The Rockstar Ramblings: Jean Jackets and Fishnets
Happy New Year! Let’s kick it off with a couple of new bands paying homage to the glam metal of the eighties. First up is New York’s Nasty Habit. Their video “Saturday Night” is from their recently released EP.
The video opens with a scene of a man wearing high boots waiting for a ride. Cut to a pool table and then a naked girl grinding on top of a guy. This sequence could only happen on a Saturday night! The band shows up and they all head to the show where the song kicks off with in sync guitar playing. One of the guitarists is wearing a Ramones T-shirt which begs the question: How to achieve instant eighties style street cred on stage? The answer of course is by waving a bottle of Jack Daniels around (ala David Lee Roth), strippers, or wearing a Ramones T-shirt. The rest of the band is draped in jean jackets and leather.
A straight forward rocker with lyrics “Bottoms up going to feel tonight tomorrow”; again, it’s feeling like a Saturday night! On stage with the band aren’t strippers, not even models, but what appear to be actual groupies. After consulting with a group of video consultants we have come to the conclusion that this works very well. A crowd appears, a guitar solo is performed on a bar (later assisted with his tongue), and closes with a lot of neck thrust guitar playing. If you like jean jackets, Saturday nights, and groupies (and really, who doesn’t?) this video will grade well with you…

Next up is Chicago based Hessler who have released a music video for the song “Kamikaze”, from their debut EP titled BAD BLOOD. Hessler is fronted by fitness model Lariyah Daniels. Enough said, let’s roll the video.
Words of doom are spoken in cell 415. Why 415? Not sure, I would have preferred 420. Regardless, a guard with a guitar shows up and handcuffs the dude in the cell and then gives him a beat down. Luckily the dude has a red guitar pick hidden in his mouth that he uses to un-cuff himself and crawl out of his cell. Lots of questions already, but the MacGyver style guitar pick magic trick is most perplexing. Not to mention, somehow during his escape he loses his shirt. Cut to a guitar solo on a shark guitar and the classic “abandoned warehouse” video shoot setting which let’s face it, has become what Super 8 motel rooms are to porn.
Daniels makes her first appearance and she is wearing fishnets and leather. No, this is not the name of a New York Dolls song (that would be Cigarettes and Fishnets); this is what she is actually wearing. Back in the cell, more beat downs. Back in the warehouse: more fishnets. During a solo Daniels grabs the head of the guitarist and almost motorboats him. I have watched this a few times and each time I hope it will happen. Never lose faith! More guitars and more beating scenes occur. The song ends with a flash of a guitar that reads BITE ME, the drummer executing one of the greatest all time hair twirls, and dramatic stares by each member of the band. Back in the cell the dude is woken up by a guard. Was it all a dream? Lots of questions left unanswered. Was the guitar pick never magical? Did the guitar actually read BITE ME? Was there a motorboat scene? I guess I’ll need to watch one more time just to make sure…
