Deftones Bassist Chi Cheng Emerging From Coma And Now Partially Conscious

Band Photo: Deftones (?)
After over three years in a coma, Chi Cheng is now beginning to emerge from an unconscious to partially conscious state. Cheng is now able to move his leg when commanded but is still otherwise unable to move or speak aside from being able to make grunting noises since October. Those looking to see Cheng's Progress can check out the official website for his recovery fund.
Cheng was injured in a car accident in late 2008 which left him comatose and requiring surgery to remove part of his brain. Seven months after the accident, he was no longer on life support. Two years later, Cheng Began to briefly emerge from his coma in short intervals. More than a year later, Cheng is able to respond to commands more often and now has the use of his legs.
Even after a benefit concert and single, Cheng's family is running out of money. The family only has $17,495 our of the $250,000 that they need to hopefully give Chi Cheng a full recovery.
Cheng recently underwent surgery earlier this month, after which he showed signs of improvement. His recovery has been incredibly slow but he has shown steady improvement over the course of the past two years.

Wooow he'll pull through, my grandpa had open heart surgery after a terrible car accident and no one thought he would pull through, even after his 2 year coma... But he came back reaaal slowly then he was back entirely. A little more laid back and not so uppity, but he was still able to laugh and be himself for at least another 15 years before he passed away. I also live in canada where healthcare is FREE, so we didnt have to raise any money... It's a sad state of the world when an imaginary boundary dictates what you can go see a doctor for and what u have to prioritize and think "oh this broken arm isn't that bad, besides i can't afford the hospital bill anyhow..."
I couldn't agree more, btbamfav20.
As a Finn myself enjoying a 100% free healthcare over here, it's really, really hard for me to understand why any government would not want to provide free health care for it's citizens. To me, that's complitely disrespective and outrageous. That's a true slap in face of every US tax payer, imo.
It seems to me that whenever public healthcare comes up in the US, some lighthead pulls the socialism card.
"Socialism"?
Right. Well, shame on us Canadians, Finns and 100% of the western world minus USA, us dirty commies. How dare we have a public healthcare? We're looking after our own! That's terrible and so are we.
Btw, I wonder how all roads, gov buildings, public libraries etc in US got built?
Over here they were built on tax payers - our - money. Another proof we're all dirty commies.
I wonder how they do it in the US?
I'm watching a co-worker jump through hoops because her husband has cancer and their insurance has decided he is too costly to save. Our system is seriously flawed and many conservatives aggressively defend the party line on healthcare at the expense of the entire country. It's very bizarre. Fear is a an effective, stupefying bludgeon.
Glad to hear about Chi, I've been a fan since the mid-90's.
Hold up, while it is good news that Chi is doing better, this headline and similar headlines are misleading. I have been following Chi's progress closely since the accident so this and other headlines were shocking to say the least. Here is some text from the oneloveforchi.com website:
"For those of you who regularly follow the website.. you are well aware that on Feb 1st I posted a short video clip of some of Chi’s recent progress when he lifted his leg on request a couple times. I said “it’s little baby steps like this that bring chi closer to recovery.” I don’t understand how someone could take this so far out of context to make it into headlines reading “Chi Cheng is Awake After 4 Years in Coma”!? (example headline of what I have seen today)"
So while it is good news it is in no way "Chi "emerging" from his coma. He is still in a semi-conscious state.
to jkkij: Are you serious? "Wouldn't the band take care of it?" Do you have any idea what medical expenses cost in the US? And do you think that the members of the Deftones are billionaires?
to wilco: I have seen you on this site for a while and I know you are a good guy but your comment just kind of struck me strange. The Deftones shelved an entire album of material after Chi's accident. The "Eros sessions" were never released and when Sergio joined the band they returned to the studio to record an entire new album which became Diamond Eyes. So I mean, as far as a band "being only so loyal", that just doesn't apply here.
I don't want to start any sh** on this site because it's great for metal news but I think it's important to keep it all straight.
I think "emerging" is appropriate even if one jumps to conclusions. It's an ongoing process for sure. There's only so much room to explain in a short headline and our slightly longer headline above is more clear on the matter. But I agree I've seen some headlines that make it sound like he just woke up.
As for what Wilco said, it was in regards to the comment above his that read "How is the family still short on money? Wouldn't the bannd take care of it???" - as if the band can cover all the expenses of being in hospital care for so long. I don't think he was questioning the band's loyalty.
WOLF7 - im a Canadian and even i will admit I'm jealous of Finland not b/c of health care since its the same but just because everything i hear and see looks amazing..i wanna go there lol
but on serious note glad Chi is pushing through been a while since i read anything new on his progress.
Just let me know when you're coming, MuDvAyNefan ;)
To me the greatest thing about Finland is the nature and the weather. Snowy winters with around 4hours of daylight, perfect for blasting some extreme metal, and in the mid summer, the sun doesn't go down at all.
Not for everybody, of course, but I love it.
^LOL. Just tell them you love Finnish metal and your Finnish passport is in the mail! ;)
By the way, I also find it very odd that Deftones needs to have fund raisers to cover Chi's medical expenses. I remember reading that Chino Moreno's net worth alone was around 15million dollars. So...
Ok. Time for me to shut up.
Wolf - haha i'm thinking of going on up there this summer for a week:D friggin love everything about your country my favourite bands are all from there pretty well....poets of the fall, Apocalyptica (seen and met them cool guys),The Rasmus, and i still like some CoB,HIM,Amorphis, and Waltari
lol have to ask something thats way off topic but i always wanted too know...how big are the dudesons there? lol cause there are like my idols
Damn MuDvAyNefan, I ignored your question. Sorry.
Dudesons are still big here, as they had their show running here nationwide for some years before they got/went international.
They're Finnish national celebs, no question. Jarppi even participated on the local "Dancing with the stars".
As for something finnish that actually makes sense ;), I am really, really happy you know Poets of The Fall.
Truly a great band. One of those 'hidden gems' really.
My fav non-metal Finn band for sure. And you know Waltari as well.. wow...
haha jarppi is my favourite for sure...i saw he lost a bunch of weight from dancing with stars lol
That's awesome there national celebs...i think all canada/ontario has is kenny and spenny from their show..if you haven't seen it i recommend it for good laugh!
o man i only heard about poets back in 2010, i member i was playing an awesome xbox game called alan wake and was blown away by the music in it and i had to hear more so found out that poets did some songs in that game and ever since then special ordered all theirs cds from finland and without a doubt my favourite rock band
(lol already planning that when i go to finnalnd i will do it when Poets are playing shows :)
o ya if i stumble across a good song from a rock/metal band i will look into them and that's what i did with waltari..my ex played their song "one day" and i thought it was great!...truly think poets and waltari deserve national attention!
