Arkona has been one of the premier Pagan-influenced bands for years; a decade to be exact. The folk metallers have been touring heavily in support of their sixth full-length album "Slovo", and will soon to be tearing up festivals across Europe and America like Paganfest, Extremefest, and Brutal Assault. I talked to Arkona about "Slovo", touring, and their inspiration.

How was the tour with Korpiklaani?

Our tour with Korpiklaani was very good, at first, because all shows were successful for us. It was a first tour in US and Canada, so before it we worried a lot, because we didn’t knew what to expect from shows and from people. Fortunately, all were at the highest level and all worries disappeared after we saw such a great support! Now we are looking forward to return back to North America with Paganfest 2012! We want to see all, who was on our shows on tour with Korpiklaani and those, who wasn’t! See you soon!

You released your album "Slovo" this summer. How have your fans liked it?

Our old fans knows, that something always changing in our music and we love to do experiments, how it was with the last album “Slovo”. We got a lot of positive reviews on it. People, who are interested in pagan/folk metal also like this album, someone like more previous album, so, we are satisfied with reaction of our listeners.

I know that you use a lot of mythology in your music. What is "Slovo" about in particular?

There is not a lot of mythology in our music. Mostly, lyrics based not on mythology, but on my own worldview. Of course, I can’t tell that we are not using myths of our country, but we are singing not only about past and about something, that forever gone. We are also singing about modern world and society.

You've been so busy this year, and you've already been confirmed for Paganfest in America next year and other festivals in Europe like Extreme Fest and Brutal Assault. Is this band your full-time job?

Yes, now we are working only in a band, because it’s impossible to combine the band and job having so many shows per every year.

You've also made so many music videos throughout your career. Do you come up with the concept played in the videos?

Some of our videoclips made absolutely spontaneously, for example, videoclip on song "Slavsia, Rus’", where I’m walking at the field and glorify my lands. Director called us and told, that he can provide all for this video: good camera, good brigade of operators. So at the same day we went to Belorussia and shoot this video. Almost the same was with another video “Liki Bessmertnih Bogov”. Of course, for video, like “Stenka na Stenku”, we had a scenario, where fist fighters fighting on the field, according to Russian ancient tradition.

Are there any places you would like to tour that you haven't been to yet?

Sure, there are many places, where we want to play! For example, this summer we will play unique open-air show in Carpathian mountains, which will happened at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level and fans can go up only with special rope elevator. It must be very interesting! Our dream is to play on the cape Arkona.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

We want to wish a good health to you and your families, because having a good health you can make real all what you want! Respect and love your parents and nature!
