Saw them twice touring for Catch-33 and Obzen, and they are awe inspiring! I was side stage for their Catch-33 show and was able to watch Haake from his right side. Amazing technique and interdependence. The sound of the band as a whole was crushing. Was front row during their Obzen tour (They were support for... I forget) and again... crushingly heavy tone, tight playing and awesome stage presence.
Pummelled by the aural waves from their viking soundship.
Cannot wait to hear what this latest holds for us.
As for Meshuggah live, saw them last summer (during a very odd weekend, due to certain events in Norway).
They were amazing, considering they did only a handful of shows lasty summer (like 4-5 shows total). Their playing was just flawless and full on.
For those interested, the Fractial Audio Axe-FX units sound amazing! I couldn't believe they were getting a sound like that live by DI:ing Axe-Fx units straight to the desk.
The guitars sounded better than on Obzen, or their live pack Alive. And that's saying a lot.
Im pretty fortuanate that i saw Meshuggah twice on thier first US tour in late spring of '98. Played with PRO-PAIN and Pissing Razors. Saw them at Infinitys in Springfield MA,and the Elvis Room in Portsmouth,NH. Also saw them in 99 at Lupo's in Providence,RI with Slayer and Sick of it All. Seen 'em open for Tool also. So yea, looking forward to new Meshuggah stuff,no doubt! I wonder what they feel about the whole "djent" craze, they seem to be in thier own little musical universe,so im sure they're pretty aloof to it. I hate djent, but love Meshuggah.
Try 'Nothing' as well.
Can't wait for 'Koloss'. I have a feeling it will be ground breaking.
Last album was a culmination of their previous efforts and this will show the group raising the bar once again.
Which it's due to be honest, a lot of up and coming djentified/chuggy bands that need to be put in their place.
Irish and Hellrat, as a huge Meshuggah fan myself, for anyone new to them I'd recommend Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere for starters.
Catch 33 and Obzen are not the easiest albums to get into, even some diehard fans are not happy with those 2, especially Catch 33.
If someone asked me which album defines Meshuggah, it's Chaosphere.
My opinion.
Yeah, I agree Wolf. First album I purchased was Destroy. Erase. Improve. And ive been hooked ever since. Second was Obzen. Just recently got into Meshuggah and im liking every minute of it. :)
Anyone hear the track "I"? 21 minutes long and it doesnt let up AT ALL. Crazy man, Thomas Haake is just other wordly.
HR: I agree the Destroy Erase Improve is one to get. It's faster and thrashier than all but Chaosphere.
Highlights: Future Breed Machine, Soul Burn, Suffer in Truth.
Also, "Nothing" is a great album for their mid tempo groove.
Highlights: Stengah, Rational Gaze, Closed Eye Visuals
Agree with the guys going with Destroy Erase Improve. The opening track off that one,Future Breed Machine is probably thier best song. To this day,it sounds just as fresh to my ears as it did when released 15 years ago! Relentless and pummeling to the senses,it smacks you in the face with a barn shovel! Catch 33's always been my least favorite, but i should break it back out, give it another listen.
Oh damn, when I said Catch 33, I meant Nothing - I blame Drum Junkie for mentioning them both before I made my comment :P
As for obzen... its definitely my most played album by them, not sure why it isn't liked by others. Any reasons why?
I still love everything they did though, but for some reason Destroy Erase Improve isn't quite up there on my radar as Obzen and Nothing.
For me, The drum sound on Nothing was top notch. (Thanks, Drumkit from Hell!)
On Obzen, the drum sound was 'thinner' and lost some of the punch to my ears.
The faster playing with the 8-string guitars doesn't translate as well for me, either. I like Bleed (love it really), so I guess I need to relisten to Obzen to see if it grows on me more. Thanks Irish :)
NP: Track 1- Combustion
Catch-33 was the first album I heard by Meshuggah, and I instantly loved them for it. Having now heard the rest of their catalogue, though, there are albums that definitely do the band more justice - even if Catch-33 remains my favourite. I'm a bit sentimental like that haha
That's the thing about Meshuggah; you just never know what to expect, except that it'll be pretty damn heavy!
On Catch 33 they play non-stop through, what, the first 6 tracks, lots of the tracks clocking under 2mins while on Obzen, most of the tracks clock at around 5mins, one at 7mins and the endcore 9mins.
Psythe, to me Catch33 is this unique "trip" album: once I put it on, I know it stays on until the very end.
I always get the feeling I've landed on that planet from the movie "Aliens" when I listen to Catch33 :)
Ryanopuffs, yeah the "I" EP is amazing! Meshuggah blasting through a 21min track with hardly any pauses. I listen to it all the time.
Jesus, I don't know what my problem was with these dudes...ears musta been crammed up with wax or something
No chance to get to the record shop today, but have been checking sh!t out on youLube this evening...these guys are fvckin gnarly!!
Haven't come across anything I don't like yet...and a lot of it I know will only get better with more listens
Hey! This bumbling, wandering fool was just pointed to a rich gold mine that every savvy feller out there already done knowed about fer years! :)
NP---New Millenium Cyanide Christ...classic video as well
Demoncleaner23 from Post 16 - A tour that heavy!! Finally us aussie (who are normally missing bands touring here) have something to cheer about. We have both of those bands and many many more in Feb for soundwave festival. Check out the lineup here http://www.soundwavefestival.com/lineup
