “live video with backstage shots” because the band has added “scratched” captions to assist the viewer with the lyrics. MAYDAY is scrawled across the screen to start and words are displayed throughout. To break up the live performance footage we are granted brief backstage access. The standard, as with most shots of rock and roll bands backstage, there is a plethora of bottles, towels, women with large breasts, and cameras. The tipping point for me is the ending when the band incorporates “hawking a loogie” into the ending. FYI: This is also known as a “lung cookie”, it’s true. Go ahead, look it up at UrbanDictionary.com.
“I Want it All” is the latest video released from Oakland natives, Electric Sister. The song is from the album titled The Lost Art of Rock and Roll. The video begins with a car (a classic Impala) that apparently has a mind of its own. After a very poor attempt at breaking into the car, the vehicle begins moving on its own. A look at the band on stage and then things start getting a little weird. Cut back to the car and the driver is wearing a devil mask. Again, cut back to the car and the driver is wearing a devil mask! The masked man is following around the members of the band and picking them up. This reminds me of too many tequila-infused mornings, waking up and wondering, “Was he wearing a devil mask?” Not good then and not good now. Tonight I am definitely going to be firing up some alcoholic night terrors. The devil masked car continues to drive; dropping off its passenger at his gig, waiting, and then stopping off at a taco truck. The Impala, driven by a masked devil, eventually has all of the members in the band (who also then are wearing devil masks) and cruises slowly around Oakland until a cop pulls them over. (Is it just assumed that two hours later someone reports a dead cop on the side of the highway?) The video finishes with the Impala creeping along the street, without anyone behind the wheel…
As much as I enjoyed the loogie enhanced “Spit on Me” by Sister I have to go with Electric Sister’s “I Want it All.” Impalas combined with devil masks and tacos really are a terrifying combination. Should I ever decide to stop at a taco truck (unlikely) I will now be looking over my shoulder for the Impala. I will probably also be very drunk on tequila…
