Unearthing The Metal Underground: Heavy Metal In Cuba

While the Caribbean island of Cuba may be a source of mistrust for some owing to it's political history and it's former leader Fidel Castro being seen as both an enemy and an icon, the country boasts quite a healthy metal scene, one which certainly deserves to be brought to the attention of headbangers the world over. When scratching the surface, one can find a diverse range of metal bands in Cuba, from the epic to brutal. Here are just a few of the Cuban metal acts on offer.

Formed in La Habana in 2009, Sed mostly comprises of former members of The Flowers Of Evil and Radical OH. The band is perhaps best described as a combination of speed and power metal, featuring crystal clear and powerful vocals along with epic sounding riffs and stampeding drums. The band released their first demo CD, "Sed De Tantas Cosas" last year and has even been able to perform on Cuban television.

Sed aren’t the only band from this Caribbean island to fuse sub-genres. Santa Clara’s own, Blinder, who formed in 1998 from the ashes of death metal outfit, Medium, perform a high energy hybrid of death and thrash metal that is as catchy as it is heavy. Most recently, the band headlined the third day of the Ciudad Metal Festival, which took place at the end of October.

Also hailing from Havana, Hipnosis bring a much more operatic and grandiose tone to their brand of heavy metal. Like Blinder, Hipnosis are also veterans of the Cuban rock scene, having formed in 2001 and releasing one album, "The Chosen One," as well as three demo CDs, the most recent being, "Testimony."

Wow, excellent find! thank you so much! I'm from Colombia and have lived abroad for over 10 years, it is very interesting to see the differences in sounds and aesthetic within metal culture around the world. Its also cool to see the sounds coming from places not usually associated with Metal. Many thanks!

hola from Havana! It's great to see the word getting out about Cuban metal - it's a healthy scene down here (Ive lived here for 10 years) - now if only some good mainstream rock bands (no offense Tesis de Menta) could come to the fore.

Your readers might like to know that the place to catch these metal acts live is Maxim Rock - Cuba's best room, as far as Im concerned: great audio, excellent lights (and techs who actually know how to work them) and lots of mosh space.

I blog at Here is Havana and have lamented the lack of good ole rock n roll here: www.hereishavana.wordpress.com.

Rock on!
